Babar's plea against harassment by FIA: Urgent hearing to take place today
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) fixed for urgent hearing today (Thursday), a petition filed by ex-senator Farhatullah Babar against alleged harassment by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
The petition was filed Wednesday under Article 199 of the Constitution by advocates, Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha against the Ministry of Interior and the FIA and others as respondents, 'Seeking intervention of Court against the unlawful, illegal, arbitrary and mala fide conduct in continuously harassing the petitioner through repeated issuance of ambiguous and illegal notices and summons, in what is an illegal fishing expedition/roving enquiry by the FIA in violation of laws and principles of natural justice.'
The petition said that the FIA enquiry was initiated on March 25 on the complaint of a private citizen, unknown to him, living in Morgah, Rawalpindi alleging 'suspected corruption, tax evasion and illicit asset accumulation' and he appeared before the FIA on March 28 a day before Eid holidays. No copy of the complaint was provided to him. Interestingly, on 11 April 2025, a detailed questionnaire of 12 questions was slammed at him through WhatsApp, directing him to answer them all by 7 April 2025, four days prior to receiving it. The questions delved deep into the past, requiring collecting information from multiple offices within and outside the country. Despite this, the petitioners provided answers to all the questions.
Instead of acknowledging the answers provided to the questionnaire, the FIA then asked the petitioner on May 27 to explain the source of properties which it claimed to have received from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) when he served as senator and also explain some banking transactions, within five days. The petitioner rejected the alleged transactions of Rs1,500,000 in his account on 3 April 2025 and another alleged transaction of Rs3 million on 5 July 2025 (almost a month away in the future). Thereupon, the petitioner was then directed to appear in person, the petition said.
Just when the petitioner prepared replies to these questions, the FIA sent him another notice by WhatsApp, asking him to appear in person, disregarding the previous notice to send written replies.
A day before Eid on June 6, Farhatullah Babar uploaded on X (formerly Twitter) extracts from his replies to the FIA and said; 'Two days ago, FIA regurgitated questions already replied to by me on May 12. One Q alleged transaction of 3 M on 5-7-25 (still a month away). Just when replies were being readied, the FIA WhatsApped to appear in person next day (June 5) on eve of Eid holidays. I couldn't appear in person and sent this reply.'

Senate rejects 18% tax on solar panels

He criticized the government for not reducing its expenditures and instead taxing those already burdened with taxes. Responding to the criticism, Senator Mandviwalla stated that he had remained in contact with Shibli and Mohsin Aziz of the PTI. He said all parties, including the PML-N, the PPP, and the PTI, participated in the discussions, offered suggestions, and voiced their concerns. He said the committee staff worked till 2 am and while the draft may not have been shared due to an oversight, all recommendations in the final version reflected the committee's discussions. Concluding the budget debate, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb acknowledged the valuable, balanced, and constructive input provided by senators over the past one and a half weeks. He said this consultation helped guide the government's economic policies and reinforced its commitment to transparency, fiscal responsibility, and sustainable development. "During the past fiscal year, no mini-budget was introduced, inflation was brought under control, foreign reserves increased, and the current account improved significantly," he added. He announced tax relief for salaried individuals earning between Rs600,000 and Rs1.2 million annually by reducing the income tax rate from 2.5% to 1%. This, he said, was a symbolic and practical gesture to show that the government does not wish to overburden the middle class. He also announced a 10% increase in government employees' salaries and a 7% raise in pensions. Taxes on agricultural pesticides were removed, and, following the prime minister's direction, 1,000 graduates would be sent to China for further opportunities. Regarding solar panels, the finance minister said the proposed 18% sales tax on imported parts was meant to protect local industry and create a competitive environment for solar technology investment in Pakistan. However, after consultation, the government decided to reduce the tax to 10%, applicable only to 46% of imported components, resulting in a 4.6% price hike for imported panels. He warned against profiteering, noting that some opportunistic elements had already begun increasing prices before the tax's implementation. He assured that the government would take strict legal action against such exploitation in the public interest. Aurangzeb said the relief and social protection measures included in the 2025-26 budget are not merely temporary reliefs but a practical reflection of the state's recognition and acceptance of its responsibilities. "A key measure is the increase in the budget of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) from Rs592 billion to Rs716 billion. "Expanding the scope of financial assistance under BISP reflects the government's commitment to providing economic protection to the most vulnerable segments of society," he added.

Khanewal faces spree of robberies, murder
A wave of crimes has gripped Khanewal as several robbery incidents and a fatal shooting were recorded have been recorded in recent days. In the most brazen acts, armed robbers looted cash, mobile phones, a motorcycle and even a tractor-trolley loaded with maize, while one man succumbed to injuries suffered in a shooting incident. According to the Khanewal police record, two armed men looted Rs20,000 in cash and a mobile phone from a fast food outlet in the busy Football Chowk area. In another incident, two robbers on the city outskirts near Pull Nikaso snatched Rs80,000 from a citizen named Abid Hussain. In the 46/10-R area in the jurisdiction of Khanewal Saddar Police Station, three robbers on two motorcycles intercepted a man named Imran Baloch and forcibly took away his new motorcycle. Meanwhile, in the Sarai Sidhu police limits, three robbers in a car intercepted a tractor-trolley loaded with maize enroute to a feed mill on Multan Road. They tied the driver, Ashfaq, with ropes and left him in a field before fleeing with the vehicle. Separately, in Kamran Colony, falling under Khanewal City Police Station, a man named Irshad Ahmed, injured in a recent firing incident over a monetary dispute, succumbed to his injuries in Nishtar Hospital in Multan. Khanewal police say investigations and operations are under way to apprehend those involved in the incidents. Meanwhile, in the village of 68 Mariwala nedar Khanewal, a young man cutting a tree was taken by influential persons to their camp, stripped, subjected to torture. Opposition walkouts amid passage of resolution commemorating BB's birthday
KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly on Saturday witnessed a dramatic turn during its budget session as the House passed a resolution commemorating the 72nd birth anniversary of late Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto — the first woman Prime Minister of the Islamic world — amid loud opposition protests and a walkout. The resolution, presented by veteran parliamentarian and PPP Sindh President Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, was moved out of turn with special permission from the Deputy Speaker, Anthony Naveed. This procedural bypass infuriated opposition lawmakers, who erupted in protest, raised slogans, and eventually staged a walkout from the Assembly floor. In response to the uproar, Nisar Khuhro addressed the opposition members directly, saying, 'Even you should feel proud of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. By protesting during this resolution, you are only tarnishing your image in the eyes of the people of Sindh. This resolution has been prepared in consultation with Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.' Despite the opposition's absence, the resolution paying tribute to Benazir Bhutto on her birthday was adopted by the House. Later, speaking to the media outside the Assembly, Leader of the Opposition Ali Khursheedi condemned the government's move, calling it a violation of Assembly norms and the Constitution. 'We were told on budget day that no resolutions could be tabled during the budget session. When we tried to bring a resolution in support of Iran, we were denied. But today, the same rules were bent for a political tribute. This selective application of the Constitution is unacceptable,' he said. Khursheedi further remarked, 'Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto is indeed a respected figure for all, but no one — regardless of stature — should be paid homage at the cost of violating the House's procedures during a budget session.' Taking a pointed jab, he added, 'I'm merely reminding history — Nisar Khuhro once distributed sweets upon the martyrdom of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.'
