The Department of Interventional Pulmonology at G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial (GKNM) Hospital conducted the second edition of the 'Advanced Ultrasound Workshop' on Saturday(June 14, 2025), according to a release from the hospital.
Inaugurated by CEO Dr. Raghupathy Veluswamy and Dr. Nandagopal Velayuthaswamy of the Coimbatore Respiratory Society, the workshop brought together pulmonologists from across the country to enhance their skills in thoracic ultrasonography.
The hands-on training focused on point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) applications, including pleural effusion quantification, lung sliding for pneumothorax, identification of B-lines in interstitial syndromes, and dynamic air bronchograms in lung consolidation. Sessions also included ultrasound-guided thoracentesis and interpretation of M-mode and Doppler imaging.
A keynote address on 'Artificial Intelligence in Lung Ultrasound' was delivered by Dr. Tudor Toma from the UK, who spoke on the role of AI in enhancing image interpretation and supporting clinical decisions. The hospital plans to make it an annual programme and establish a Centre of Excellence for Thoracic Ultrasound, the release added.
