
GP says common vitamin deficiency could be making your hair go grey sooner
A leading doctor has shared some of the reasons why people may be going greyer sooner - and how you can change certain habits to prolong the ageing process of your hair
While no one likes to spot a grey hair it's is inevitably going to happen one day - however there are some simple lifestyle changes you could make to prolong the greys from coming. Some people will start to notice greys in their twenties, while some won't have any until their fifties and the greys tend to first appear at the temples and make their way around the back of the head.
Despite some people proudly embracing their greys, some people have a stigma around the silver strands and are doing all they can to cover them up.
GP and women's health specialist, Dr Deepali Misra-Sharp revealed what could be speeding up the greying process and advised that if greying happens suddenly or very early, it's worth a quick check-in with your doctor, but for most people it's just a part of the "natural rhythm of ageing".
She told the Daily Mail that smoking, certain nutrient deficiencies such as low vitamin B12 or iron, as well as thyroid issues or autoimmune conditions could affect the hair strands earlier than usual.
The expert urged people to avoid using heat or dyeing your hair as there is "no proven way to bring colour back once a hair has gone grey". However she has said there are things to do to keep your hair strong, healthy, and maybe slow down the overall process such as vitamins, iron, zinc and protein as a varied diet really does help your hair.

Quitting smoking will help reduce oxidative stress and help your overall hair and skin health, and also keeping your stress levels down is also beneficial. Dr Misra-Sharp also suggested opting for gentle hair care - avoiding dyes and heat - and certain supplements (only after speaking to a doctor) can also help to slow down the greying process.
She further detailed: "When it starts really depends on your background and your genes For example, people of White heritage often see their first greys in their mid-30s, those of Asian descent in their late 30s and individuals of African descent in their mid-40s. If it kicks off earlier - say, before 20 for Caucasians, 25 for Asians, or 30 for people of African background - that's classed as premature greying."
The expert also said the natural shade of your hair can also make a difference in how quickly you notice the grey or silver strands. "Grey strands are far more obvious against dark hair, so they often stand out earlier. With lighter hair - like blonde - it can take longer to spot, even if just as much pigment loss is happening underneath," Dr Misra-Sharp explained.

At only 15, Shannon Turner suffered a near-deadly case of toxic shock syndrome, which was so severe she was given a 50 percent chance of survival - all from using a tampon. Now, she has laid bare the horrifying ordeal exclusively with the Daily Mail. 'It put me in a coma and nearly took my life - I hadn't even had my period for a full year yet,' Shannon, who was on a family vacation at the time, explained. Shannon revealed she began to feel ill in the evening after she landed, but she assumed it was just jet lag and tried to sleep it off. But she woke up the next day with extreme symptoms, including: vomiting, diarrhea, a fever, and fatigue. 'I was brought to the doctor that afternoon, given a shot for nausea, and sent home,' she continued. 'I continued to deteriorate and was brought back to the doctor later that same day.' 'My last memory is collapsing in the office and laying on the ground because it hurt too much to sit up,' she recalled. 'My heart rate was extremely high, my blood pressure was dangerously low, and I was rushed to the ICU. I didn't wake up until a few days later.' Toxic Shock Syndrome is a 'rare complication of certain types of bacterial infections,' according to MayoClinic. 'It can be fatal. 'Risk factors for toxic shock syndrome include skin wounds, surgery, and the use of tampons and other devices, such as menstrual cups and birth control sponges or diaphragms.' While Shannon was unconscious, doctors worked furiously to diagnose her - initially misdiagnosing her with meningitis and nearly performed an unnecessary spinal tap. 'Thankfully, my mom mentioned to a family member that I was on my period - and that's when menstrual toxic shock syndrome (mTSS) was suggested,' she shared. 'The doctors were informed and my treatment plan shifted. I was incredibly lucky the infectious disease doctor on call had studied toxic shock and knew exactly what to do, but because mTSS progresses so quickly, I was still given a 50/50 chance of survival.' She explained that after the doctors saved her life, she was sent home with 'little guidance' on what to expect during recovery, or how long her symptoms would last - and the aftermath was brutal. 'My hospital stay was only a few days, but the recovery afterward took much longer,' Shannon said. 'I dealt with memory loss, anxiety, attention issues, and depression. My periods also became extremely painful. 'From the age of 15, I was put on prescription painkillers to manage my menstrual pain.' Her experience led to her starting her nonprofit, Protect Her Inc., which is dedicated to 'revolutionizing menstrual health education.' 'We believe knowledge is power - and yet, so many people are navigating their cycles with almost none,' she pointed out. 'I began to see why [there were no recourses], because periods have been taboo for far too long. It's the same reason I never talked about my experience with mTSS, and that silence was incredibly isolating.' Now, over 15 years later, Shannon regularly shares tips on how to avoid the life-threatening situation happening to other people - as well as the symptoms she ignored. 'My message to anyone using tampons is: use the lowest absorbency possible. Your tampon should be saturated when you remove it - if your flow is light, opt for a liner instead,' she listed. She also advises against using tampons overnight, noting if you begin to get sick you won't notice the symptoms if you're asleep. 'We need to stay aware of what our bodies are telling us - especially when there's a foreign object inside us,' she pointed out. Shannon added it's important to learn about the brands of sanitary products you're using, and make sure you're comfortable with their ingredients and manufacturing standards. 'Most importantly, be in tune with your body. It's always communicating with us, if we take the time to listen,' she urged. Shannon also advises people to immediately take a tampon out if they start feeling sick - describing the symptoms as flu-like. 'So [if you experience] headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever - take the tampon out,' she insisted. 'If you feel even worse go seek medical attention.' Shannon now hopes to educate young women through her non-profit, Protect Her Inc, which provides comprehensive menstrual education to adolescents aged seven to 18, with 'a focus on practical knowledge that fosters confidence, health literacy, and open dialogue.' According to National Library of Medicine, studies have shown the risk of mTSS was higher in young women who used tampons, than in women who used menstrual pads. They noted everyone should be aware of the symptoms of mTSS, which are early flu-like symptoms near or during menstruation, including acute onset of fever, vomiting and diarrhea, and progressive dizziness upon standing, and said people should should seek immediate medical attention if experiencing these symptoms.

