Lizard found in snack distributed during Naan Mudhalvan programme at UoM
CHENNAI: Panic prevailed at the Naan Mudhalvan faculty development programme (FDP), organised at University of Madras, Guindy campus, on Wednesday after the participating teachers found a dead lizard in the snack offered to them. The training programme was suspended after the incident.
It was alleged that about 10 faculty members experienced uneasiness and vomited after having the snack. Over 100 teachers from various government arts and science colleges and schools in the city are participating in the five day training programme that started on Monday. They were served sundal (boiled chickpeas) during the snack break at 11.30 am.
After a majority of the attendees had eaten the snack, a few of the participants noticed a dead lizard at the bottom of the container. As the news spread, panic stricken teachers started complaining of dizziness and vomiting. Few rushed to private hospitals on their own.
'We informed Naan Mudhalvan officials immediately after the incident but there was no response for hours. Only after we sat on dharna, around 3 pm, did they send a medical team to examine us,' said a teacher of Pachaiyappa's college.
Meanwhile, Naan Mudhalvan officials said all the teachers were fine. 'As soon as we got information, a medical team was sent,' said a senior official.

Teachers protest after dead lizards were found in snack at Madras varsity
The University of Madras faced much flak after teachers complained of having found dead lizards in a snack that was served to them during a programme held in the university's Guindy campus. The incident happened on the third day of the ongoing training programme, coordinated by the placement cell of the university, under the Naan Mudhalvan scheme. As part of the event, around 100 participants, lecturers from colleges and teachers from schools, have been undergoing training for the past three days to prepare students to face competitive exams. A university official said that after the teachers complained of feeling sick, they were examined but did not require hospitalisation. Four 108-ambulances were stationed as a precautionary measure, the official added. Sources said that the dead lizards were found in the sundal that was offered to the teachers as a mid-morning snack. The participants sat in dharna on the campus demanding an explanation.

Med facilitation cell to help Tamils living overseas: Minister S M Nasar
CHENNAI: A medical facilitation cell will be established to provide streamlined healthcare access to members of non-resident Tamils welfare board in hospitals, Minister for Minorities Welfare S M Nasar said on Tuesday. The cell will serve as a single-window system enabling non-resident Tamils to connect with hospitals in the state, schedule treatment in advance, and arrange accommodation among other essential services. The scheme will be implemented in collaboration with Tamil Sangams across the world and supported by the health department, he said. Nasar also announced the launch of TNSKILLS International, aimed at helping youth trained under the 'Naan Mudhalvan' scheme secure jobs abroad. 'Special focus will be placed on professional sectors such as healthcare, engineering, IT and manufacturing. Youth will be trained in written and spoken English, French, German and Arabic to expand their job prospects in various countries,' he added. In another announcement, Nasar said 25 Sri Lankan Tamils rehabilitation camps across the state will get a library each with computer facility at a cost rs 49.87 lakh. A comprehensive land survey of Waqf properties across the state will be undertaken and the data will be uploaded on Collabland software platform. To support this initiative, 20 additional licenced land surveyors will be appointed, and a sum of Rs 2.28 crore has been allocated.
