Coutinho, who also spent last season on loan at Qatari side Al-Duhail, has not played for Villa since the start of the 2023/24 campaign — exactly 654 days ago.
But he still has a year remaining on his lucrative £125,000-a-week contract, which Coutinho signed in 2022 after making his shock loan from Barcelona permanent for £17million.
And the Athletic claims Villa chiefs have now made it a priority to get his high wages off their books ahead of another summer splurge.
Coutinho hit the ground running when he moved to Villa Park on loan in January 2022, scoring five goals in 19 games under Steven Gerard.

But standards slipped after his move became permanent, with the ex-Liverpool and Bayern Munich star netting just once in the following 24 outings.
And Coutinho now looks set to become a free agent if Villa can agree a deal to terminate his contract this month.
He's not the only potential outgoing as Unai Emery's men look to balance the books.
Emi Martinez, Lucas Digne and Leon Bailey could be sold for the right price, with Emi Buendia, Leander Dendocker, Enzo Barrenechea and Samuel Iling-Junior up for grabs.

There is also interest in Ollie Watkins, Jacob Ramsey and Morgan Rogers, but Villa are desperate to keep all three.

'Every game a joy' - but should Gundogan stay at new-look Man City?

"Every game is a joy."The words of Ilkay Gundogan about playing under Pep Guardiola - a man whom he has spent eight years working under having been the Spaniard's first signing as Manchester City boss in captaining City to the Treble in 2023, Gundogan spent 12 months at Barcelona only to return on an initial one-year deal last summer, with the option of a further 12 Sunday night, he scored twice as City thrashed UAE side Al Ain 6-0 to progress to the last 16 of the Club World Cup and said afterwards: "I have one more year left on my contract and I'm very happy here."Gundogan's return to City 12 months ago was hailed by fans on this page as the "best signing of the window across the Premier League" and "one of City's greatest transfer moments".However, the past season has not been easy. Guardiola endured a first trophyless season since his opening campaign in Manchester in 2016-17, with City only securing Champions League final qualification on the final day. In that earlier post, fans had imagined Gundogan would "likely be a bit-part player" who provided "squad depth" but the former Germany midfielder still made 50 appearances in all competitions - the second-most of the whole City squad."It's a big privilege. I mean, otherwise I would have not joined again," the 34-year-old said on his relationship with Guardiola."Otherwise I would have not spent so many years with him at this club. I think it's just something that he has - to make players feel they have to compete on the highest level. "Every training session, every game, is just a joy. That's why he's the best." City's accelerated rebuild is well underway, with £108m already spent this summer to add to the £180m splashed in hinted at departures after Monday's match, saying: "We have - right now - a long squad, too many players, so we cannot go with 26 or 27 players this season." Kevin de Bruyne has already joined Napoli, Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker look certain to depart, while Ederson's future is there will still be continuity from the great City teams of recent years within the squad. This includes Rodri on his return return from injury, John Stones, Ruben Dias and Bernado Silva, who will stay and captain the side next do you think about Gundogan's future?Should he get a new deal and if so, what role ought he to play at Etihad Stadium?Let us know here.

