Juventus 4 Wydad 1 – Majestic Yildiz denied brilliant hat-trick, flares on pitch and surprising match-ups

New York Times7 hours ago

Kenan Yildiz was the star as his two brilliant goals helped Juventus continue their 100 per cent start to the Club World Cup.
The young Turk's first-half wonderstrike and winding finish in the second were the highlights. He was denied a hat-trick, however, as the first Juve goal, after great work from Yildiz, was given as a own goal. Wydad gave their raucous fans a first goal of the tournament to celebrate when Thembinkosi Lorch pulled one back, which led to a flare being thrown on to the pitch and smoke engulfing much of the playing area. A Juve penalty completed the scoring.

The final group games take place on June 26, with Juve facing City and Wydad taking on Al Ain.
Here Steve Madeley and Larry Henry Jr break down the action from Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia.
Juventus's Turkey international Kenan Yildiz is only 20 but in a relatively short senior career, he has made a habit of scoring goals that are a little out of the ordinary.
So when Andrea Cambiaso rolled a pass to him on the edge of the Wydad penalty area 16 minutes into his latest game, Juventus fans would have had an inkling what might be about to happen.
Sure enough, Yildiz made an incredibly difficult piece of technique look ridiculously simple, connecting with the outside portion of the laces of his right boot to propel the ball with a cocktail of power, precision and swerve that took it away from helpless goalkeeper El Mehdi Benabid and into the top corner.
It should have been no surprise, coming as it did from a player who announced his first-team arrival with a superb first senior goal against Frosinone in Serie A in December 2023.
He then scored the first goal in the revamped Champions League group stage in September with a stunner against PSV Eindhoven (below).
If his talent needed underlining further against Wydad, it was in the second half as he scored a goal with echoes of his strike against Frosinone to complete a 'spiritual hat-trick', even though he will not be credited with an actual one.
That was because the opening Juventus goal, which was entirely down to Yildiz's mesmeric dribbling and near-post shot, went down as a own-goal for Abdelmounaim Boutouil.
Steve Madeley
The Wydad supporters were out in bunches again at Lincoln Financial Field, providing a deafening atmosphere from the pre-match warm-ups through the final whistle.
Similar to Wednesday's match against Manchester City, the Wydad supporters chanted loudly, banged their drums, and even threw a few flares onto the field, not far from goalkeeper El Mehdi Benabid (see below) following Lorch's goal in the 25th minute.
A PA announcement was made in the 44th minute reminding fans that pyrotechnic usage was prohibited, but Wydad supporters responded to the intercom message by setting off three or four additional flares in the stands. They then booed the half-time whistle from referee Said Martinez as it was blown with Wydad in the ascendance.
While Manchester City, Chelsea, and Juventus have garnered most of the headlines in Philadelphia, the scenes left from the Wydad, Flamengo, and Esperance de Tunis fans have certainly left a positive impression in the city.

This Club World Cup is a dream come true for fans of high-profile blasts from the past. Whether it is Sergio Ramos scoring for Mexican side Monterrey, Edinson Cavani rolling back the years for Boca Juniors or any number of former Premier League folk heroes lining up for Al Hilal, the tournament is a hotbed for former stars enjoying another day in the spotlight.
But it was the turn of two of the Premier League's less heralded players to go head to head in Philadelphia.
Nordin Amrabat, who joined Wydad from Hull City just before this tournament, and Lloyd Kelly (who moved to Juve from Newcastle earlier this year) had met before, in the relatively less glamorous surroundings of Watford's Vicarage Road in a 2017 Carabao Cup tie.
Just over 9,000 fans watched Amrabat's Watford side lose to 3-2 Kelly's Bristol City in that game, and both came up against each other several times on Sunday. Amrabat got the assist for Wydad's goal as well as sending in several dangerous crosses.

