Mets' success continues to hinge on Francisco Lindor as star breaks out of slump

Advertisement During the seven-game losing streak, the reliable and likely All-Star shortstop went 3-for-26, including entering play Saturday in an 0-for-18 slump. That skid was gone by Saturday's third inning, when Lindor jumped on what would be the first of three consecutive Mets home runs. After an 11-4 victory over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park was secured, that home run meant the Mets have won the past 28 games in which Lindor has homered, just one shy of the all-time MLB record established by Carl Furillo from 1951-53. And so the Mets won and Lindor played well, brushing aside concerns about his broken pinkie toe and lugging the team on his back once more. Lindor finished 2-for-5 with one of the Mets' seven home runs, a double and three RBIs, most importantly jump-starting the Mets' comeback in the third. Jason Szenes / New York Post Down 3-1 entering the frame — an early hole the team had become accustomed to during the tailspin — Lindor stepped into a full-count four-seamer from righty Mick Abel and crushed it to the deepest part of Citizens Bank Park, 406 feet to left-center. Following their leader, Brandon Nimmo and Juan Soto then added blasts of their own to become the first Mets to go back-to-back-to-back since Nimmo, Lindor and Jeff McNeil did it in 2022. Advertisement CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS With the Mets clinging to a one-run edge and two on base, Lindor snuck a double off the wall in the right-field corner, scoring two to put the Mets ahead, 7-4, and perhaps allow his team to breathe again. Lindor did not play like an athlete who broke his right pinkie toe just two and a half weeks ago and missed only one game as a result. There has been wonder about whether the Mets would be better off giving their everyday shortstop a day or two to allow that toe to heal. As he continues to play an excellent shortstop and his bat once again looks strong, Lindor reminded why he is so difficult to pluck out of the lineup.

Joplin firefighters tackle 11th-floor fire alarm at Messenger Towers
JOPLIN, Mo. — A brief emergency inside Joplin's Messenger Towers was the result of a kitchen fire, the city said Wednesday. It happened just after 7:30 a.m. at the 14-story apartment building off 2nd and Main Street. Firefighters immediately made their way to the 11th floor amid dense, smoky conditions. METS and several other EMS personnel units were also on-scene to help evaluate residents, and fortunately, all were able to safely evacuate. The scene was cleared two hours after it was first called in. According to the Joplin Fire Marshal, the fire from the 11th-floor apartment was accidental. Brooks Raley takes key step toward Mets return with timeline taking shape

Try it free LOS ANGELES — The Mets are looking toward the All-Star break for a key left-handed reliever's possible return. Brooks Raley, who is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, has begun facing hitters in live batting practice, according to manager Carlos Mendoza. Advertisement The Mets are hopeful that Raley will be in position to begin a minor league rehab assignment late this month. Raley, 36, returned to the Mets in April on a one-year contract worth $1.5 million that contains a club option for 2026. Jose Castillo, who was acquired last month after he was designated for assignment by Arizona, is the only remaining lefty reliever on the 26-man roster. Raley had a strong season for the Mets in 2023, when he pitched to a 2.80 ERA in 66 appearances. That Raley is a reliever will considerably shorten his rehab stint once he progresses to pitching in minor league games. Advertisement But Raley, as is the protocol for a pitcher returning from Tommy John surgery, will need 10-12 sessions facing hitters in live batting practice before he's considered for that next step. Raley has thrown five such sessions. Even so, team brass views the All-Star break as a realistic possibility for Raley. Sean Manaea threw 29 pitches in a live batting practice session, after which Mendoza didn't rule out the possibility the left-hander's next step would be a minor league rehab assignment. Manaea is rehabbing from an oblique strain that has kept him sidelined since spring training. Advertisement Mendoza offered his thoughts pregame on the Mets returning to Dodger Stadium for the first time since their loss in Game 6 of the NLCS last October. 'It's a different feeling, walking in this place and knowing this is where your season ended,' Mendoza said. 'It's kind of like a sour taste, but also understanding that after everything we went through as a team, when nobody thought anything about this team and we ended up facing the team that ended up winning the World Series. 'It's a different feeling this year, understanding that they are really good again and we're also good. I think it's mixed feelings coming here, but we're not trying to look back.'

Launch of ride program to expand youth access through free bus program
HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry announced the launch of 'My Summer Ride,' a new pilot initiative offering free METS bus service for youth across the city this summer. Officials say the program will run from June 2 through August 2, and is open to all youth aged 18 and under, as well as students over 18 who are still enrolled in high school. As part of the city's 'Safe Summer' initiative, 'My Summer Ride' was created to reduce transportation barriers that can prevent young people from accessing jobs, summer programs, libraries, parks and other 'vital community resources.' 'This program is about more than just transportation,' Mayor Stephanie Terry said. 'My Summer Ride is about expanding opportunity. It's about making sure every young person in our city can get to a job, a summer camp, or the library – regardless of whether they have a car or a ride. We're supporting working families, fostering youth independence, and building the next generation of METS riders.' Insurance company to sponsor pool event for first 400 kids Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry says to increase accessibility, the city will work with local youth-serving organizations to help distribute METS bus passes. Those passes will be available for pick-up at the CK Newsome Center, METS Station and all public city pools. Students who may appear older than 18 should be prepared to show school ID or a report card when picking up their bus passes. Officials say participants in My Summer Ride can use METS fixed-route and METS Mobility services at no cost. The free rides are available for any purpose, not just for school-related activities. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
