Rs 150 crore sanctioned for Tungabhadra barrage-cum-bridge to ease Haveri's water woes
HAVERI: The Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited (KNNL) sanctioned Rs 150 crore for building a barrage across the Tungabhadra River near Kancharagatti in Haveri taluk. The project received approval during the KNNL board of directors' meeting on Jan 25, 2025.
The board advised submitting a DPR (detailed project report) to obtain govt administrative approval. KNNL allocated Rs 50 crore initially for the project and set aside Rs 50 lakh for DPR preparation.
The initiative will support 17 tanks under the Budapanahalli Lift Irrigation scheme while addressing drinking water requirements in Guttal and Haveri city. Despite 28 years since the Haveri district's establishment, the city continues to face severe drinking water shortages.
Although the Haveri City Municipal Council maintains water lifting facilities at the Tungabhadra River near Kancharagatti and Karjagi from the Varada River, both sources run dry during summer.
The request for a barrage across the Tungabhadra River for drinking water has persisted for 20 years, with previous administrations taking no action. Currently, with support from deputy speaker and MLA Rudrappa Lamani and Haveri district minister Shivanand Patil, residents are optimistic about their longstanding request being fulfilled.

Build PMAY Schemes With 1,000 Flats In Each Of 6 Constituencies, Says CM
Nagpur: In a major milestone under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Sunday handed over possession of 480 flats to economically weaker section (EWS) beneficiaries under the project Swapniketan, located at Mouza Wanjara. The symbolic key was handed over by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis , along with guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule and minister of state Ashish Jaiswal. Addressing the gathering, CM Fadnavis congratulated the new homeowners and praised the quality of construction undertaken by NMC. "The same quality flat is being sold for Rs18 lakh in the adjacent scheme, but citizens are getting the flat under PMAY for Rs9 lakh," said Fadnavis. He also proposed that similar PMAY buildings — with at least 1,000 flats — should be developed in each of Nagpur's six assembly constituencies to ensure accessible housing for all. "PM Modi has already provided funds for building 30 lakh houses in the state this year. Out of the 12 crore population of Maharashtra, over 1.5 crore will be able to live in their own homes thanks to PM Modi," said Fadnavis. Stressing Nagpur's place among India's green cities, he encouraged citizens to reduce private vehicle usage and make greater use of the eco-friendly electric bus service made available by the city administration. "Steps are being taken so that the private vehicle usage is reduced in the city and people should use public transport. In the future, Metro and E-bus services will be provided within 300m to 500m distance from any person's home, especially in suburbs," said Fadnavis. ‘We all can contribute towards achieving goals through sustainable consumption'

While speaking to Dhrubajyoti Malakar, Reddy shares his vision and plans for Jharkhand and the country at large on sustainable development. First of all, congratulations to you for assuming the coveted post. How are you feeling about it? Thank you. It feels good to receive such acknowledgements. It also brings a renewed sense of responsibility towards the field I have been associated with and a motivation to do good work for society. Tell us about UNGCNI. Global Compact Network India is one of the United Nations agencies like UNICEF, UNDP, and UNESCO, etc. It was established in India in 2000. UN Global Compact Network is the largest organisation engaged in corporate sustainability across the globe. And in India as well, it is the largest organisation engaged with different corporates, PSUs, and NGOs. To achieve the goals, not only the govts but the citizens also have to start acting responsibly. What are your visions and plans to address the shortcomings after assuming the post? We are focusing on engaging with more stakeholders in coming days. Our stakeholders are the state govts, union govts, corporate and PSUs. We are also planning to establish four or five regional hubs across the country to ensure better coordination, capacity building with the states. We are also planning to form goal-based sub committees for better monitoring on implementation of the SDGs. Apart from this, UNGCNI is going to target more MSMEs for strengthening our partnerships. How do you think your association with UNGCNI is going to benefit Jharkhand? As I said, we are focusing on building partnerships with various entities and sensitising them more on adhering to the SDGs, which will prove to be beneficial for Jharkhand and the country as well. How can commoners contribute to achieving the SDGs? We all can contribute towards achieving the goals through responsible consumption. Natural resources are limited, we have to make sure how responsibly we consume. For example, while taking a bath, if we use a bucket instead of a shower, we will be able to lower the burden on the planet to a great extent.
