Monsoon in Kerala make it unsafe to eat food from hotels, road-side stalls

Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 15 (UNI) The Kerala Food Safety Department has recently flagged off 'Operation Monsoon' drive after the outbreak of umpteen cases of food poisoning in the state so
as to prevent further spread of communicable diseases.
The monsoon season exposes Keralites to many pathogens leading to an increase in communicable diseases.
Therefore monsoon in Kerala make it unsafe to eat food from hotels or road-side stalls, said Dr Naresh Purohit, Advisor, National Communicable Disease Control Programme (NCDCP) .
Raising concern on this issue in a statement here, renowned Epidemiologist, Dr Purohit pointed that the monsoon season contributes to a rise in gastroenteritis cases, and food poisoning is a significant factor.
The elevated humidity during this period creates a favourable environment for the proliferation of bacteria and other micro-organisms.
This increased microbial activity in food is a primary cause of food poisoning. There is a strong emphasis on the role of contaminated food, with street food being a notable source of concern
due to potential unhygienic preparation and handling practices.
"Food poisoning during monsoon is largely triggered by the growth of bacteria, viruses, and parasites in food and water due to the damp and humid climate. Poor hygiene practices like unwashed hands, consumption of unclean or street food, use of contaminated water, and inadequate food storage all contribute to increased infection risk. Bacterial contamination, such as E.coli, Salmonella and Shigella, and viruses like norovirus and rotavirus are commonly implicated in monsoon-related gastrointestinal illnesses," he revealed
"Mostly, it is the perishable and improperly stored foods that pose the highest risk of poisoning. For instance, leafy vegetables, which often carry soil-borne pathogens, can harbour E.coli or parasites if not thoroughly washed. Street food like chaats, golgappa, and cut fruits are prone to contamination due to unhygienic handling. Dairy products can turn rancid quickly if left unrefrigerated. Seafood, too, can rapidly spoil due to humid conditions. Fermented foods and those rich in starch can also promote microbial growth if not handled properly," he added.
Noted Infectious Disease expert averred that a prominent symptom of food poisoning is loose motions or diarrhoea. It's important to recognize that individuals with pre-existing health conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, or underlying heart or lung illnesses, are considered more vulnerable to experiencing severe complications of food poisoning, he said.
"The damp monsoon environment often delays recovery due to recurring exposure to pathogens, especially in areas with poor sanitation. Prompt medical attention is essential for managing these effects effectively." he added.
"Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to food poisoning due to their weaker immunity. Adults with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, compromised immune systems, hypertension, or underlying heart or lung illnesses are also at higher risk."
"Children under five, elderly individuals, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems are particularly susceptible to food poisoning because their immune responses are either underdeveloped or weakened, making it harder to combat infections," he cautioned.
He emphasised to prevent food poisoning by washing hands thoroughly before eating or cooking. Drink only boiled or filtered water and to avoid street food and uncovered meals Wash fruits and vegetables properly and to store food in airtight containers and refrigerate promptly. Make a habit
to refrain from consuming stale or reheated food and prefer freshly cooked, home-made meals.

Lucknow, June 20 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh government has made extensive preparations for the 11th International Yoga Day, with more than 100 Yoga Parks developed across the state, official sources said here on Friday. Sources said that in line with the vision of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Urban Development Department has set up these Yoga Parks in every urban local body across the state, providing all the necessary facilities for yoga and related activities. Sources said that the parks have been developed as spaces where people can come together to practice yoga, both on International Yoga Day, to be celebrated on June 21, — and throughout the year for regular yoga and other health-promoting activities. Developed in accordance with the standards set by the Ministry of Ayush, these Yoga Parks are designed to accommodate the theme of this year's International Yoga Day, "Yoga for One Earth, One Health". Through this initiative, the state aims to create long‑term spaces where communities can continue to practice yoga and adopt a healthier lifestyle well beyond the annual celebration. According to instructions from Amrit Abhijat, the Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department, Yoga Parks have been developed in urban bodies across the state. In Varanasi municipal corporation, Yoga will be held in Shaheed Udyan, Beniya Bagh Park, Harishchandra Park, as well as at Namo Ghat, Assi Ghat, and Ravidas Ghat. In Agra municipal corporation, Yoga Parks have been set up at Balkeshwar Park, Central Park in Awas Vikas, Kalindi Park, and the Municipal Corporation Office Park. In Lucknow, nine Yoga Parks have been developed, including Gulab Park, Swarn Jayanti Park, Jhande Wala Park, and ED Park. In Kanpur, Yoga Parks have been created in Nana Rao Park, Buddha Park, Sanjay Van, and Parshuram Vatika. Jhansi has the highest number, with about 12 Yoga Parks, followed by Mathura‑Vrindavan with roughly 8 parks. Ayodhya and Firozabad have 3 Yoga Parks each, while Ghaziabad has 10. The Urban Development Department has instructed District Magistrates, the Directorate of Local Bodies and Municipal Commissioners to make sure these International Yoga Parks have all basic facilities, such as clean drinking water, seating arrangements and spaces suitable for yoga training. ASI waives off monument fees for Yoga Day participation

New Delhi, Jun 21 (UNI) In order to ensure maximum participation of people on International Day of Yoga on June 21, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) under the Union Ministry of Culture has waived off the entry fee at all its centrally protected monuments across the country. While the main event at Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh will be led by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet Ministers will join Yoga enthusiasts at various historical sites where the ASI in collaboration with Union Ministry of Ayush, has planned to host yoga sessions. At least 81 centrally protected monuments have been identified for the session including historical sites such as Purana Qila (Delhi), Gol Gumbaz (Karnataka), Konark Sun Temple (Odisha), Chittorgarh Fort (Rajasthan), Elephanta Caves (Maharashtra) and 76 other historical places under ASI. The celebrations will witness the presence of the Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah at Adalaj Vav, Ahmedabad; Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri at Safdarjung Tomb, Delhi; Union Minister of Commerce and Industries Piyush Goyal at Kanheri Caves, Mumbai. Likewise, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi will join yoga enthusiasts at Group of temples at Pattadakal along with other key dignitaries across different locations. 'These sessions will underscore the importance of holistic health and environmental consciousness deeply rooted in yogic philosophy,' said ASI in a statement here. Welcoming the initiative, Dr (Prof) Daljit Singh, a neurosurgeon and former Head of Department of Neurosurgery at GB Pant Hospital, Delhi said that 'waiving off the entry fees to ASI-protected monuments on International Day of Yoga is an excellent way to encourage more people to connect with the cultural heritage of India while celebrating yoga. 'Monuments and heritage sites are often places of serenity, which can complement the peaceful and meditative nature of yoga,' he added. Aligned with this year's theme of 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'- this grand yoga festival aims to promote the timeless connection between India's cultural heritage and ancient wellness practices.