Klopp's 'incredible player' leaves Liverpool to take summer departures to 12

Liverpool have seen something of an exodus this season with a 12th player now joining the list of stars to head through the exit door so far in this transfer window Liverpool's summer departures are set to be taken up to 12, with Nat Phillips closing in on a move to West Brom. Phillips broke through from the Reds' academy to become a key man in the 2020/2021 campaign. His performances with Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all sidelined helped Liverpool secure qualification to the Champions League. They would then reach the final of that competition a year later. ‌ Despite those displays, Phillips has struggled for gametime at the Premier League champions ever since. The centre-back was instead sent out on loan to Stuttgart, Bournemouth, Celtic, Cardiff City and Derby County. ‌ His final appearance for Liverpool came against Wolverhampton Wanderers way back in January 2023. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhín Kelleher, Jakub Ojrzyński, Dominic Corness, Reece Trueman, Lee Jonas, Louis Enahoro-Marcus, Harry Evers, Jacob Poytress, Harvey Davies and Vitezslav Jaros have all already departed Anfield this summer. Phillips is now set to become the latest man to join that exodus after finally securing a permanent move away. That deal for him to move to the Hawthorns is gathering pace. According to The Athletic, Phillips is undergoing a medical on Monday with the Baggies. He has one year remaining on his contract with the Reds and had attracted interest from several Championship clubs. But it is the Midlands side who have won the race, to leave new boss Ryan Mason delighted. It is expected that Phillips will join his new club in time to link up with the Baggies for the start of pre-season later this week. The 28-year-old made 33 appearances for Derby as they secured survival in the second tier. Meanwhile, West Brom endured a disappointing season to only finish ninth, four points adrift of a play-off place. ‌ Phillps' move ends a mixed time on Merseyside for the centre-back. He made his debut against Everton in the FA Cup in January 2020, and received major praise from Klopp for his role in securing Champions League qualification a year later. 'I messaged Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips because we wouldn't be there without them," Klopp told Sky Sports News in 2022. 'I remember the final game of last season and they left the pitch with a bandage around the head, cuts on their faces, and that was really a symbol for the whole period. "We went through on one leg, with one eye… it was incredible. It was such a tough season. Hopefully nobody forgot how hard we fought to get here. We had no centre-halves, had to play midfielders in the last line, then had to use other players in midfield and nothing worked really. 'In the end, we played with two incredible players – Rhys and Nat – but we couldn't use them earlier because they needed time to adapt. So, yes, there was a bit of a point to prove and I'm really happy that the boys did that.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Arsenal set price for AC Milan to sign Oleksandr Zinchenko

Arsenal would be prepared to sell Oleksandr Zinchenko to AC Milan should they receive an offer of £17million for the full-back this summer, according to reports in Italy. Zinchenko has enjoyed three seasons with the Gunners having followed Mikel Arteta from Manchester City to the Emirates in a deal worth around £30m back in 2022. Though the 28-year-old has failed to win any silverware in that time, he has proven to be an influential member of the dressing room and his versatility has been invaluable for Arteta. But the meteoric rise of Myles Lewis-Skelly and Riccardo Calafiori's arrival from Bologna have combined to block Zinchenko's path to Arteta's starting XI. Zinchenko's current contract is due to expire in 2026, meaning Arsenal must decide whether to cash in on the Ukrainian now or risk losing him on a free transfer in 12 months' time. AC Milan have been alerted to a potential deal, with the club's sporting director Igli Tare in contact with intermediaries managing Zinchenko's possible departure from north London. According to Corriere dello Sport, Milan – who are looking to find a replacement for the Al-Hilal-bound Theo Hernandez – can close a deal for Zinchenko with a bid in the region of £17m. The report claims Zinchenko's wage demands are the 'only obstacle' blocking the Ukraine international's path to the San Siro. Zinchenko is said to 'open' to prospect of joining the Rossoneri, with the former Manchester City man keen to secure regular playing time ahead of the new season. The Serie A giants are also looking at Club Brugge's Maxim De Cuyper as a potential solution at left-back should they fail in pursuit of Zinchenko. Back in March, Zinchenko – who has also attracted interest from Borussia Dortmund – admitted he was unsure what lay ahead for his future after dropping down the pecking order at Arsenal. 'I don't know yet to be honest,' he said at the time. 'If I knew, I could tell you. It's still a long way to go until the end of the season. 'I think we are at the stage and the most interesting period of the season, where every single game is a final and you never know what is going to happen in football.' More Trending Despite his somewhat peripheral role, Zinchenko was keen to stress that he remained 'so happy' at Arsenal and intent on 'making an impact' at every possible opportunity. 'Honestly, I am so happy to be part of this amazing club and team. It is really a joy to be close to these guys,' he added. 'Whenever the team and head coach needs me, I am there. In any position they need me, I am there to help. 'Even if I will be in the stands, I will try to make an impact as much as I can, to push the others, just to hug someone, whatever! It is really a joy to be here.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
