Mayor Murtaza Wahab has said that eleven development schemes worth Rs1 billion have been approved in the budget for district east, and work on these projects will commence in coming days. He said a longstanding issue in the area is sewerage and all lines in the area will be repaired at a cost of Rs132 million. The mayor was talking to the media after laying the foundation stone for various development projects in Lines Area, including internal road restoration, drainage, and carpeting of streets. He further stated that this week, Karachi will receive another Rs1 billion development package. Opposition rejects budget, pledges shadow version for poor
The Opposition in the Punjab Assembly on Tuesday rejected the provincial government's proposed budget for fiscal year 2025-26, pledging instead to present a "shadow budget" that they claim will reflect the real needs of the poor and underserved. As Opposition Leader Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar began his opening speech during the general discussion on the annual budget, the House quickly descended into chaos. Treasury members interrupted the session with loud protests, prompting an equally noisy response from the Opposition benches. In his address, Bhachar questioned the rationale behind increasing the development budget to Rs1,240 billion when no new development projects were included in the list. He highlighted that the previous year's development budget stood at Rs842 billion, yet there remains no transparency about how or where those funds were utilized. "Where did the last budget go? There's no audit, no accountability, and now they want even more money without a single new project," Bhachar said, accusing the government of corruption in several of its flagship initiatives, including tree-planting drives and model bazaars. He criticized the increased allocation for education, pointing out that 25,000 of Punjab's 49,000 government schools have been outsourced, and more than 7 million children remain out of school. "The state of public schools is there for everyone to see, and outsourcing is not a solution," he added.

Temple land worth 1 crore retrieved from encroachers in Krishnagiri
Krishnagiri: The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department on Thursday demolished nine houses that were built on a parcel of land belonging to the Krishnagiri Pudupettai Arulmigu Prasanna Parvathy Sametha Chandra Mouleswarar Temple and retrieved 34 cents worth Rs1 crore. According to an official source, the temple land was encroached years ago by several people to build houses. "We had earlier issued notices to the owners of these houses with a request to vacate the place. Since they did not leave on their own, we demolished the houses today (Thursday) with the help of earthmovers and retrieved the temple land. The drive was carried out in the presence of police to avoid any untoward incidents. " Pointing out that some houseowners had petitioned the HR&CE commissioner against the eviction drive, the source said they would continue the drive to retrieve the encroached temple land after the conclusion of an inquiry.

There's no end in sight to wrong-side driving in Coimbatore
Coimbatore: Wrong-side driving is a common sight on the city roads, despite the traffic police's drive against the same. According to a traffic police officer, many motorists drive on the wrong side to avoid taking a U-turn and save time. He said the wrong-side driving was common on Nanjappa Road, Mettupalayam Road (at Kavundampalayam), Thadagam Road (at Idayarpalayam Junction) and Avinashi Road (near Uppilipalayam flyover). S Ashok Kumar, deputy police commissioner (traffic), said the motorists driving on the wrong side were endangering the lives of all road users, be it pedestrians or other motorists. "Two months ago, a two-wheeler on the wrong side of a road below a bridge at Eachanari caused a fatal accident. Wrong-side driving has caused four fatal accidents in the city in the past eight months." He urged the public not to drive on the wrong side of roads just to avoid travelling a few extra metres. "Mostly, people drive on the wrong side during the late night and early morning hours, when the traffic flow is less. Vehicles coming in the right direction often move at high speeds, and a sudden wrong-side entry could lead to accidents. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Experts Urge Seniors With Muscle Loss To Take This Key Nutrient Daily Native Creatine Learn More Undo Motorists should not hesitate to travel a few extra metres, while avoiding shortcuts. He said a warning would be issued to the first-time offenders and a fine of Rs1,000 would be imposed on the motorists caught repeating the offence. G Manuneethi, divisional engineer (road safety), Highways Department, Coimbatore, said advanced cameras were now available in the market to detect traffic violations. "Such cameras should be installed on major roads to help prevent accidents caused by wrong-side driving. Mere awareness campaigns are not enough. Only strict enforcement could yield effective results."
