Harrison County Chamber holds 2025 legislative preview lunch

Yahoo29-01-2025

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WBOY) — To give its members an opportunity to meet with local representatives before they head to Charleston for the 2025 West Virginia Regular Legislative Session, the Harrison County Chamber hosted its annual legislative preview lunch on Tuesday.
Chamber President Kathy Wagner said that another important facet of this annual event is to allow delegates and senators to share with the community what they expect to see in the upcoming session.
'It's gonna be interesting,' Wagner said of the coming session, with the committee structure being a little different this year and Governor Patrick Morrisey recently announcing a potential state deficit.

'So, that's always a question and we wanna monitor taxes on business, keep track of infrastructure in Harrison County and north central West Virginia, and just make sure that there's nothing that would be a detriment to the business climate,' she added.
Wagner added that it's important to ensure that business owners and the local community are aware of what's going on and who to reach out to with any concerns. 'If there is an issue, you wanna make sure you […] know who your delegates and representatives are.'
The Harrison County Chamber invited both district senators and all four of the delegates who represent Harrison County to attend this luncheon. After they were given the floor to speak about what they anticipate is coming up during the session, attendees got to participate in a Q&A to discuss matters that are important to them as well.
Wagner stated that she was grateful to have a great turnout, adding that the chamber is appreciative of the representatives for all they do for Harrison County residents in Charleston.

Vance: Trump ‘may decide he needs to take further action to end Iranian enrichment'

Vice President Vance weighed in Tuesday as the Trump administration debates its next steps in the conflict between Israel and Iran. In a lengthy post on the social platform X, Vance laid out the administration's issues with Iran enriching uranium and argued the president has shown 'remarkable restraint' thus far. 'He may decide he needs to take further action to end Iranian enrichment. That decision ultimately belongs to the president,' the vice president wrote. 'And of course, people are right to be worried about foreign entanglement after the last 25 years of idiotic foreign policy. 'But I believe the president has earned some trust on this issue,' Vance continued. 'And having seen this up close and personal, I can assure you that he is only interested in using the American military to accomplish American people's goals.' He said Trump had in recent months 'encouraged his foreign policy team to reach a deal with the Iranians' to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. Vance also argued Iran had enriched uranium 'far above the level necessary for any civilian purpose.' The post marked Vance's most extensive comments at a precarious moment in the conflict in the Middle East. The vice president was one of several top officials expected to meet with Trump in the Situation Room on Tuesday. Trump departed the Group of Seven meeting in Canada late Monday, one day earlier than expected, because he wanted to be back in Washington as Israel and Iran traded missile strikes. The president said during the flight back to Washington he was looking for 'an end, a real end, not a ceasefire, a real end.' He later described what he was seeking as a 'complete give-up' by Iran. How Local Economic Development Act funds help New Mexico businesses grow

NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – For years, state and city grant funding has been used to grow businesses in New Mexico with the goal of keeping jobs here and boosting the economy. One local business who has expanded over the years said it's all thanks to that local funding. Vitality Works, located in Albuquerque, makes dietary and herbal supplements. 'We are the guys that really make the stuff for over 600 brands in the United States. Our name is on nothing, but we make other people's goods and fully package turnkey operations,' said Vitality Works CEO/Founder Mitch Coven. Coven said since he started his company in the 1980's, it's far surpassed his goals. He said the growth wouldn't have been possible without money from grants and tax credits. 'Everything that the city, county, state has made available to us has helped foster our growth even faster,' added Coven. One of the grants he's received is through the Local Economic Development Act, or LEDA which was signed into New Mexico law in the early 90's to incentivize and support growing businesses. 'We want the public sector to be an enabling partner that allows those entrepreneurs and those companies to be successful,' said Director of Economic Development for the City of Albuquerque Max Gruner. Vitality Works is just one company that's benefited from LEDA in the metro. In just the past eight years, the city of Albuquerque has committed more than $13.7 million in LEDA funding to help grow and retain 15 businesses. Those who qualify are expected to show how their company will expand, create jobs and have a local economic impact. 'We are really trying to use the mechanism of these incentives to create generational wealth for our families in Albuquerque,' said Gruner. Vitality Works produces 50,000 bottles of supplements and more a day. Coven believes his company is a way to give back to New Mexico as he employs more than 300 people and he sources some herbs in the state. His company is receiving it's second LEDA funding, which he hopes to use to expand the company even further by adding another 30,000 square feet to his facility. 'Our plans are to keep capturing the growth. We have to keep expanding,' said Coven. State LEDA funds are appropriated by the legislature, while participating cities also have their own LEDA funds, which are controlled by city councils. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
