Launch of ride program to expand youth access through free bus program

Yahoo02-06-2025

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry announced the launch of 'My Summer Ride,' a new pilot initiative offering free METS bus service for youth across the city this summer.
Officials say the program will run from June 2 through August 2, and is open to all youth aged 18 and under, as well as students over 18 who are still enrolled in high school. As part of the city's 'Safe Summer' initiative, 'My Summer Ride' was created to reduce transportation barriers that can prevent young people from accessing jobs, summer programs, libraries, parks and other 'vital community resources.'
'This program is about more than just transportation,' Mayor Stephanie Terry said. 'My Summer Ride is about expanding opportunity. It's about making sure every young person in our city can get to a job, a summer camp, or the library – regardless of whether they have a car or a ride. We're supporting working families, fostering youth independence, and building the next generation of METS riders.'

Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry says to increase accessibility, the city will work with local youth-serving organizations to help distribute METS bus passes. Those passes will be available for pick-up at the CK Newsome Center, METS Station and all public city pools. Students who may appear older than 18 should be prepared to show school ID or a report card when picking up their bus passes.
Officials say participants in My Summer Ride can use METS fixed-route and METS Mobility services at no cost. The free rides are available for any purpose, not just for school-related activities. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

City officials say by offering this program, the city of Evansville is advancing several of Mayor Terry's core priorities:
Youth Development – helping young people access enrichment, education and employment.
Public Safety – ensuring safe, reliable transportation options.
Economic Development – reducing transportation barriers for youth entering the workforce.
'My administration is committed to building a city where every child – no matter their zip code – has access to opportunity,' Mayor Terry added. 'My Summer Ride is a step toward that vision.'
Officials say full program details are available by calling METS at 812-435-6166 or asking any bus operator.

Senator Young asks SEC to protect U.S. from 'Chinese market manipulation'

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – U.S. Senator Todd Young sent a letter to Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Paul Atkins outlining concerns related to the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) 'manipulation' of global financial markets and 'evasion' of U.S. financial regulators. Sen. Young says the letter also encourages the SEC to consider additional steps to protect American markets, shareholders and the country's economic and national security. IN Department of Health celebrates decrease in infant mortality rate Senator Young writes, 'As you get settled in your new role, I write to express my concern with the continued risk that Chinese companies traded in U.S. exchanges pose to American investors and fiduciaries. I encourage the SEC to explore additional options to protect American economic and national security interests from these companies. Despite their presence on stock exchanges in the United States, these corporations are marked by a chronic—and often intentional—lack of transparency; poor corporate governance or even fraudulent behaviors and the constant threat of arbitrary or spurious enforcement actions by Chinese regulators. Moreover, the Chinese corporations lack incentives to disclose their business practices because the enforcement measures available to U.S. regulators pale in comparison to the punitive threats posed by Chinese agencies.' USPS audit sheds light on Evansville mail delays Sen. Young says American investors, fiduciaries and publicly-traded firms with operations, supply chains and business arrangements in both mainland China and Hong Kong often experience a lack of transparency, fraudulent behaviors and arbitrary threats at the hands of the CCP. Without proper protections in place, malign CCP actions are a risk to American investors and firms as well as the country's economic and national security. USI to propose no tuition increase at public forum June 5

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – The University of Southern Indiana (USI) is proposing that tuition and mandatory fees be held flat for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 academic years in response to a recommendation by the Governor and Indiana Commission for Higher Education, as well as a desire 'to maintain affordable educational excellence.' Officials say a hearing to solicit public comment will take place at 10 a.m. on June 5 in the Griffin Center. Under Indiana Code, each state educational institution is required to set tuition and fees for a two-year period following the adoption of the State's biennial budget and to hold a public hearing before the adoption of any proposed rate increases. IN State Comptroller Nieshalla calls to delist Chinese companies According to USI, the university recommends that the 2025-26 and 2026-27 per-semester, credit-hour student fee remain at the 2024-25 amount of $299.19 for Indiana resident undergraduate students; $446.94 for Indiana resident graduate students; $727.23 for non-resident undergraduate students and $875.33 for non-resident graduate students. Officials say it is also recommended that the other mandatory fees not be increased for 2025-26 and 2026-27. It should be noted USI is the latest in a list of schools opting for no tuition increase. This comes on the heels of Harvard offering free tuition for families that make less than $200K. Eyewitness News is looking into other area universities who are considering a similar approach.
