007 First Light revealed: New James Bond game by IO Interactive

Express Tribune03-06-2025

Danish studio IO Interactive has confirmed the official title of its long-anticipated James Bond game.
Formerly referred to as Project 007, the game is now known as 007: First Light and will be unveiled later this week, ahead of the annual Summer Game Fest.
According to the game's official website, 007: First Light will present 'a wholly original Bond origin story,' allowing players to step into the role of the iconic British spy and earn their 00 status.
The studio has not disclosed specific platforms for the game, but First Light was briefly teased during April's Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, suggesting the title will appear on Nintendo's upcoming console.
IO Interactive, best known for its Hitman series, is crafting the game independently of any existing James Bond films.
Chief executive Hakan Abrak confirmed in previous interviews that the studio's iteration of Bond will be unique to its universe and not derived from the portrayals seen in cinema.
'What's exciting about that project is that we actually got to do an original story,' Abrak said. 'It's not a gamification of a movie. It's completely beginning and becoming a story, hopefully for a big trilogy out there in the future.'
007: First Light is set to launch as the opening chapter in a planned trilogy.
Its announcement is part of a broader slate of third-party titles revealed for the Nintendo Switch 2, including Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Street Fighter 6, Yakuza 0: Director's Cut, and FromSoftware's The Duskbloods.
Nintendo also confirmed several first-party titles, such as Donkey Kong Bananza, Mario Kart World, and Kirby Air Riders.
While IO Interactive has not confirmed whether First Light will feature at Summer Game Fest Live—scheduled for Friday, 6 June—fans are anticipating further details.
The showcase is also expected to feature new footage from Hideo Kojima's studio and a mysterious title known only as Ill.

Donkey Kong Bananza brings 3D platforming and chaos to Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup

Nintendo's upcoming console, the Switch 2, will launch with Donkey Kong Bananza, a vibrant and action-packed platformer that puts the spotlight back on one of its most iconic characters. According to Jordan Minor of PCMag, the game was the standout title at Nintendo's recent hands-on event—so compelling it briefly made him forget about Mario. In Bananza, Donkey Kong features a refreshed design—first seen in The Super Mario Bros. Movie—with expressive eyes and finely detailed, feather-like fur. The first level is set in a gold mine, where Kong dons a miner's outfit and powers through mud, crystals, and hidden bananas in a richly interactive, destructible environment. Though not officially confirmed, Minor speculates that the game could be the work of Nintendo's Tokyo studio, the developers behind Super Mario Odyssey and Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. Bananza mixes 3D platforming with classic 2D-style sequences, like barrel blasts and mine carts, while leaning into Donkey Kong's brute strength. Rather than bouncing around like Mario, players smash through terrain, unearth collectibles, and hurl explosive rocks to solve puzzles and defeat enemies. Other mechanics include rolling into a ball, climbing walls, and interacting with a mysterious talking rock companion. While not all abilities were needed in the demo, Minor noted the controls felt intuitive and teased deeper exploration possibilities ahead. Donkey Kong Bananza will be released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on July 17, retailing at $70. With stunning visuals, tactile gameplay, and a fresh direction for the franchise, Bananza is shaping up to be the 3D Donkey Kong adventure fans have been waiting for.

Nikkei hits four-month high on weaker yen

SINGAPORE: Japan's Nikkei share average touched a four-month high on Wednesday, boosted by a weaker yen even as investors kept a wary eye on the rapidly escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. The Nikkei ended the day up 0.9% at the session's high of 38,885.15, a level last seen on February 20. The broader Topix rose 0.8%. The biggest boost to the Nikkei came from Uniqlo-brand owner Fast Retailing, chip-testing equipment maker Advantest and Switch-maker Nintendo, which rose 2%, 1.2% and 6.6%, respectively. 'Japan remains one of our favoured equity markets,' said Ben Powell, chief APAC investment strategist at the BlackRock Investment Institute. 'Ongoing shareholder-friendly reforms to boost profitability support our tactical overweight on Japanese stocks,' he said. 'We prefer unhedged equity exposures, given the yen's tendency to strengthen during periods of market stress.' The Nikkei steadily extended its advance as the day progressed despite heightened worries among market participants over the potential for a more direct US military involvement in the Middle East.

Aaron Pierre gains James Bond buzz after breakout performance in Netflix's Rebel Ridge

Speculation around the next James Bond continues to grow, and British actor Aaron Pierre has emerged as a compelling candidate. Industry insider Daniel Richtman recently reported that Pierre is among those being considered for the iconic role. Fans and critics alike point to his performance in Netflix's 2024 action thriller Rebel Ridge as a strong argument in his favor. Directed by Jeremy Saulnier, Rebel Ridge follows Terry Richmond, a former marine who travels to Shelby Springs to help his cousin. Once there, he becomes entangled in a violent conflict with corrupt local police. Pierre's portrayal of Richmond earned acclaim for its balance of intensity, physicality, and charisma—traits long associated with the Bond character. In a review by Dexerto, Pierre's performance was described as 'a star-is-born moment'—'hulking, intimidating, but coolly charismatic.' The Guardian praised it as 'a real movie star arrival,' while Variety highlighted his 'restraint and precision,' calling his character both 'sympathetic' and powerful. Even The Observer, despite reservations about the film, noted that Pierre deserves his own action franchise. Pierre is also set to star as John Stewart in the upcoming DC series Lanterns, marking his entry into the superhero genre. But fans are now wondering whether his next big role could be as James Bond. With charm, intelligence, and effortless screen presence, Rebel Ridge proves that Pierre has all the right ingredients to take on the legendary 007 role.
