Former All-Pro WR says Bills' Stevie Johnson had the best footwork he's ever seen
Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson may not have been a nationally-recognized household name, having played for underachieving Bills teams and receiving zero Pro Bowl selections, but those who watched him play on a regular basis knew just how good he was.
On a recent episode of the Green Light podcast hosted by Chris Long, former NFL All-Pro wide receiver Chad Ochocinco gave Johnson a shout out, reminding people of the perhaps-forgotten playmaker of the early 2010s.
"The greatest footwork," Ochocinco said. "I've never seen anything like Stevie Johnson... still to this day. He does AND1 [basketball] moves on the field and it works every time."
That's quite the praise from Ochocinco, who was a three-time First-Team All-Pro receiver during his time with the Cincinnati Bengals, and even led the NFL in receiving yards in 2006.
Although Stevie didn't accumulate the accolades like Ochocinco, he did put up impressive numbers in an otherwise underwhelming era of Bills football. In 2011, he became the first Bills player in history to record back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, and the following year he became the first player in the team's history to do it in three straight seasons.
He became one of the best steals in Bills draft history after being selected in the seventh round in 2008 out of Kentucky. In team history, he ranks in the top ten in all major receiving categories, including receptions (9th), receiving yards (10th), receiving touchdowns (8th), and receiving yards per game (9th). He accomplished all that despite playing only three full 16-game seasons.
Not only did he put up numbers in his prime, but he made it look good, too. Time and time again he displayed masterful route-running technique, specifically in his release package. Like Ochocinco said, it was like he was playing basketball on the gridiron.
Planting the outside foot in the turf and cutting the face of his defender was reminiscent of an Allen Iverson crossover on the hardwood.
He proved his capabilities countless times over his impressive three-year stretch (2010-2012), but never more so than when he went up against Hall of Fame cornerback Darrell Revis while facing the New York Jets. Revis is one of the best corners to ever do it, and Johnson was one of the few that was able to still do his thing when lined up against him.
The old Revis-Johnson rivalry was recently brought up on X, as their incredible matchups are still being talked about nearly 15 years later.
With the numbers Johnson put up, the effective route-running that he put on film, and the fact that he could go toe-to-toe with the era's best corner, it's no wonder Ochocinco hasn't forgotten about him.

Not everyone is so high on the Bills' offense, though. Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine broke down a best- and worst-case scenario for the offense next season. In the worst-case scenario, Ballentine described James Cook's contract status as a way to "water down" the offense. "James Cook had nearly 400 more scrimmage yards than any other player on the offense," Ballentine wrote. "His emergence as a dual-threat running back has been one of the reasons Brandon Beane deserves credit for putting together a supporting cast that works around Allen." Advertisement The analyst later explained why not having Cook in the offense could force the Bills to be one-dimensional and rely on Josh Allen even more. As a contributor to Buffalo's offense, there's an argument to be made that Cook is the group's best player outside of Allen. He led the league in rushing touchdowns last season and has recorded back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. He has pushed for a new contract worth over $15 million annually. With just under $5 million in cap space, Buffalo isn't in a position to give him that kind of money. While Cook did arrive for mandatory minicamp, there's no guarantee that he will show up for training camp in a month. If he chooses to sit out, it will only draw attention to the drama of his contract situation. Advertisement According to Ballentine, that is a worst-case scenario moving forward. Last season proved that Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen doesn't need a No. 1 receiver to be successful and lead his team to a deep playoff run. Advertisement Allen won MVP and led an offense that averaged 30.9 points per game, with a 13-3 record (sat out Week 18). This body of work suggests that the receiver room is set. But with Mack Hollins and Amari Cooper leaving, and Joshua Palmer, Elijah Moore and Laviska Shenault Jr. coming in, the Bills' weapons appear to be at least as good on paper as last season. Yet, the narrative that Allen needs more help continues to be pushed, and Bleacher Report is the latest publication to run with it, only to contradict itself. Bleacher Report lists receiver as Buffalo's biggest need, but then proceeds to say: "Josh Allen has proved he doesn't need an elite supporting cast to create an elite offense. The Bills were second in EPA per play despite Khalil Shakir leading all receivers with 821 yards. The Bills' group of playmakers was not elite, but it did work well together. Advertisement "Dalton Kincaid, Shakir and Keon Coleman are all still early in their NFL careers. If each of them takes the next step and becomes an even more reliable target for Allen, then the team should be able to make a run at being the top offense in the league in every category." The Bills "need" a receiver, but if everyone improves, that could be a top unit? With Coleman entering Year 2 and Kincaid not dealing with a knee injury that had plagued him, both should see improvements in 2025. Additionally, Palmer can be seen as an upgrade over Cooper, at the very least, and possibly Hollins. Advertisement Then we have Curtis Samuel and Khalil Shakir, who round out the offense. If all take even a slight step forward, as Bleacher Report suggests, the unit could be one of the best in the league. And that's without another receiver being signed.
