Permit factories to export sugar: Karnataka minister urges Centre
BELAGAVI: Karnataka Sugar, Sugarcane Development and Agriculture Marketing Minister Shivanand Patil has urged the Union Government to permit sugar factories to export sugar, emphasising that such a move is essential to safeguard the interests of sugarcane farmers. Addressing the media after attending the annual general meeting of S Nijalingappa Sugar Institute, Belagavi, Patil asserted that only if the Centre allows sugar exports can the huge dues owed to sugarcane farmers be settled. He said many factories are unable to pay the farmers as they have unsold sugar stocks, and they lack separate funds to clear pending bills. Allowing exports would enable these factories to generate revenue and clear farmers' dues, he said. Patil criticised the Centre's decision to permit the import of Tur dal despite adequate domestic production. 'As a result, the price of tur has fallen to Rs 90 per kg. The Union Government must carefully consider what commodities need to be imported and what should be permitted for export,' he said. Patil urged the Centre to take a more thoughtful approach to prevent such distress situations in the future.

Minister Shivanand appeals to Centre to allow sugar export
Belagavi: Sugar minister Shivanand Patil said the central govt should lift the restrictions on sugar cane export. He also appealed to govt to prioritise the welfare of sugar cane growers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking to the media after a meeting at S Nijalingappa Sugar Institute, Patil opined that the welfare of cane growers can be protected only if the central govt allows sugar export. "Many factories left the pending sugar cane bills to farmers because they were not allowed to export. The factories do not have separate capital to pay the bills," the minister said. "Tur is being grown in a significant amount in our country. However, the central govt allowed its import. Due to this, the price of tur has fallen to Rs 90 per kg. The Centre should think about what should be imported and what should be allowed to be exported. The prices of onions and tomatoes should not fall, and farmers should not throw them on the road. The Centre should think in this regard," he said. Competition with Maha sugar industries "The Karnataka govt hopes to give competition to the Maharashtra sugar industry, and in this regard, the state's sugar factories will be provided with necessary help and cooperation," said Patil. Speaking after the presentation of awards to sugar factories that performed well in various categories, the minister said sugar factories should keep the interests of farmers in mind along with their progress. "In recent days, the rise of contract farming has raised concerns as it will destroy the fertility of the soil. Factories should create awareness among farmers about this. The responsibility of managing farmers' land also lies with the factories," he said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The central govt announced many new projects, including ethanol. The sugar factories in Karnataka should become a model for other states by utilising these facilities," he added. College bldg at Rs 20cr S Nijalingappa Sugar Institute is starting undergraduate and postgraduate courses in alcohol technology and sugar technology. The college building will be constructed at a cost of Rs 20 crore, the minister said. The institute was established with a view to the growth of the sugar industry, and necessary help and cooperation is being provided to the sugar industry. Sugar cane was cultivated in about 6 lakh hectares in the state for the past two years, and due to good rainfall, it is expected that another 1 lakh hectares will be added. Factories facing sugar cane shortage will no longer face issues.

We're ready to raise Almatti dam height if there are no legal problems, says Minister
The State government is ready to increase the height of the Lal Bahadur Shastri reservoir on the Krishna at Almatti if there are no legal problems, Minister M.B. Patil said in Vijayapura on Sunday. He was responding to a suggestion by Minister Shivanand Patil that the State will not face any legal problems if it were to increase the height of the dam by one metre. This suggestion, Mr. Shivanand Patil claimed, was given by senior advocate Mohan Kataraki, who has represented the State in the Supreme Court. M.B. Patil said that he has no information of such a suggestion by Mr. Kataraki. 'However, we are open minded about it. We will consult our legal team and go ahead with increasing the dam height if it will not invite any legal challenges. We are willing to take up land acquisition and rehabilitation, if the height is to be increased,' the Minister for Industries said. M.B. Patil dismissed statement made by some farmers leaders and politicians in Maharashtra that impounding water in the Almatti is leading to flooding in Maharashtra, saying they have no scientific basis. 'There have been two study reports that have proved that impounding of water in the Almatti has no effect on flooding in Maharashtra. This is an unfounded belief. There is no need to panic,' he said. Earlier, he chaired an urgent meeting of officials for flood control, COVID-19 preparedness, moon preparations and a review of the district's standing in SSLC and PU examination results. He also spoke to officials about preparing for a Cabinet meeting in Vijayapura district. He told reporters that the government will consider all options to improve the quality of education, including exploring possibilities of working with private institutions. To a query, he said that he will speak to Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna to provide direct railway connectivity to Vijayapura from Hubballi and Hosapete. M.B. Patil said that the State government will file an appeal in the Supreme Court to clear hurdles for the airport in Vijayapura. He laid the foundation stone for basic amenities like high-mast electric lights, bus facilities and sewage system in the Karnataka Housing Board Colony on Ittangihal Road. A water supply project at an estimated cost of ₹90 lakh was launched. He thanked residents for planting 1,500 trees. The Minister inaugurated an indoor stadium in Kanakadas Colony that has a gymnasium, shuttle badminton court, basketball and other facilities. He also inaugurated a unit of the Indira Canteen inaugurated on the District Hospital premises. MLA Viththal Katakadond, Urban Development Authority chairman Abdul Hameed Mushrif, Deputy Commissioner T. Bhoobalan, City Corporation Commissioner Vijaykumar Mekkalaki, officers, community leaders and others were present.