Mascherano urges Miami to embrace 'historical' chance

Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano says his team cannot play for a draw against Brazilian club Palmeiras in the Club World Cup on Monday. (Kevin C. Cox) Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano says Monday's meeting with Brazil's Palmeiras in the final game of Club World Cup Group A is a historical moment for the MLS club and says his team should relish the game. Miami's shock win over Porto, secured via a brilliant free-kick from Lionel Messi, has left them with a chance of making it to the last 16 of the tournament. Advertisement And while the club, which only began playing five years ago, would advance with a draw, their Argentine coach doesn't want his players leaving anything to chance. "We're facing possibly one of the most important games in the history of our club. Above all, let that fill us with enthusiasm to be able to play it, let it not be a burden but an excitement and a challenge for this group of players who have been doing well up until now," said Mascherano. "It would be a big mistake if we went into it thinking about not playing it and only about the result. I think that when you think about the result certain things can happen during the game that make it very difficult to get back into the game," he said. "In the end, our idea is to go and win the game like we've always done, like every time we go into a game, whether it's in the Club World Cup, MLS, the Champions League, or any other competition we're involved in," he said. Advertisement But while Miami, whose form in MLS was patchy heading into the tournament, may be confident after beating Portuguese opposition in Atlanta, Mascherano also cautioned against being too gung-ho. "We clearly want to win it through a plan. We don't go crazy, knowing that we have to minimise many of Palmeiras' strengths and try to take advantage of and expose their weaknesses" he said. Mascherano could be boosted by the return to full fitness of Spanish full-back Jordi Alba who missed the draw against Al Ahly with injury and played the last 11 minutes against Porto. "Physically, I feel good. Obviously, I was out for three weeks without playing, but honestly, it doesn't feel like a big gap since there was an international break during that time. I didn't really miss much. Now we'll see what the coach decides," he said. Advertisement "Playing against elite teams only sharpens us as a team, and if we reach the knockout rounds, just imagine how high our ceiling could be. I really believe we're doing things the right way, and we have to keep it going," he said. sev/rcw

Mbappe nears return from illness as Real Madrid wins at Club World Cup

Jude Bellingham and Arda Guler scored first-half goals and short-handed Real Madrid bounced back from a disappointing performance in its Club World Cup opener to beat Pachuca 3-1 on Sunday in front of 70,248 spectators at Bank of America Stadium. Seven minutes in, defender Raul Asencio received a red card, forcing Real Madrid to play the remainder of the match with 10 men. It hardly mattered as Madrid dominated the Mexican club rest of the way to give Xabi Alonso his first win as coach of the Spanish power. Bellingham got Madrid on the board in the 35th minute when he took a pass from Fran Garcia just inside the box and belted a perfectly placed left-footed shot past goalkeeper Carlos Moreno into the right corner. Eight minutes later, Güler made it 2-0 when he delivered a right-footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom left corner off an assist from Gonzalo Garcia. Federico Valverde put the final touches on the win in the second half with a sliding right-footed shot off an assist from Brahim Diaz. Goalkeeper Thabaut Courtois was on form with five saves in the first half. He turned away two point-blank shots in the early going and finished with 10 saves. Elias Montiel ended Courtois' bid for a shutout when he scored in the 80th minute for Pachuca, which fell to 0-2 in group play. Kylian Mbappe has missed both Club World Cup starts after being hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis. He did not travel to Charlotte, but the team remains hopeful that he'll be ready to play on Thursday night against Salzburg. Alonso told The Associated Press after the game that he is "looking forward to have him back. We need to go day by day." There were some uneasy minutes early in the match for Madrid when Asencio pulled down Pacheco's Agustin Palavecino as he was entering the box following a breakaway, forcing Aurelein Tchouameni to move to center back. But Madrid stayed on the attack and Bellingham had the breakthrough goal. Madrid looked very much out of sync on Wednesday, playing Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal to a 1-1 draw in Alonso's first game when Federico Valverde's stoppage-time penalty was saved. That changed on Sunday as the talented roster began to mesh, with precise passing leading to both first-half goals. The game was played on a temporary grass field. The stadium is home to the NFL's Carolina Panthers, who play on an artificial surface. With temperatures in the low 90s Fahrenheit (low 30s Celsius), players were given water breaks midway through each half. Reporting by The Associated Press. ‘Team Ronaldo' Palmeiras defender Murilo eyes win over Messi, vows to do ‘siu' celebration if he scores

Palmeiras defender Murilo has set his sights on cancelling out the threat of Lionel Messi when his side plays Inter Miami on Monday — in part because he is 'team Ronaldo'. The centre-back has played 90 minutes in each of his team's Group A matches so far, helping them keep clean sheets against Porto and Al Ahly. Advertisement Now comes a first-vs-second clash with the MLS outfit, and a chance to test himself against perhaps the greatest player of all time. Not that Murilo would describe Messi in those terms. He prefers the Argentine's great rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, as he admitted in Sunday's pre-match press duties. 'I'm team Ronaldo,' Murillo said when asked which player he holds in greater esteem. 'I think he's a really complete player. I think even his temper is good, a positive thing. I think what sets him apart is his discipline. I really try to emulate that — his discipline, his routine. I really like him.' Asked by reporters whether he would consider reproducing Ronaldo's trademark 'siu' celebration if he scores against Inter Miami, he responded in the affirmative. 'Yes,' he said. 'Yes, I'll do it.' As for the possibility of swapping shirts with Messi at the final whistle, Murilo said he was happy to let his team-mates fight over the momento. 'I'm not going to get involved in that,' he said. 'There are already a lot of people who are going to be asking for it. It's all good. I'm just focused on marking him.' Palmeiras face Inter Miami at the Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, at 3pm ET.
