Jamie Carragher's Liverpool theory with Arne Slot unable to copy Jurgen Klopp
Liverpool have come flying out of the blocks in this summer's transfer window, but Jamie Carragher is not convinced Arne Slot will have the same power as Jurgen Klopp
Despite Liverpool's busy start to the transfer window, Jamie Carragher does not believe Arne Slot will have the same influence on outgoings and incomings as Jurgen Klopp. After winning the Premier League, the Reds are heavily backing Slot in the transfer window.
They have already snapped up Jeremie Frimpong and are still chasing down lucrative deals for Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez from Bayer Leverkusen and Bournemouth. Despite being constrained to the sole acquisition of Federico Chiesa in his first transfer windows as Liverpool boss, the Dutchman appears to be fully supported in the current market.
However, with the likes of Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz being linked to Bayern Munich and Barcelona, the possibility of Liverpool selling players also cannot be overlooked either. If Slot decided he wanted to keep players like the aforementioned duo, then Carragher does not believe the ex-Feyenoord manager would be able to stop them, if the club decided they had to go to raise money.
On 'The Overlap', Carragher painted a picture of the behind-the-scenes dynamics, saying: "We know a little bit of what's gone on behind the scenes. They've brought all the old transfer people back if you like. They had a falling out with Klopp, but they're back now running the club.
"The great thing they built with Klopp, this great team and then they moved away as Klopp got more power. I think players who have been legends for the club and won the biggest trophies, were given contracts and were allowed to stay at Liverpool longer, too long basically.
"That's why Liverpool fell off for a little bit and then came back. I think the way they want to run Liverpool is that they are not going to sell their absolute best players.
"But a Diaz or a Gakpo, who are good players, they wouldn't want to sell them, but if someone made them an offer, that they think 'That's more than what we think (they are worth)' I think that's the way it will be run now, it will be like 'Oh no, he's gone and we back ourselves to go again'.
"That's what I mean in terms of those getting linked. I'm like 'No you wouldn't want to sell those' but they are probably thinking, 'If you offer us enough money we will do it'. I think the club will be like that now."
Carragher's comments come as Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a record-breaking transfer deal for Wirtz, with a £109million offer already rejected by Leverkusen. The Bundesliga club, who are now managed by ex-Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, are understood to be demanding £125m to part with the German international.
If Liverpool meet that fee, it would not only shatter the club's transfer record, it would also break the Premier League record, which is currently held by Chelsea, when they forked out £115m to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton & Hove Albion.
But while Liverpool are willing to back their manager, the Dutchman's influence will only go so far, in Carragher's eyes. The ex-Liverpool defender added: "Arne Slot is called the head coach.
"He's the first head coach in Liverpool history. Even though he has won the league in his first season, I don't think they're going to allow what happened with Jurgen Klopp.
"He was making these bigger decisions and he was a god and everyone loves him. I think there could be a few surprises who may go if Liverpool get offered the right money."

