Rod Moore's comeback fuels deep Michigan safety unit, PFF's 2026 NFL draft watchlist star
Michigan football might not be considered a preseason national championship or Big Ten contender entering 2025, but it certainly has some loaded position groups.
The defensive tackle position, in particular, is quite loaded, with six Wolverines who might be considered starting-caliber players in Rayshaun Benny, Tré Williams, Damon Payne, Trey Pierce, Ike Iwunnah, and Enow Etta all set to rotate in the middle of the defensive front. The linebacker corps is increasing in depth, with two starters in Ernest Hausmann and Jaishawn Barham, while Jimmy Rolder (considered by the coaches to be a third starter), Cole Sullivan, Jaydon Hood (who was injured in spring ball), and freshmen Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng and Chase Taylor all in contention.
Just as deep is the safety group, and one Wolverine is being singled out as a player to watch this year with eyes on next year's NFL draft.
Rod Moore is returning in 2025
A team captain, Rod Moore was a mainstay in the defensive backfield in his first three years in Ann Arbor, but the former three-star sustained an ACL tear early in spring ball last year, precluding him from playing in 2024. Though he was thought to potentially be capable of playing late in the season, he suffered a setback and only started running on solid ground this week -- over a year after his injury.
Knowing his potential, PFF put out a list of 10 safeties that fans should know about with eyes on the 2026 NFL draft, and Moore was one of the included players.
Perhaps bittersweet is that former Wolverines safety Keon Sabb -- who had exemplary play in 2023 en route to Michigan's national championship -- is included, but now as an Alabama player. Sabb transferred to Tuscaloosa during the 2024 offseason.
Other safeties are standing out for Michigan
As noted, the safety position is particularly loaded. If Moore takes some time to fully reacclimate to playing at a high level (as was the case following a more minor injury in 2023) there are several other candidates who can help fill that void.
Brandyn Hillman, entering his third year, is expected to start opposite Moore, but Mason Curtis, TJ Metcalf, Tevis Metcalf, and Jaden Mangham are all candidates to be in rotation. The Wolverines also brought in three four-star recruits at the position, with Jordan Young enrolling early and getting a head start as a first-year player, while Kainoa Winston and Elijah Dotson are poised to join the team this summer.
The question for the Wolverines is less in the middle of the defensive backfield, but more on the boundaries. While Zeke Berry and Jyaire Hill are expected to start at cornerback for the maize and blue, the depth behind them is a little questionable, if not inexperienced. Second-year corner Jo'Ziah Edmond and true freshman Shamari Earls could be in rotation, but behind them, there are no clear options if Michigan needs to dig deeper into the bench.

5 San Francisco 49ers who could win NFL MVP award in 2025
The San Francisco 49ers haven't had an NFL MVP award winner since 1994 when quarterback Steve Young took home the trophy for a second time in three seasons. They got close in 2023 when running back Christian McCaffrey and quarterback Brock Purdy finished No. 3 and No. 4 in the voting, respectively. We were sifting through their chances to snag an MVP winner for the first time in more than 30 years and came up with five players who could bring the award back to the Bay Area: 5. LB Fred Warner It's admittedly hard to fathom a linebacker winning an MVP award. We picked Warner out of respect for his all-around skill set and the fact he was a First-Team All-Pro last year despite playing from Week 4 on with a fractured ankle. If the 49ers have the No. 1 defense and Warner leads the way with a few interceptions, a handful of sacks, and some dominant prime time performances, perhaps an off-ball LB works his way into the MVP conversation. 4. QB Mac Jones Look, at least we're making Jones the No. 4 candidate and not No. 1 like some people did after Sam Darnold signed with the 49ers ahead of the 2023 season. That was actually a thing. While Jones hasn't been particularly good since his rookie season, he's still a quarterback which gives him a major boost in the MVP discussion. If Purdy gets hurt early in the year and Jones steps into head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense, thrives and leads San Francisco to a division title, he would at the very least be in the discussion for the award. 3. DE Nick Bosa Playing a high-profile position where sacks offer a flashy, catch-all stat for voters to cite helps Bosa's case quite a bit over other defensive players. The 49ers would love to get a year from their former Defensive Player of the Year where he leaps into the MVP conversation. If he does, it means he's in the 20-plus sack realm and spearheading a defense that is one of the NFL's most dominant units. 2. RB Christian McCaffrey We don't need to reach very far to make McCaffrey an MVP candidate considering he finished third in MVP voting just two years ago. Despite his recent injury problems, McCaffrey is still the most unique playmaker on the 49ers. Quarterback Brock Purdy may have to rely on McCaffrey a lot as a receiver, putting another season with 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards on the table. If he hits those benchmarks on a high-octane 49ers offense, he'll be back in the MVP mix. 1. QB Brock Purdy The 49ers paid Purdy like a player who can win an MVP, and he played like that in 2023. Last season he took a step back, but if he and the 49ers improve this year, and the 49ers offense gets back to scoring 30 points on almost everyone, he'll be prominent in the MVP discourse.

This added to his portfolio in the sports world, as he also holds ownership stakes in the Philadelphia 76ers (NBA) and New Jersey Devils (NHL). Seeing that the Commanders were just one win away from being in the Super Bowl last year, purchasing the franchise has served to be a good investment. After paying a massive amount for the card, Harris will want to see the value increase due to continued strong play. Looking ahead to the 2025 campaign, Daniels is a player many will have their eyes on. He showed the potential to be a future superstar in the league and now is tasked with avoiding a sophomore slump. The front office did its part in trying to prevent him from taking a step back, adding multiple new weapons around him.
