Bahrain Joins Urgent Arab League Meeting in Istanbul to Discuss Regional Escalation

Bahrain took part in an emergency meeting of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, held in Istanbul to address the growing tensions in the region and the military escalation between Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Kingdom was represented by His Excellency Khalid Yousif Al Jalahma, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs. The meeting was convened at the request of Iraq and brought together Arab foreign ministers and the Secretary-General of the Arab League. At the conclusion of the session, a joint statement was issued stressing the urgent need to intensify regional and international efforts to de-escalate the conflict and push for a full ceasefire. The statement also called for a return to negotiations to reach a new agreement on Iran's nuclear program and to support all diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring calm. The ministers emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy—guided by international law and the United Nations Charter—remain the only effective path to resolving the region's crises. The statement rejected military solutions as a means to end the current conflict. The Arab League also reaffirmed the importance of protecting the freedom of navigation in international waterways, warning against the global economic impact of prolonged conflict, especially on energy supply routes. Additionally, the ministers highlighted the need to refrain from targeting nuclear facilities under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency, in line with relevant IAEA and UN Security Council resolutions.

Iranian foreign minister says Israel attack ‘betrayal' of diplomacy with US

Iran's foreign minister yesterday condemned the Israeli attacks against the Islamic republic as a 'betrayal' of diplomatic efforts with the US, saying Tehran and Washington had been due to craft a 'promising agreement' on the Iranian nuclear programme. 'We were attacked in the midst of an ongoing diplomatic process,' Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva ahead of a crunch meeting with European foreign ministers. Araghchi, making his first trip abroad since the strikes began, denounced Israel's attack as an 'outrageous act of aggression'. US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff had planned to meet Araghchi in Oman on June 15 but the meeting was cancelled after Israel began the strikes days before. 'We were supposed to meet with the Americans on 15 June to craft a very promising agreement for peaceful resolution of the issues fabricated over our peaceful nuclear programme,' said Araghchi. 'It was a betrayal of diplomacy and unprecedented blow to the foundations of international law,' he said. Israel began its campaign yesterday saying the operation was aimed at halting Tehran from obtaining an atomic bomb, an ambition Iran denies having. Araghchi described the attacks by Israel as an 'unjust war imposed on my people' that had killed 'hundreds'. Pointing to the risk of radiation after strikes on atomic plants, he said: 'Attacks on nuclear facilities are grave war crimes.'
