Klopp's 'incredible player' leaves Liverpool to take summer departures to 12

Daily Mirror5 hours ago

Liverpool have seen something of an exodus this season with a 12th player now joining the list of stars to head through the exit door so far in this transfer window
Liverpool's summer departures are set to be taken up to 12, with Nat Phillips closing in on a move to West Brom. Phillips broke through from the Reds' academy to become a key man in the 2020/2021 campaign.
His performances with Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all sidelined helped Liverpool secure qualification to the Champions League. They would then reach the final of that competition a year later.

Despite those displays, Phillips has struggled for gametime at the Premier League champions ever since. The centre-back was instead sent out on loan to Stuttgart, Bournemouth, Celtic, Cardiff City and Derby County.

His final appearance for Liverpool came against Wolverhampton Wanderers way back in January 2023. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhín Kelleher, Jakub Ojrzyński, Dominic Corness, Reece Trueman, Lee Jonas, Louis Enahoro-Marcus, Harry Evers, Jacob Poytress, Harvey Davies and Vitezslav Jaros have all already departed Anfield this summer.
Phillips is now set to become the latest man to join that exodus after finally securing a permanent move away. That deal for him to move to the Hawthorns is gathering pace.
According to The Athletic, Phillips is undergoing a medical on Monday with the Baggies. He has one year remaining on his contract with the Reds and had attracted interest from several Championship clubs.
But it is the Midlands side who have won the race, to leave new boss Ryan Mason delighted. It is expected that Phillips will join his new club in time to link up with the Baggies for the start of pre-season later this week.
The 28-year-old made 33 appearances for Derby as they secured survival in the second tier. Meanwhile, West Brom endured a disappointing season to only finish ninth, four points adrift of a play-off place.

Phillps' move ends a mixed time on Merseyside for the centre-back. He made his debut against Everton in the FA Cup in January 2020, and received major praise from Klopp for his role in securing Champions League qualification a year later.
'I messaged Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips because we wouldn't be there without them," Klopp told Sky Sports News in 2022. 'I remember the final game of last season and they left the pitch with a bandage around the head, cuts on their faces, and that was really a symbol for the whole period.
"We went through on one leg, with one eye… it was incredible. It was such a tough season. Hopefully nobody forgot how hard we fought to get here. We had no centre-halves, had to play midfielders in the last line, then had to use other players in midfield and nothing worked really.
'In the end, we played with two incredible players – Rhys and Nat – but we couldn't use them earlier because they needed time to adapt. So, yes, there was a bit of a point to prove and I'm really happy that the boys did that.'

The Nicolas Kuhn transfer fee Celtic should jump at as RB Leipzig move could trigger signing splurge

Kuhn is believed to have suitors down south and in the Bundesliga RB Leipzig's reported £15million bid for Nicolas Kuhn is potentially a sign that the winger isn't completely happy at Celtic. That's the view of Record Sport's very own Scott McDermott, who reckons that the Bundesliga side's reported attempts to step up their interest in the 25-year-old aren't without any interference from the other side. ‌ Despite his form dipping in the second half of last season, Kuhn enjoyed a productive campaign in Glasgow's east end, registering 21 goals and 15 assists in 51 matches in all competitions. ‌ The former Bayern Munich kid is said to be a key target for incoming new Leipzig head coach Ola Werner while Premier League side Newcastle have also reportedly been keeping tabs on the wide man for quite some time. And our man McDermott hints that Kuhn's demeanour in the wake of Celtic's Premiership triumph last season could suggest that he is keen to move on from Brendan Rodgers' side this summer. Speaking on Monday's Hotline Live, he said: "For Celtic, it definitely is. I have said on here before that for £15million, you absolutely bite the hand off for it. "That's taking nothing away from Kuhn, who is a terrific player and has had a brilliant season but for that kind of money, you need to bite the hand on it. "I just wonder, and this is not any inside info, that Kuhn maybe isn't quite 100 per cent happy at Celtic. "I don't think he is angling for a move but I just don't think there is this speculation unless the player has intimated that he might be keen on a move. ‌ "We interviewed him at Tannadice when Celtic clinched the title. He came in and he was happy to win the league but he was a bit grumpy as well about the criticism he had got. "He felt that he needed to prove people wrong and that it was unfair when he got a wee bit of flak when he hit that dip. ‌ "Maybe he was right but he struck me as a guy who wasn't 100 per cent happy at Celtic. "It's interesting that several clubs have now been mentioned. "He has spoken about his determination to play for Germany and maybe he feels that going back to the Bundesliga or going to the Premier League will boost his chances of playing for the national team, despite what he has done for Celtic. "You are just getting that feeling as the summer goes on that Kuhn might be leaving and that certainly would explain why Celtic are keen to get the boy (Benjamin) Nygren in who plays in a similar position. "If Kuhn goes they might need to go back for another winger, certainly if they are getting £15million into the transfer coffers."

Mullin, a central figure in Wrexham's rise under co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has scored 110 goals in 172 games since arriving from Cambridge nearly four years ago. The 30-year-old even had a non-speaking cameo role in Reynolds' Deadpool & Wolverine as 'Welshpool', a Welsh version of Deadpool. We can confirm striker Paul Mullin will join Wigan Athletic on loan for the 2025/26 season All the best for the season, Mulls 🤝 🔴⚪ #WxmAFC — Wrexham AFC (@Wrexham_AFC) June 23, 2025 Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson told the club website: 'I'd like to wish Paul all the best for his loan move. 'It's a good opportunity for him to get back to playing regular first-team football and I'm sure he's going to be a great signing for Wigan Athletic.' Mullin's game-time at Wrexham was limited following surgery on a long-standing back issue last summer. He started just nine league games last season and made a further 17 appearances off the bench as Wrexham won a third successive promotion to play Championship football next season. Mullin told Wigan's website: 'I'm excited for the next part of my story. 'As a player, I give absolutely everything and work as hard as I can.'
