
Advanced ultrasound workshop for pulmonologists held in Coimbatore
The Department of Interventional Pulmonology at G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial (GKNM) Hospital conducted the second edition of the 'Advanced Ultrasound Workshop' on Saturday(June 14, 2025), according to a release from the hospital.
Inaugurated by CEO Dr. Raghupathy Veluswamy and Dr. Nandagopal Velayuthaswamy of the Coimbatore Respiratory Society, the workshop brought together pulmonologists from across the country to enhance their skills in thoracic ultrasonography.
The hands-on training focused on point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) applications, including pleural effusion quantification, lung sliding for pneumothorax, identification of B-lines in interstitial syndromes, and dynamic air bronchograms in lung consolidation. Sessions also included ultrasound-guided thoracentesis and interpretation of M-mode and Doppler imaging.
A keynote address on 'Artificial Intelligence in Lung Ultrasound' was delivered by Dr. Tudor Toma from the UK, who spoke on the role of AI in enhancing image interpretation and supporting clinical decisions. The hospital plans to make it an annual programme and establish a Centre of Excellence for Thoracic Ultrasound, the release added.

Telemedicine service for cancer patients of 10 dists
Lucknow: With Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute & Hospital set to launch a telemedicine service, cancer patients from 10 districts of Uttar Pradesh will no longer need to travel to the state capital for expert consultation. Once operational, the facility will allow suspected cancer patients to consult oncologists via video calls from their home districts. Based on the symptoms, doctors at the institute will recommend necessary tests, while local healthcare providers will share the reports through WhatsApp or email. Further treatment decisions, including referrals to the institute, will be made only when necessary. The telemedicine project is in its final phase. Most of the required equipment was already procured, and installation is underway at hospitals and medical colleges in 10 districts, including Basti, Ayodhya, and Gonda. The full setup is expected to be completed within a month. Patients who are referred to the institute for treatment will later be asked to return to their district hospitals for follow-up consultations, which will also be conducted via telemedicine. A dedicated panel of cancer specialists will provide continuous support and guidance under this system. Prof MLB Bhatt, director of the institute, said that the recruitment of 96 new doctors is nearing completion. "This will help improve patient care, reduce waiting time, and support the opening of new departments. It will also enhance the institute's upcoming telemedicine services," he added.
