Selfie near KRS crest gate lands 2 youths in police net
Mandya: After a two-minute selfie featuring three youths near the crest gate of the closely guarded Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) reservoir went viral, police detained two of them on Saturday and launched a search for the absconding person.
The video was shot three weeks earlier.
All three have been booked on charges of illegal and wrongful entry under BNS for unauthorised entry into the heavily secured KRS Dam premises. Jeevan, 20, and Gangadhar, 32, both residents of Chikkadi village in Pandavapura taluk, along with their friend, shot a video standing close to the crest gate. The video clearly captures the individuals stating that security personnel attempted to stop them, but they managed to sneak into the restricted zone nonetheless, where civil work is being carried out.
They could access entry because the security grills were opened to facilitate construction at the dam site. While the incident initially appears to be a security lapse, sources reveal that the underlying issue is a critical shortage of manpower. The shortage of security personnel against the sanctioned strength has posed tough challenges to safeguard the sprawling 300-acre area comprising KRS Dam and Brindavan Gardens.

On average, over a dozen security staff are on duty per shift, including office personnel, making comprehensive surveillance nearly impossible. Repeated requests for additional manpower and essential equipment — such as walkie-talkies and baggage scanners — have fallen on the deaf ears of the authorities concerned.

Speaking to TOI, superintendent of police Mallikarjun Baladandi said: "It is restricted area, the trio have trespassed and hence we have arrested two of them in this regard.
With regarding CCTV and various other security related aspects, I had written two letters to Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited but they have not taken any action. Again we will write a letter about various requirements".
With daily footfall ranging from 5,000 to 10,000—and reaching up to 50,000 during Dasara — the current security setup is grossly inadequate. CNNL should prioritise recruitment, provide necessary equipment, restore surveillance systems, and ensure basic amenities are in place. Sources claim that due to a lack of vehicles, night patrolling has become challenging for the security personnel guarding the reservoir.

Cash, jewellery worth over Rs9L stolen from 2 bungalows in Nashik
Nashik: Two bungalows on Mahalaxmi Temple Road were burgled in the early hours of Friday, with cash and jewellery amounting to over Rs9.3 lakh reported stolen. The Upnagar police station has registered a case under sections 331 (housebreaking) and 305 (theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanahita (BNS). According to the police, unidentified individuals broke into the two adjacent, unoccupied bungalows sometime between 12:01am and 6am on Friday. The thefts came to light when an acquaintance of one of the owners noticed the open main doors of the bungalows. He then informed one of the owners, leading to the registration of the police complaint. "We will check the CCTV footage in and around the area to determine if any movement of the burglars was spotted," a police officer said. House break-ins and thefts are a concern in Nashik city, considering that over 200 cases are registered every year, while the detection rate is less than 30 per cent. The police have been constantly appealing to the people to deploy security guards and install CCTV cameras in their respective areas. This can help in detecting the criminals, and the cameras also act as a deterrent for such offences.

Leopard kills woman grazing goats in Pauri Garhwal
Dehradun: A leopard mauled a 35-year-old woman to death while she was grazing goats in her fields near forests after the predator ambushed her from behind bushes at Halsi village in Pauri Garhwal's Lansdowne forest division, Dwarikhal block, on Sunday evening. This was the third fatal leopard attack in the region within a month despite intensified patrolling and other mitigation measures by forest officials. Former gram panchayat of Jawad, Rajesh Miya, said Lata Devi screamed for help when the leopard attacked her but villagers were unable to save her. Forest and district administration officials reached the location soon after the incident to assist the victim's family. Villagers from nearby areas such as Banali, Kandakhal, Bistana, Jawar, and Birmoli demanded that forest officials kill the leopard, fearing it could attack others in the vicinity. Divisional forest officer (DFO) of Lansdowne, Aakash Gangwar, who met the family along with frontline staff, said the ex-gratia compensation process for the victim's family had begun. Jewellery worth Rs7.5 lakh stolen from home in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A house in Bhagat Singh Nagar was broken into on Friday with thieves making off with gold jewelry valued at Rs7.5 lakh. The incident occurred while the family was away from their residence. According to the police, the theft took place sometime between 10am and 6.15pm. Unidentified suspects gained entry into the house and stole all the gold jewelry inside. The victim, a 35-year-old homemaker, filed a complaint stating that she was at her workplace and her son was at school when the housebreaking occurred. Her husband is currently residing in Pune. "The break-in took place in an apartment flat situated in a multi-storey apartment. The thieves must have conducted reconnaissance of the flat and knew that no family members remained present during the daytime," a police officer said. Upon forcing entry through the door, the suspects broke open the cupboard and decamped with the gold jewellery. The Pundalik Nagar police have registered an offence under section 331(3) (house break-in) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
