Derrick Brown named Panthers' 'make-or-break' player for 2025 season The hopes for this year's Carolina Panthers might hinge on a big return. Pro Football Focus contributor Dalton Wasserman recently named each NFL team's "make-or-break" player for the upcoming campaign. To qualify as such, a player would have to have the power to single-handedly make or break the success of his team in 2025. Wasserman tabs defensive lineman Derrick Brown, who was one-and-done in 2024, for the Panthers: Carolina's defense was futile last season in many facets, but the unit played at a historically poor level against the run. Part of that stemmed from star defensive tackle Derrick Brown suffering a season-ending injury in Week 1. Brown placed second among all interior defenders in 2023 with an elite 90.0 PFF run-defense grade. His presence in the middle makes the entire unit better. The Panthers acquired several pieces on the defensive line to improve their run defense, but Brown's return to his 2023 form would make the biggest impact. Along with that 90.0 run-defense grade, Brown amassed a whopping 103 tackles—an NFL single-season record for a defensive lineman. Those results, which also included 2.0 sacks and an interception, help send the former first-round pick to his first career Pro Bowl. This past year, however, wasn't as kind to Brown—who missed 16 of Carolina's 17 games after sustaining a season-ending knee injury in their opener. The Panthers went on to allow the most points ever as well as a league-worst 179.8 rushing yards per game. Brown, who has yet to fully participate in offseason workouts, was asked when he hopes to get back on the practice field. "Hopefully, very close," he replied. "I expect to be out there in training camp. Load management, and hopefully in the next few weeks, I get cleared. So that's the goal and then at that point, it's just getting back in football shape and being able to go out there and play with the team." Panthers veterans are set to report to training camp on Tuesday, July 22. So hopefully for Carolina and their defense, their 6-foot-5, 320-pound wrecking ball is back in working order by then. His most notable performance came in an AFC Wild Card Game against the Jaguars, where he picked off Trevor Lawrence three times in the first half. The Eagles are no strangers to Samuel's legacy. His father, Asante Samuel Sr., spent four years in Philadelphia from 2008 to 2011, earning three Pro Bowl selections and an All-Pro nod. As it currently stands, the Eagles have Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, Kelee Ringo, Adoree Jackson, Eli Ricks, Mac McWilliams, and Parry Nickerson on their roster at cornerback. A five-time Pro Bowl selection during an 11-year NFL career with the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens, Mosley announced Thursday, his 33rd birthday, that he's retiring. Talks of a possible Baltimore reunion Mosley was released by the Jets in March after playing in just four games last season because of a toe injury and later a herniated disk in his neck. A source told WJZ there was mutual interest in a Baltimore reunion, hoping to chase a championship this upcoming season, but Mosley couldn't get cleared with his neck injury. I'm told C.J. Former NFL star Adrian Peterson involved in physical altercation during poker game, video shows
Former NFL running back Adrian Peterson appeared to get involved in a physical altercation with a man during a recent poker game. TMZ Sports obtained video of the incident at a May poker event in Houston. At one point, Peterson and another poker player reportedly had a disagreement over playing cards. The situation appeared to escalate quickly with video showing Peterson taking multiple punches near his face. The video lasted for roughly 37 seconds but did not appear to show the fight in its entirety. The former Minnesota Vikings star and the unidentified man both sustained injuries to the face, according to TMZ. Peterson later said he sustained his injury when he fell into a chair. Peterson did acknowledge he had consumed alcohol leading up to the altercation, although he clarified that alcohol was not responsible for the fight. The 40-year-old Texas native compared the incident to "a brother situation." "Me and the guy, we're cool. We've known each other. It was literally like a brother situation," Peterson said. "We agreed to disagree, we had our words and we threw blows — and that was it." The seven-time Pro Bowler added he "felt really bad" about what happened. He also noted that he and the other man involved in the fight were later able to reach an understanding. No one was arrested or charged, and police did not respond. In April, Peterson was arrested on a DWI charge after he attended an NFL Draft party in Minnesota. The Vikings drafted Peterson in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He spent the first decade of his pro career in Minneapolis. Peterson was named the NFL MVP in 2012 and left the Vikings after the 2016 season. He joins the Raiders as a solid number three tight end option behind Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer. He's a solid 6-4, 260 pounds with some decent hands but even better blocking and special teams abilities. Who wore it best: WR Jerry Rice The GOAT joined the Raiders in 2001 at the age of 39. In his second season with the team, at the age of 40, he put up over 1200 yards receiving (1211), made his 13th career Pro Bowl and the Raiders were in the Super Bowl. In 54 games over four seasons in Oakland, Rice put up 243 catches for 3286 yards and 18 touchdowns. Honorable Mention: TE Zach Miller Miller was a second round pick by the Raiders in the 2007 NFL Draft. He played four seasons for the Raiders, making one Pro Bowl. He may have had more success except he joined the Raiders during some very bad years. This included two years of JaMarcus Russell and three years in which they couldn't get more than five wins in a season.