June 1 deadline for traders in Yeshwantpur APMC to shift to Dasanapura
Bengaluru: Although the govt issued an order to relocate over 200 shops from congested Yeshwantpur APMC yard to Dasanapura over two years ago, the decision faced stiff resistance and eventually fell flat. But recent rain has provided the govt with another opportunity, and APMC minister Shivanand Patil is determined to make full use of it. Clogged drains — from discarded food produce — had led to flooding in Yeshwantpur and surrounding areas. The govt drew much flak, and Patil is now determined to act. "Running a wholesale market inside the city is unnecessary," Patil said. "Shifting shops to Dasanapura will help ease traffic congestion on major roads and junctions in the northwestern part of the city, including Goraguntepalya." Agricultural marketing department sources say a fresh relocation order is expected by June 1. The new location — Dasanapura APMC sub-market yard, near Madanayakanahalli on Tumakuru Road — is up and running and ready to accommodate shops. "We will issue an order by Tuesday or Wednesday," officials said. Patil acknowledged that some traders had initially opposed the move and had approached court. "The court had ruled in the govts favour. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! Patil said his department has addressed this by leasing 16 acres of land from Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). "The deal is that we pay Rs 3 lakh to BMTC to use its land. Traders can park trucks carrying agricultural products there," the minister said. Meanwhile, Dasanapura APMC Merchants Association flagged another issue — pressure from some officials to return their allotted shops to the govt. The association wrote to chief minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar seeking their intervention. In response, the govt last week deployed principal secretary Major Manivannan P to meet with merchants and officials. He directed officials not to coerce traders into surrendering their shops. "Yes, some officials did try to force traders to return allotted shops. However, the issue was resolved. We are now ready to shift to Dasanapura," said Srirama Reddy, president, Dasanapura APMC Merchants Association. He said shops were originally allotted in 2017-18, and some traders had moved to the new premises just before the pandemic hit in 2020. "Initially, business was good but then it dropped," said Reddy. "Many traders (especially those dealing in onions, garlic and potatoes) returned to Yeshwantpur. There are 212 shops in Yeshwantpur, while Dasanapura has 310 ready-to-move-in shops. So, all traders can open their shops in Dasanapura now. "

Rs 150 crore sanctioned for Tungabhadra barrage-cum-bridge to ease Haveri's water woes
HAVERI: The Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Limited (KNNL) sanctioned Rs 150 crore for building a barrage across the Tungabhadra River near Kancharagatti in Haveri taluk. The project received approval during the KNNL board of directors' meeting on Jan 25, 2025. The board advised submitting a DPR (detailed project report) to obtain govt administrative approval. KNNL allocated Rs 50 crore initially for the project and set aside Rs 50 lakh for DPR preparation. The initiative will support 17 tanks under the Budapanahalli Lift Irrigation scheme while addressing drinking water requirements in Guttal and Haveri city. Despite 28 years since the Haveri district's establishment, the city continues to face severe drinking water shortages. Although the Haveri City Municipal Council maintains water lifting facilities at the Tungabhadra River near Kancharagatti and Karjagi from the Varada River, both sources run dry during summer. The request for a barrage across the Tungabhadra River for drinking water has persisted for 20 years, with previous administrations taking no action. Currently, with support from deputy speaker and MLA Rudrappa Lamani and Haveri district minister Shivanand Patil, residents are optimistic about their longstanding request being fulfilled. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esta nueva alarma con cámara es casi regalada en Almafuerte (ver precio) Verisure Undo Shivanand Patil said: "I will direct the officers concerned to call a tender for fixing an agency to prepare the DPR for constructing a barrage across the Tungabhadra River.
