Casemiro claims season has been 'successful' despite Man Utd misery
Even though Manchester United achieved their lowest finish in Premier League history, midfielder Casemiro stated that the 2024/25 season has been one of the "most successful" of his career to date
Casemiro has surprisingly deemed this season one of his "most successful" after earning the trust of Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim, despite a challenging period for the team. The Brazilian midfielder appeared to be on his way out of Old Trafford in January, after talks of a move to Saudi Arabia were bandied about last summer and re-emerged during the winter window.
Yet when the dust settled, Casemiro remained with United. After initially falling out of Portuguese coach Amorim's favour, by around February he began to carve out more regular playing time in the Premier League and European competitions.
The 33-year-old became integral to the squad that battled its way to the Europa League final, noticing an uptick in appearances as the season drew to a close.
Casemiro, while on duty with the Brazil national team, has now shed light on discussions held with Amorim earlier in his tenure, boldly stating that, for him, personally, it was indeed a successful year.
"This year has been one of the most important years of my career, if not the most. Even because of the coach's choice [Ruben Amorim]. I was left out [of the options], but I never stopped working," Casemiro revealed.
"That's my great success. Everyone wants to talk about titles, victories and big games, but when you don't play and you manage to change the mind of a coach who arrives and doesn't play you.
"You end up coming back, and now you're being praised by the coach who at first practically didn't count on you... it was one of my most successful years.
"These are things that end up happening internally. I'm one of those people who, when things happen internally, I don't like to say too much."
Despite United's struggles, Casemiro donned the Red Devils' kit 42 times this term, netting five times and contributing three assists.
His personal comeback stands in stark contrast to United's disappointing campaign, which saw them lumber to their lowest Premier League ranking in history, finishing 15th, and suffering 14 defeats, a figure not seen since 1990.
The Brazilian midfielder faced severe criticism in September following a harrowing first-half display against Liverpool, where his error led to Luis Diaz opening the scoring after just 35 minutes. Not long after, Casemiro lost possession again, allowing Diaz to score once more before Erik ten Hag subbed him off at the break, with United eventual 3-0 losers.
Casemiro shed light on his discussions with his manager during challenging times, stating (via the Manchester Evening News): "I don't think there's been such a big relapse in my individual aspect, but when the club isn't playing well, changes are needed.
"I spoke to him [Amorim] and he told me that it was more a question of choosing to play, that I should wait for the opportunity. Of course, he was open with me.
"He said it was his choice, nothing against me. I had no choice but to carry on working and wait for the opportunity. When I played, I lived up to what he asked."

Thomas Frank labelled 'too soft' despite brutally quitting old job over chairman
Former Denmark international defender Martin Albrechtsen played under Thomas Frank at Brondby and has now shed light on his compatriot's first ever managerial role at club level following his appointment at Tottenham Tottenham's players are going to have a ball in pre-season - once they've navigated Thomas Frank's 1km time trial. He explained: "I've had a taste of both worlds, the totally crazy pre-season regimes and also managers that think differently. "With Thomas, his coaches and physios organise the sessions but he's mindful of the bigger picture, it's not just about running 20km, there was a clear plan and he knew how to schedule things. "He thought about recovery and that if we're training tomorrow, we don't want injuries. His mindset was not about short-term gain and smashing people to their absolute limit, it was more about improving our conditioning and sharpness." Former Denmark international Albrechtsen, who retired last summer, spent four years at The Hawthorns between 2004 and 2008 and his recollections of pre-season still haunt him to this very day. The 45-year-old continued: "Life under Gary Megson was a bit special. We had this coach that would make us run in this park in Sutton Coldfield, it was the hardest thing I've ever done in my career. I lost around 5kg, I wasn't very big back then anyway so it was a real culture shock. "I don't know any player that would enjoy running in a forest for two hours non-stop, they thought we were in good shape but we were not ready to play football because our bodies were so fatigued. Thomas likes to involve the ball a lot, there were still interval runs but you were getting a feel for the ball which goes a long way." Daniel Levy recently declared Frank's ability to develop young talent speaks for itself. But now, he'll also be dealing with big-name characters at Spurs and Albrechtsen recalls he was notably "soft" throughout his time at Brondby. He continued: "I think he was maybe just a bit too soft. We were a group of older players that were used to a harder, tougher mentality so we were missing that direct, rougher managerial approach at times. That said, it was around 10 years ago now and I'd expect he's changed given his success." Ange Postecoglou was unable to appease Levy despite ending Spurs' 17-year wait for silverware and if you thought the circumstances surrounding the Aussie's exit were bizarre, Frank can go one better. He resigned as Brondby boss in 2016 after it emerged the club's chairman, Jan Bech Andersen, had been scrutinising Frank via an anonymous profile on a fans' forum site. Albrechtsen revealed: "Yes, it's true. It was a tough few years with financial struggles and we were nearly relegated so we were used to noise and stories, in a way, it just felt like another day at the office! "Still, it was really strange but perhaps it was a good thing because we weren't performing well and if we carried on, Thomas may have been sacked."

Brighton and Forest locked in Cuiabano transfer battle after three rejected bids
Brighton and Nottingham Forest are going head-to-head for Botafogo left-back Cuiabano, who is currently away at the Club World Cup Brighton are refusing to give up on the signing of Botafogo left-back Cuiabano - despite seeing three bids rejected for the 22-year-old Brazilian. Nottingham Forest have also attempted to sign Cuiabano and their interest in the player remains strong. The Tricky Trees have already agreed a £30million package deal with Botafogo for striker Igor Jesus and centre-back Jair Cunha, who will both move to the City Ground following their participation in the Club World Cup. However, so far, they've been unable to strike an agreement for Cuiabano and the race for his signature remains open. Brighton's latest offer was worth in the region of £7.7m including add-ons but it was still not enough to satisfy Botafogo's valuation. The defender has been used from the bench in both of Botafogo's Club World Cup fixtures including the impressive 1-0 scalp over European Champions PSG. Brighton are exploring the signing of a new left-back despite handing Tariq Lamptey a new contract as Pervis Estupinan has told the Seagulls that he's open to a new challenge. Estupinan told El Canal Del Futbol while away on international duty: 'The truth is they have been three years in Brighton with a lot of learning. But this will be a transfer market with a lot of movement. The club know that I would like to grow, that I would like to keep growing. 'The club have understood this. I've spoken to the club. The club have given me this bit of freedom to be able to make a decision. Now we will try to see better what is on the table and to see where we can go." Meanwhile, Forest boss Nuno Espírito Santo has signed a new three-year Nottingham Forest contract until the summer of 2028. The Portuguese boss guided the Tricky Trees to their highest league finish in 30 years to qualify for the UEFA Conference League. Next season will be the first time the City Ground has staged European football since the 1995-96 campaign. Nuno replaced previous boss Steve Cooper in December 2023 and later guided Forest to survival on the final day of the season before securing a seventh-place finish. Forest also reached the FA Cup semi-finals this term. The 51-year-old said upon penning his new deal: "I am delighted to be able to continue our journey at this fantastic football club. "Since we arrived at Forest, we have worked extremely hard to create a special bond between the players, the fans and everyone at the club, which helped us achieve great things last season."
