Joe Root Becomes 1st England Batter To Score 7000 Runs In ODIs
Last Updated:
In 179 ODIs played so far for England, Root has 7082 runs to his name. He is the first English batter to score 7000 runs in ODIs.
Joe Root was in action for England on Sunday (June 1) in the second ODI of the ongoing three-match series against the West Indies. The 34-year-old right-handed batter from Yorkshire faced 139 balls for the Harry Brook-led side at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff and scored a career-best 166. His 166-run knock helped England chase down the target of 309 runs in 48.5 overs for the loss of seven wickets and win the match by 3 wickets.
During his 166-run knock, Root entered his name in the history books by becoming the first English batter to score 7000 runs in ODIs. Root needed 84 runs on Sunday to cross the 7000-run mark, and he achieved the objective by scoring a boundary on the fourth ball of the 33rd over of England's innings bowled by Matthew Forde.
Before becoming the first English batter to score 7000 runs in ODIs, Root went past Eoin Morgan's tally of 6957 runs to become the leading run getter in the 50-over format of the game for the 2019 ODI World Cup.
Most runs for ENG in ODIs
Root came out to bat at No. 3 for England in Cardiff and added 85 runs for the third wicket with Brook (47 from 36) and 143 runs for the sixth wicket with Will Jacks (49 from 58 balls).
Root is now England's leading run getter in Tests and ODIs. The 34-year-old batter became the first English batter to score 13,000 runs in Test cricket last month. He will be a key batter for the Ben Stokes-led side in the five-match Test series against India.
India will face England in a five-match Test series. The series opener is scheduled to take place at Headingley in Leeds from June 20 to 24, and the next four matches will be played in Birmingham, Lord's, Manchester and The Oval, respectively.
Root has played 30 Tests for England against India so far and has 2846 runs to his name. If he manages to score 154 runs in the upcoming five matches, then he will become the first batter in the world to score 3000 runs in Test cricket against India.

Bellingham strikes as Dortmund sink Sundowns in Club World Cup thriller
Jobe Bellingham netted his first Borussia Dortmund goal in a gripping 4-3 win over Mamelodi Sundowns at the Club World Cup on Saturday. HT Image The English midfielder, who this month followed older brother Jude's footsteps in joining the German side, started for the first time for Dortmund. Sundowns of South Africa took a surprise early lead but Dortmund hit back strongly to triumph in sweltering conditions in Cincinnati at the TQL Stadium and move top of Group F. "It's a really nice bonus (to score), I'm glad we won but there's a lot of things for me to improve on personally and for the team," Bellingham told DAZN. Dortmund coach Niko Kovac had claimed teams from the "south" had an advantage because of the heat, and the Sundowns 11th minute opener appeared to confirm his fears. Lucas Ribeiro's fine solo goal put the CAF Champions League runners-up ahead, with the Brazilian charging forward from his own half before beating Gregor Kobel. However Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams handed Dortmund their equaliser on a plate, passing the ball straight to Felix Nmecha, who stroked home. Both stoppers made good saves in an end-to-end clash before Dortmund claimed the lead through striker Serhou Guirassy. Dortmund won the ball high up the pitch and Julian Brandt crossed for the Guinea international to score with a fine leap and header, continuing his fine form this season. Bellingham, who joined earlier in June from Sunderland for 33 million euros ($37 million), netted Dortmund's third just before the break. Williams parried a cross into his path and after controlling on his chest, Bellingham drilled home. "I've practised that so many times, arriving late on the edge of the box as a midfielder is something you have to be really good at," said Bellingham. "As a kid and at Sunderland I've practised that so many times, during training, after training, so I'm really proud of it." His brother Jude signed for Dortmund five years ago, before joining Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2023. "Hey Jobe," sang Dortmund fans, adapting the Beatles classic "Hey Jude" which they used to sing to Jude Bellingham. "I didn't hear that but it's really nice," said the Dortmund midfielder. Dortmund were toothless in their opening draw against Fluminense but grabbed their fourth when Kuliso Mudau turned into his own net as he tried to cut out a cross. Three minutes later Iqraam Rayners pulled one back as the Sundowns, who have won the last eight South African league titles, refused to give up. Rayners, who netted Sundowns' winner in the first match against Ulsan HD, hit the post with a header and reacted quickly to nod home the rebound. Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso's side pulled back another through Lebo Mothiba in the 90th minute, forcing Dortmund to sweat through six minutes of stoppage time before they were able to celebrate their victory. "The result is not what we wanted but we made a wonderful game," Cardoso told DAZN. "It's important people understand what was at stake in this match. (Considering) the level of team that we played against, we worked fantastically. "The boys made a wonderful performance... it was a hell of a match. I'm not happy but very proud." Later Saturday in the other Group F clash Fluminense take on Ulsan at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. rbs/ea BORUSSIA DORTMUND

"India's greatest wicketkeeper-batter ever...": Manjrekar on Pant's century against England
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 21 (ANI): Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar hailed Rishabh Pant as the country's 'greatest wicketkeeper-batter ever' following his breathtaking century against England, calling him a 'breath of fresh air'. Pant continued his fine run in Test cricket, getting his seventh Test ton and breaking plenty of records during his knock in the first Test against England at Leeds. Speaking on 'Match Centre Live' after the first session, JioStar expert, Manjrekar said, 'By far, India's greatest ever Test batter-keeper. I was worried when he was in the 90s that he might end up getting his 8th 90 of his career. It is just unbelievable that he has so many 90s! But he's a breath of fresh air.' 'When he got out and raised his bat, there were a lot of English supporters who stood up and applauded that innings. That's what we love about England -- these guys come to watch good cricket. They want their team to win, but when they see excellence from the opposition, you can see true appreciation for it,' he added. Pant on Saturday surpassed MS Dhoni to register the most Test centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper-batter and continued his good show in what are regarded as tough wickets in countries outside Asia. Pant reached the milestone during India's first Test against England at Leeds. In his innings, Pant smashed 134 in 178 balls, with 12 fours and six sixes. His runs came at a strike rate of over 75. Pant now has seven centuries, overtaking Dhoni, who has six Test centuries. This is also his fifth century in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) conditions, the most by an Asian batter. Three of these centuries have come in England and one each have come in Australia and South Africa. Also, he has equalled Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara (seven centuries) for most centuries in Tests as a designated keeper among all Asian countries. Earlier on Friday, Pant also completed his 3,000 Test runs, becoming the second Indian wicketkeeper-batter to do so after Dhoni and overtook Dhoni to become Asia's most successful wicketkeeper-batter in SENA on the basis of run count. In 44 Tests for India, Pant has scored 3,082 runs at an average of 43.40, with seven centuries and 15 fifties in 76 innings. His runs have come at a stunning strike rate of 73.69. Coming to the match, England opted to bowl first. Centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal (101 in 159 balls, with 16 fours), skipper Shubman Gill (147 in 227 balls, with 19 fours and a six) and Pant (134 in 178 balls, with 12 fours and six sixes) took India to 471 all out. Skipper Ben Stokes (4/66) and Josh Tongue (4/86) were the top bowlers for England. (ANI)
