Royals sweep Rangers with 4-1 win for first time since 2003
Top prospect Jac Caglianone went deep twice for his first two homers in the majors, and the Kansas City Royals finished their first three-game sweep at Texas since 2003 with a 4-1 win over the Rangers on Thursday. Vinnie Pasquantino added a two-run shot, and Michael Wacha held the Rangers hitless until Wyatt Langford's one-out single in the sixth. The right-hander allowed two hits and a run with five strikeouts in six innings. Wacha (4-6) was the third Kansas City starter to win for the first time in June as part of the sweep, with the Royals coming off a 0-6 homestand that matched their longest losing streak of the season. Kansas City had already clinched its first series win in Arlington in 11 years. Carlos Estévez pitched a perfect ninth for his AL-leading 21st save and second of the series. Pasquantino's team-leading 11th homer opened the scoring in the first off right-hander Shawn Armstrong, the starter in a bullpen game for Texas. A run of 11 consecutive scoreless appearances ended for Armstrong (2-2). Caglianone greeted Jacob Latz with his first big league homer leading off the second. The 22-year-old won a lefty-lefty matchup with a 387-foot drive into the Texas bullpen in right-center field. The 6-foot-5 Caglianone mastered the lefty-lefty thing again to start the ninth, sending Robert Garcia's first pitch 439 feet over the Texas bullpen. Latz went a career-high 5 2/3 innings, giving up three hits and a run. Adolis García was the potential tying run when Wacha got him on a popout to finish his outing in the sixth. Marcus Semien extended the longest hitting streak for the Rangers this season to 11 games with an RBI double in the sixth. Both teams open road series Friday. RHP Michael Lorenzen (4-7, 4.91 ERA) is set to go for Kansas City against San Diego. Texas RHP Jacob deGrom (6-2, 2.19) is set to face Pittsburgh a day after his 37th birthday.

Juneteenth Celebration recognizes progress and work still to be done
Jun. 19—It was a celebration with meaning as people came out late Thursday afternoon for a Juneteenth Celebration at Lions Park in Austin. A large group from the public came out to take part in community fun including kids games, music and plenty of food. But it was also a celebration of one of the biggest moments in American history when on June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers brought word to Galveston, Texas that slaves there were free. According to Bryan Davis in his welcome to those gathered Thursday, that moment in time became a symbol of justice that came late, but also of hope and perseverance. "Juneteenth reminds us that freedom has never been free," said Davis, who is corporate officer for Black Leaders & Allies Advancing Cultural Knowledge (BLAACK) at Hormel Foods as well as co-chair of the Austin Human Rights commission. "It's been earned through generations of struggle, joy, culture and community. And while we celebrate today, we also reflect on the progress still needed in our workplaces, our neighborhoods and our hearts." A fusion of the words June and nineteenth, Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday for the first time in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed it into law. However, early versions of the celebration dated back to 1866 with church-centered community gatherings in Texas. "As part of the Hormel family and the Austin community, we're proud to continue the tradition of honoring our history, uplifting our people and creating space to be together," Davis said. "Not just as co-workers or community members, but as humans."

Five suspects charged in 2024 double homicide at Arlington short-term rental near AT&T Stadium, police say
Five suspects have been charged with capital murder in connection with a double homicide that occurred in November 2024 at a short-term rental near AT&T Stadium in Arlington. According to police, the apartment at Stadium 700 Apartments — in the 600 block of Slaughter Street — had been booked to celebrate the birthday of one of the teen victims, who was fatally shot just hours before he would have turned 20. Suspects arrested in North Texas The five arrested include: Chrisaveon Whitted, 18 Eddie Walker Jr., 19 Demarian Owens, 21 All three were arrested Wednesday by the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force and Arlington police SWAT. They were transferred to the Tarrant County Jail. Shannon Steele, 20 Steele was already in custody at the Dallas County Jail on an unrelated charge. Diamond Curttie, 26 Curttie was arrested on Thursday by Dallas police. Victims identified by authorities Jaqual Dayton Allen, 19, of Irving, was pronounced dead at the scene. Alexis Tyler, 18, of Mesquite, died later at the hospital. At the time of the shooting, police said they believed the suspects knew the victims. Both were shot multiple times in the living room, and investigators recovered several shell casings at the scene. Witnesses saw suspects flee "This wasn't just one person firing one shot and running out of there," Arlington police spokesperson Tim Ciesco in November 2024. "This was somebody that absolutely intended to kill and harm people. So yeah, certainly we want to do anything we can to try to identify this person or people and get them into custody." Witnesses reported seeing a group of people flee the apartment and drive away shortly after the shooting. Community reacts to violence A longtime complex resident described the area as typically safe and quiet. "It's always been a comfortable environment, it's always been a safe environment, and it's always been a calm, steady pace as far as people," resident Luis Noyola said last November. "They're always nice, friendly. It's just seemingly random, out of the blue for such a horrific event to happen." More details expected Friday Arlington police said they plan to issue a formal news release Friday with additional details.

With June marking the halfway mark of 2025, that means it's list season for a lot of NFL publications. And with 2025 marking the quarter mark of the 21st Century, we get some exclusive lists. On Wednesday morning, ESPN released its NFL All-Quarter Century Team. Advertisement The article named a full 53-man roster and coaching staff comprised of what the publication thought were the best NFL players since 2000. The Houston Texans ended up having five representatives on the team, with four players and one coach making the final cut. Former Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt was among five representatives from the Texans named to ESPN's NFL All-Quarter Century Team on Wednesday.© Thomas Shea-Imagn Images Defensive end J.J. Watt (2011-2020) was the most notable representative from Houston to make the list. The 5x All-Pro and Texans Ring of Honor member was listed as the team's "versatile defensive lineman". "We wanted to save a spot for Watt because he can play as an edge rusher or interior lineman," ESPN writer Aaron Schatz said of Watt's selection. "He is one of only three players in history to win Defensive Player of the Year three times, and he has the best plus-EPA of any player since 2000 (minimum 50 games)." Along with Watt, Vince Wilfork and Ed Reed were also named to the team, at the nose tackle and safety positions respectively. Wilfork and Reed both spent a short amount of time in Houston, with Wilfork wearing the blue and red from 2015-2016 and Reed spending seven games with the Texans in 2013. Advertisement Shane Lechler was selected as the team's punter. Lechler spent five seasons in Houston from 2013-2017 following a 12-year long tenure as the Oakland Raiders punter. Lechler retired in 2017 but was still impressing until the end, leading the league in punt yardage in his age 41 season with Houston. "One of the greatest and longest-tenured punters in NFL history, Lechler was named a first-team All-Pro in his rookie season," Schatz said of Lechler. "Throughout his 18-year career, he racked up more first-team All-Pro selections (six) than any other punter in NFL history (no one has had more than four). Lechler led the league in gross punt average in five seasons, and his career average in yards per punt is an NFL record for punters who have played over 120 games." The Texans didn't just have players represented on the list, as former defensive coordinator and interim head coach Wade Phillips was selected as the team's defensive coordinator. Phillips was on Gary Kubiak's staff from 2011-2013 and took over as interim head coach following Kubiak's dismissal after starting 2-10 in 2013. Advertisement Speaking on Phillips' time in Houston, Schatz said, "He took the Texans' defense -- with some help from rookie J.J. Watt, of course -- from 30th in 2010 to eighth in 2011. Then he took the Broncos to No. 1 in defensive DVOA in both 2015 and 2016, with a Super Bowl championship. Including Phillips' stops as a head coach (Bills and Cowboys), his defenses have ranked in the top half of the league in 15 of 18 seasons since 2000."