Rabies is a viral infection spread through bites, scratches or even licks from infected animals. It can take anywhere from a week to a year for symptoms to show, but once they do, the disease is almost always deadly. The NHS says rabies symptoms include: Numbness or tingling where you were bitten or scratched Seeing things that are not there (hallucinations) Feeling very anxious or energetic Difficulty swallowing or breathing Being unable to move (paralysis) The virus attacks the brain and nervous system, and death usually follows within days. There have been less than 10 cases of human rabies associated with animal exposures abroad reported in the UK since 2000. However, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) yesterday stressed there was "no risk to the wider public" given there is "no documented evidence of rabies passing between people". The last death caused by rabies in a UK animal, other than bats, was in 1902. Dog licensing, euthanasia of stray dog and quarantining were credited with killing off the virus. Parts of Spain, specifically North African territories of Ceuta and Melilla, are also high risk - while risk on the mainland remains low. The 'high risk' classification means rabies is known to exist in wild or domestic animals (such as dogs), or there isn't enough data to rule it out. Related viruses found in bats are monitored separately. Using this official data, a map pinpoints the 92 'high risk' hotspots where exposure to rabies from dogs remains a serious threat. Other high-risk countries frequently visited by UK travellers include Thailand, India, Indonesia (including Bali), and South Africa. The data also flags several lesser-known but high-risk areas such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Tanzania. "If you are bitten, scratched or licked by an animal in a country where rabies is found then you should wash the wound or site of exposure with plenty of soap and water and seek medical advice without delay in order to get post-exposure treatment to prevent rabies. "There is no risk to the wider public in relation to this case. "Human cases of rabies are extremely rare in the UK, and worldwide there are no documented instances of direct human to human transmission.'" The course of treatment for rabies is four doses of the vaccination for rabies and human rabies immunoglobulin (antibodies) applied over a 21-day period. The last recorded rabies death in the UK was in 2018, when 58-year-old kebab shop worker Omar Zouhri was bitten by a cat while visiting family in Mehdya, Morocco. He contracted the virus on August 31, but it wasn't until nearly two months later, on October 28, that he began showing symptoms of 'furious rabies', including itching, pain and violent muscle spasms. By then, the virus had reached his central nervous system, making treatment impossible. Omar, from Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, died in hospital in Oxford on November 4.