New Viktor Gyokeres claim made as fresh Marcus Rashford setback comes to light
Manchester United are expected to be active in the transfer market after a poor season but they are still yet to build on the capture of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha Manchester United are working hard behind the scenes to try and get more signings over the line as they bid to shake up Ruben Amorim 's playing squad ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. The Red Devils endured their worst ever season in the Premier League last year and have already snapped up Matheus Cunha from Wolves in a bid to refresh their frontline, with Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo next in their sights. Plenty more incomings and outgoings are expected at United in the coming weeks and months with things finally starting to heat up in the transfer market. And with Amorim keen to get fresh faces in the door before the club head off on their pre-season tour of the United States next month, the pressure is on United's top brass to deliver. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest transfer news from in and around Old Trafford... New Rashford setback Manchester United are said to have 'offered' Real Madrid the chance to sign Marcus Rashford for £40million this summer - but the Spanish giants are unlikely to take them up on the offer. Rashford is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford and wanted to seal a dream move to Barcelona. But with the Spanish champions advancing in their pursuit of Nico Williams, a move to the Nou Camp would appear to be off the cards. According to DefensaCentral, United have already offered Real the chance to step in and take Rashford to Spain amid their search for a striker. The report notes, though, that Real have already concluded that he is not the right profile for what they are seeking. Gyokeres latest Viktor Gyokeres' agent is reportedly willing to leak voice notes confirming that the club's former sporting director, Hugo Viana, would sell his client for less than his release clause. Arsenal and Manchester United have been heavily linked with the striker, whose preferred destination is believed to be north London. His future is unclear, though, amid claims Arsenal have reached an agreement on personal terms with Benjamin Sesko. Gyokeres seems destined to leave Sporting Lisbon regardless and according to Record, the player's agent, Hasan Çetinkaya, has 'evidence' that Viana agreed Gyokeres could be sold for €60m plus €10m in add-ons (£51m plus £8.5m) in a meeting back in September. Amorim wants signings Ruben Amorim is 'growing impatient' for new signings ahead of the club's pre-season tour of the Untied States with just Matheus Cunha through the door. The Red Devils are working to sign Bryan Mbeumo and also want a new striker with Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike and Viktor Gyokeres on their wishlist. But Amorim wants more progress to be made on the transfer front before his team jet out Stateside to compete in the Premier League Summer Series. Gareth Bale consortium in bid to buy Cardiff
Gareth Bale is part of a United States investment group wanting to buy League One club Cardiff, according to reports. The 35-year-old former Real Madrid and Wales forward was understood to be part of a consortium that had conversations regarding a takeover of Plymouth earlier this week, along with several other clubs, but it appears they have now turned their attention to south Wales. The Athletic reports that the consortium sent current Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan a letter of intent last month, which included financial figures, but it was rejected. Bale is seeking to be the latest big sporting name to be associated with an EFL club. His former Real team-mate Luka Modric became an investor in and co-owner of Championship side Swansea in April, while ex-NFL quarterback Tom Brady has a minority stake in Birmingham. Cardiff declined to comment on Friday night. Bale retired from football in January 2023 at the age of 33. He won five Champions League titles with Real and is the men's all-time record goalscorer for Wales with 41 in 111 caps. He was linked with an emotional move to Cardiff, his hometown club, after leaving Madrid in 2022 but instead joined MLS side LAFC. Bale featured for Wales at the 2022 World Cup – their first appearance at the global finals since 1958 – and at the Euros in 2016 and 2020. Cardiff were relegated to League One last season and appointed Brian Barry-Murphy as their new manager this week.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca refused to be drawn on Nicolas Jackson's red card
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca had 'nothing to say' about Nicolas Jackson's red card just four minutes after arriving as a substitute in a second-half collapse which saw them lose 3-1 to Flamengo at the Club World Cup. Jackson, who was sent off against Newcastle in their third-last Premier League match, raked his studs down the shin of Lucas Ayrton and was immediately dismissed – after which Wallace Yan scored the Brazil side's third. When Maresca was asked about Jackson's challenge and his recent indiscipline he told DAZN: 'It was a red card, so nothing to say.' 68' You can't script Jackson subbed on… and sent off 4 minutes later 🟥😱 Watch the @FIFACWC | June 14 – July 13 | Every Game | Free | | #FIFACWC #TakeItToTheWorld #FLACHE — DAZN Football (@DAZNFootball) June 20, 2025 However, Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella admitted it was something the 24-year-old had to improve. 'He is young player, he has a lot of quality, he maybe needs to improve this a little bit. We are here to improve, we are not perfect so it is part of the game,' he said. Maresca put the damaging defeat down to 'trying something new' for next season. The Blues were leading through Pedro Neto's 13th-minute strike but after second-half goals from Bruno Henrique and Danilo in quick succession Jackson saw red. 'It completely changed the game. Unfortunately we conceded two goals in a short moment and then the red card and then I think it is complicated to get back into the game,' the Chelsea boss added. 65' ABSOLUTE SCENES: Danilo scores and @Flamengo_en complete their comeback under just 3 minutes 😱 Watch the @FIFACWC | June 14 – July 13 | Every Game | Free | | #FIFACWC #TakeItToTheWorld #FLACHE — DAZN Football (@DAZNFootball) June 20, 2025 'We tried – but congratulations to them.
