While there's little to no doubt that Duke Blue Devils star Cooper Flagg will be selected No. 1 overall by the Dallas Mavericks next week in Brooklyn at the NBA Draft, the projected top pick still traveled to Dallas this week for a private meeting and workout with the organization.

Though everything appeared to go according to plan, some intriguing details have since emerged from the workout—as Flagg prepares to become the new face of the franchise, just months after the Mavericks made the stunning decision to trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers midseason.
According to Mavericks reporter Noah Weber, Flagg was reportedly 'unreal' during Wednesday's workout. One league source told Weber that Flagg shot the ball 'insanely well' and added, 'He was even better than I expected him to be.'
If everything continues to fall into place and Cooper Flagg is selected by the Dallas Mavericks, he would be joining a star-studded roster featuring three potential future Hall of Famers in Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, and former Duke standout Kyrie Irving. He'd also reunite with another former Blue Devil in Dereck Lively II, who was drafted by the Mavericks two seasons ago.

During his freshman season at Duke, Flagg led the team to 35 wins, capturing both the ACC regular season and conference tournament titles. He also helped guide the Blue Devils to the Final Four before they were upset by the Houston Cougars following a late second-half collapse.

Flagg finished the season averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game, while shooting an impressive 38.5% from three-point range. He led the entire Duke roster in points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, and minutes played.
The Newport, Maine native capped off his dominant season by winning the Wooden Award, Naismith College Player of the Year, and earning both ACC Player and Rookie of the Year honors.

Michael Waltrip joins ownership group of AF1's Nashville Kats
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip has joined the ownership group of the Nashville Kats, a founding franchise of the Arena Football 1 league. The Kats announced Waltrip joining the group Friday along with his craft beer company Michael Waltrip Brewing. The ownership group already includes former NFL coach Jon Gruden with Jeff Fisher , a former coach of the Los Angeles Rams and Tennessee Titans, majority owner. 'We now have three living legends attached to the Nashville Kats — Jeff Fisher, Jon Gruden, and Michael Waltrip — all with the ultimate goal to win championships and raise the AF1 to its ultimate potential along with any team associated with the AF1,' said Bobby DeVoursney, the Kats' CEO and managing partner. Waltrip's brewery now is the team's official craft beer. The team also plans a 'Waltrip Winner's Circle' fan zone for the upcoming season. The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF)'s executive committee meeting was met by a swath of loud protesters on Friday. The state's growing "Save Girls Sports" contingency, led by the California Family Council, showed up outside the meeting with t-shirts, signs and even a podium for a press conference. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON Multiple female athletes, parents and state education officials spoke out against the CIF and Governor Gavin Newsom for the policies that have allowed trans athletes to compete in girls' sports, sparking several controversies in the state over the past year alone. California Family Council and outreach director Sophia Lorey also boasted a petition at the event, which has at least 20,074 signatures of Californians urging the CIF and Newsom to change the state's gender eligibility policies. Martin Luther King High School students Taylor Starling and Kaitlyn Slavin, who have filed a lawsuit against the Riverside Unified School District over a situation involving a trans student at their school, headlined the athlete speakers. Starling shared her story of losing her varsity spot on the cross-country team to the trans athlete, while having her "Save Girls Sports" t-shirts compared to swastikas.
