Karnataka minister HK Patil pulls up own government over illegal mining cases
Karnataka Law Minister HK Patil has written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urging him to punish those guilty of illegal mining in the state, alleging that the government has not been honest and committed to ensuring proper punishment for those guilty of "looting the state's wealth".In order to bring the culprits behind illegal mining to justice, Patil also suggested steps that the Siddaramaiah government should take, according to a seven-page letter to the Chief Minister, Patil claimed that only 7.6 per cent of all illegal mining cases have been investigated and that the government has not done enough to punish the culprits and recover the lost wealth. "Between 2007 and 2011, massive treachery took place in Karnataka in the form of illegal mining. Politicians and bureaucrats systematically looted the state's wealth. The government lost Rs 1.5 lakh crore. But in spite of such a large-scale loot, the government has not demonstrated honesty and commitment in ensuring commensurate punishment for the loot and recovery of the state's wealth," Patil said in the said that there is public outrage over illegal mining in the state and the administration's inability to address most of such cases."There is outrage among people about this. A special investigation team (SIT), which is looking into a few cases, has not made progress. These cases are getting buried in government files and administrative delays," he also suggested steps that can be taken to effectively address illegal mining and their investigation:Through the Criminal Law Amendment Ordinance of 1946, a Recovery Commissioner should be immediately appointed within the jurisdiction of the State Government to seize the property of criminals accused of recovery efforts. This Commissioner must be provided with the necessary support and strength. Steps must be taken with firm determination to make recovery to the number of illegal mining cases that have completed investigation and are now in the trial phase in court, there are at least ten times more cases that have not yet undergone investigation. Investigations into such cases are essential. For that purpose, a special investigation team with stronger enforcement authority should be formed, and the police system should be structured accordingly, enabling the punishment of criminals involved in such crimes.A special court must be immediately established to investigate the cases with criminal intent related to illegal Karnataka Law Minister further called for administrators to recognise the seriousness of the matter, saying, "The serious directives already given, and the documentary evidence submitted to the then-Cabinet subcommittee, must be preserved, and a final decision must be made before they disappear for any reason".advertisementThe state minister's scathing letter came more than a month after a CBI court convicted former Karnataka Minister Gali Janardhan Reddy and three others in the Obulapuram illegal mining case. The matter concerned the investigation into the case involving the Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC), owned by OMC case involved allegations of illegal iron ore mining and export in the Bellary region of Karnataka and the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. Investigations revealed that OMC had obtained mining leases under the guise of captive mining but had engaged in unauthorised mining Watch IN THIS STORY#Karnataka

Centre clears compensation plan for Karnataka mango farmers after price crash
In a major relief to mango farmers in Karnataka grappling with falling prices, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday announced that the Central and Karnataka governments will jointly compensate farmers for the price difference in mango decision was taken during a video conference between Chouhan and Karnataka's Agriculture Minister N Chaluvaraya Swamy, with Union Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi also participating in the two governments have agreed to bear the cost of the price gap for up to 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of mangoes - 25 per cent of Karnataka's total estimated production of 10 lakh metric tonnes this season. The initiative is aimed particularly at addressing the drastic price drop in the Totapuri variety, which has left farmers earning significantly below the usual market per the agreement, the financial burden of the compensation will be equally shared by the Centre and the state under an existing central government will be paid the difference between the prevailing market price and the usual rate they typically receive, providing crucial monetary support during a time of relief measure follows a proposal earlier submitted by the Karnataka government to the Centre, highlighting the steady decline in prices of tomatoes and mangoes. However, during the meeting, the Karnataka agriculture minister noted that while tomato prices were low at the time of the proposal, they have now stabilised, and no immediate action is needed in that InTrending Reel

Telangana: Singareni to set up Rs 3,000 cr pumped storage power plant at Medipalli mine
Hyderabad, June 21 (UNI) As part of its business expansion strategy, State-owned Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), which has already established thermal and solar power plants, is now venturing into an innovative new power generation initiative. Based on the directives issued by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, Singareni has decided to set up a pumped storage power plant (PSP) at the site of the closed Medipalli Opencast Mine in Ramagundam-1 area, utilising the existing mine water sump, the Mining company said in a release here on Saturday. Chairman and Managing Director N. Balram said that this is the first of its kind project in Telangana, and expressed confidence that Singareni will successfully implement this pilot initiative. He stated that after completing preliminary studies, SCCL has now entrusted WAPCOS Limited—a government agency—with the task of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) by officially issuing a Letter of Award. He said that the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Energy, Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, had personally visited the Medipalli mine and the proposed site, and the state government has responded positively to the plan. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 3,000 crore. However, the plant is expected to generate a strong financial return for Singareni with a projected lifespan of 40 years at a capacity of 500 MW. Once the DPR is finalised by WAPCOS, tenders for construction are expected to be floated, he said. WAPCOS Limited, entrusted by Singareni, will carry out a comprehensive study for constructing the 500 MW pumped storage project using the Medipalli mine water sump. The DPR will include geological, geotechnical, hydrological, civil design, power generation capacity, mechanical and electrical designs, environmental and safety aspects. It will also provide estimates of construction time, total costs, and the market potential for the power produced by the plant. This kind of plant operates similarly to a hydroelectric project. In conventional hydro projects, electricity is generated using the natural flow of water turning turbines. In contrast, pumped storage plants work by pumping water to a higher elevation using solar power during the day, and releasing it through turbines at night to generate electricity. Currently, the Medipalli Opencast mine has a large water sump about 157 meters deep, which holds a substantial volume of water year-round. The proposed project will include the construction of another surface reservoir of similar capacity. During the day, water from the mine sump will be pumped into this surface reservoir using solar energy. At night, the water will be released back down through pipes, spinning turbines to generate power. Because water is pumped up and then used again for generation, this method is called a Pumped Storage Project (PSP). Due to the availability of both the deep water sump and suitable surface land for a reservoir at the Medipalli mine, SCCL has identified it as the optimal site for this project. The surface reservoir is expected to be around 2,350 meters in length and 23 meters in depth, with a total water storage capacity of 9.64 million cubic meters. Out of this, about 8 million cubic meters will be used for power generation through pumping. UNI KNR RN
