India's Covid active cases dip to 5,608; four deaths in past 24 hours
New Delhi, June 20 (UNI) According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India has witnessed a decline in active Covid-19 cases, with a reduction of 368 cases, bringing the total active cases to 5,608 on Friday. In the past 24 hours, the country reported four new fatalities — one each from Delhi, Punjab, Kerala and Maharashtra — raising the total Covid-19 related deaths this year to 120. As in previous cases, the majority of the deceased who died in the past 24 hours had underlying health conditions, with Covid-19 infection limiting their survival. Several states continue to see a decrease in daily infections. Kerala reported decline by 125 cases but continue to have the highest load at 1,184, followed by Gujarat with 912(down by 134 cases), Delhi with 630(2), Karnataka with 398 (68), and Maharashtra with 389(dip by 54 cases). Conversely, there has been a slight uptick in cases from Manipur (16), Rajasthan (26), Uttarakhand (5), and Punjab (7). In the last 24 hours, 1,092 individuals recovered from Covid-19, bringing the total recoveries this year to 18,256. Health authorities have identified two new Omicron sub-lineages — NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 — as the causes of the current surge. Both are mutations of the JN.1 variant. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has clarified that these new strains are not associated with increased disease severity compared to previous Omicron waves. Genome sequencing data indicates that earlier cases were predominantly due to the JN.1.16 sub-variant, while recent cases are largely attributed to recombinant variants such as LF.7 and LP.8.1.2. Experts continue to urge the public to adhere to Covid-appropriate behaviors, including avoiding crowded places and maintaining health precautions, particularly for individuals above 60 or those feeling unwell.

Real Madrid forward Mbappe in hospital
New York, June 19 (UNI) Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe is in hospital with gastroenteritis after missing their Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal. The France captain, 26, missed training on Tuesday with a fever and did not play in Wednesday's 1-1 draw against the Saudi Arabian side. A Real statement on Thursday said Mbappe has "an acute case of gastroenteritis" and was admitted to hospital for "a series of tests". Gastroenteritis is an infection in the gut which can cause vomiting and diarrhoea. Real's next game is against Pachuca on Sunday at 20:00 BST. There is no indication whether Mbappe could be available for the game, according to a BBC news. Mbappe scored 43 goals in 56 games in all competitions for Real in his first season after joining on a free transfer from Paris St-Germain. This is Real's first competition under Xabi Alonso, who replaced Carlo Ancelotti as manager at the end of the La Liga season. Real won the Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Intercontinental Cup in Mbappe's first season in Spanish football. UNI BM

RSS has evolved into a respected global outfit: Maha Guv
Mumbai, June 20 (UNI) Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan said that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which was founded in 1925, has evolved into a respected global organisation, with branches across many countries, according to a statement issued here on Friday. The Governor was speaking on the occasion of a book release ceremony in Raj Bhavan titled 'Why Are We in the RSS...?' written by author, ideologue and RSS pracharak Ramesh Patange. Countering what he termed as the false narrative that the RSS is an upper caste organisation, Governor Radhakrishnan asserted that RSS has always embodied inclusivity, rooted in the core values of Sanatana Dharma — equality, service, and unity. Complimenting Patange for bringing out a book on RSS in the organisation's centenary year, the Governor praised Patange for dispelling through well-researched evidence, historical facts, and reasoned arguments, the politically motivated myth that the RSS is an upper-caste organisation. He further noted that RSS volunteers have consistently risen to serve the nation during times of crisis—whether during earthquakes, floods, droughts, or railway accidents across the country. Reflecting on the organisation's journey, the Governor acknowledged that the RSS has faced numerous challenges over the past 100 years, including two bans — one following the tragic assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Yet, he said, the dedication of thousands of swayamsevaks and pracharaks has ensured that the organisation remains strong and vibrant. He also commended RSS workers for fostering emotional integration between the northeastern states and the rest of the country. The Governor pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, himself a former pracharak, exemplifies the spirit of selfless service inspired by the RSS. He said under the leadership of the Prime Minister, India not only provided free Covid-19 vaccinations to its citizens but also extended support to other nations through vaccine exports. Dr Ashwin Ranjaniker, translator of Patange's original Marathi book 'Aamhi Sanghat Ka Aahot?...', secretary to the Governor Dr. Prashant Narnaware and invitees were present. Canada to adjust counter-tariffs on US steel-aluminium tariffs from July 21
Ottawa, June 20 (UNI) The Canadian federal government will adjust its counter-tariffs on US steel and aluminium products beginning July 21, aligning the measures with progress made in broader trade negotiations, the Finance Ministry said on Thursday. "While the government negotiates a new economic and security partnership with the United States, we will ensure workers and industry are protected against the unjust and unprovoked American tariffs," the ministry said in a statement. Sadanand Gowda slams Karnataka minority quota hike
Bengaluru, June 20 (UNI) Former chief minister and senior BJP leader DV Sadananda Gowda on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Karnataka government's decision to expand minority-based reservations, calling the move unconstitutional and a dangerous example of appeasement politics. Reacting strongly to the cabinet's approval to raise the quota for minorities — including Muslims — in government housing schemes from 10% to 15%, Gowda said the decision violates both the spirit and letter of the Constitution. 'The Constitution is very clear — reservations cannot be granted on the basis of caste or religion. The Supreme Court had made this absolutely clear during the earlier 4% reservation issue. Despite this, the state government is going ahead with policies that go against constitutional norms,' he said. The Karnataka government has projected the hike as part of its broader social-equity initiatives, but Gowda dismissed it as a calculated political manoeuvre aimed at minority appeasement. 'They are trying to portray themselves as champions of equity while actually encouraging religious polarisation for electoral gain,' he said. He accused the ruling Congress of engaging in blatant vote-bank politics and warned that such decisions would set a dangerous precedent. 'They hold the Constitution in their hands and lecture others, but they don't even understand what's written in it,' he remarked, adding that it reflected a fundamental failure of governance. Gowda further alleged that communal incidents under the current regime were not isolated but indicative of a deeper problem. 'Killings based on religious identity are happening, and it is this government that is providing the ideological fuel. This is not governance — this is incitement,' he charged. According to him, the move to raise quotas for minorities also sends out the wrong message. 'They are telling a particular community — do whatever you like, we are here for you, and the government treasury will be used exclusively for your benefit,' he said, terming it 'unfortunate and reckless politics.' Calling it a 'breaking development with far-reaching consequences,' Gowda warned that the public must remain alert to what he described as 'emerging scandals under the guise of welfare.' UNI BDN PRS
