Bruno Fernandes sends five-word message after putting Man Utd misery behind him
Bruno Fernandes captained Manchester United during their awful season, but successfully put that behind him to play a key role as Portugal won the Nations League final on Sunday
Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes admitted "winning for Portugal is different" as he put his club's difficult season behind him by winning the Nations League on Sunday night. Fernandes played 57 games in all competitions for United this campaign.
It was a miserable year for the Red Devils as they finished 15th in the Premier League and failed to win a major trophy. Fernandes captained United in all of his appearances and even held talks over a potential exit earlier this summer.
Instead the midfielder has decided to stay at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future. Fernandes has moved his focus to international duty, where Portugal were featuring in the Nations League finals.
They beat hosts Germany in the semi-finals to set up a date with bitter rivals Spain in Sunday's final. Fernandes started at the Allianz Arena, taking over the armband after Cristiano Ronaldo was substituted off.
The United star then stepped up to score a crucial penalty in the shootout which Portugal won to lift the trophy. And Fernandes has insisted the win has helped him put United's dreadful campaign behind him.
'I'm going to celebrate with my teammates and my family. It's a special moment for everyone. Winning for Portugal is different. It's for our family, for our people, for the country, for our people," he said
"Once again, the wave of red that I saw so much on social media was there and made us feel like we were playing at home. Thank you very much for all the support, it was excellent. We felt it, from start to finish, from the moment we got to the end.
'Everything we did during the game helped us win. We knew we were going up against a great team, and at the same time we knew we were a team of the same level. We knew Spain's qualities, we were very aggressive when losing the ball, which was very important."
Fernandes pinpointed Portugal's 'individual talent' as the reason for their historic win, their first in a competitive match against Spain since Euro 2004. In particular, he singled out Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes, keeper Diogo Costa and midfielder Ruben Neves.
"We had individual talent on our side, such as Nuno [Mendes] , our left-sided player, who ended up running over everyone and ended up giving us two moments of great joy, with his runs," he added.
"Individual talent is what makes you win the game, like Diogo Costa's save and Rúben Neves' penalty. We don't need to be favourites. That's up to the person who says it, there will always be those who say that some are favourites, others will say that others are.
"That doesn't matter to us. We, the Portuguese, go out there to win, whatever it is, whoever is ahead of us. We want to win every game. Sometimes it's possible, sometimes it's not.
"Sometimes we play better, sometimes we play worse. But we always give everything on the pitch and with the knowledge that we are capable of beating any team, at any time."

Isak 'taking things into own hands' claim shows what Liverpool and Arsenal need
Alexander Isak has been linked with a move to Liverpool and Arsenal in the summer transfer window, but he has been told he doesn't need to leave Newcastle United to realise his ambitions Liverpool and Arsenal need Alexander Isak to take matters into his own hands if they are to have any chance of signing the Newcastle striker this summer. That's according to former Magpies midfielder Geremi, who also insists the Swede doesn't need to leave St James' Park to take his career to the next level. The Gunners, who are in the market for a top-class number nine this summer, are long-term admirers of Isak. Meanwhile, Liverpool have also emerged as potential suitors as they look for an upgrade on Darwin Nunez, who's available for sale. However, Newcastle are under no pressure to sell and would only consider letting him leave for a fee in excess of £150million, reports The Telegraph. There has been no suggestion that Isak – whose Magpies contract has another three years left to run – is really angling for a move. That stance from the player would need to change, says Geremi, for either of last season's top two to land the prolific 25-year-old. 'First of all, they [Newcastle] need to keep their best players at all costs,' said Geremi, speaking to BoyleSports, who offer the latest Club World Cup odds. 'I'm not sure Newcastle would sell Isak for any fee, but it would become an issue if the player took the decision into his own hands.' Having won the Carabao Cup earlier this year and qualified for the Champions League, the former Chelsea midfielder and Cameroon international insists the Magpies are now on the 'same level' as Liverpool and Arsenal. Geremi added: 'He had a great season and is at one of the biggest teams in the world when it comes to financial backing. 'The environment is all there and I don't think he would gain anything by moving to Liverpool or Arsenal. I think Newcastle are at the same level. Newcastle are now contenders to win the Premier League and the Champions League. 'When they got new owners, I said it would take them three or four years and a trophy to put them in that position and now they are there. They are ready to compete because they have been built under Eddie Howe, they have the right finances and they are an attractive proposition for new players. 'New signings will have no doubt about joining the club this summer and I wouldn't be surprised if they have an incredible season.' For Arsenal, a deal for either Benjamin Seskso or Viktor Gyokeres looks much more likely at this stage. A new number nine is seen as critical as Arsenal look to go from 'nearly men' to winners following three successive runner-up finishes in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Liverpool have already been busy this summer, signing Bayer Leverkusen pair Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong. The former has now completed his transfer, which could rise to £116m – meaning the Reds have already broken the British record this summer.

Benjamin Nygren earns incredible Celtic transfer hype as legendary signing senses something special
Winger is close to finalising a deal to join Celtic and former defender Rieper insists he is perfect for Parkhead. He was nurtured in Nordsjaelland's Right to Dream Park. Now Benjamin Nygren is preparing to live that fantasy with Celtic in the Champions League. The winger is just the latest in a long production line of stars to head out of the Danish club with ambitions for bigger and better things. Nygren may have come through the ranks back in Sweden at IFK Gothenburg before moving on to Genk in Belgium and a loan spell at Dutch side Herenveen. But it was only after he moved to Nordsjaelland that he finally out down roots. And blossomed at a club former Celtic hero Marc Rieper is one of the best for developing young talent in the whole of Europe. One look at the Farum-based club's transfer business in recent years certainly backs that statement up. A year ago Conrad Harder left for Sporting Lisbon for £16.5m and lifted the Portuguese title. Weeks earlier Ibrahim Osman moved to Brighton for £17m. Twelve months before that a record £21m was banked in a deal that saw Ghana winger Ernest Nuamah move to Belgians Molenbeek and immediately head to parent club Lyon. Chuck in Southampton's Kamaldeen Sulemana who brought in £14.5m when he moved to Rennes in 2021 and fellow wide men Mohamed Kudus, Simon Adingra and Andreas Schjelderup who all moved for just shy of £10m and since 2021 Nordsjaelland have been bankrolled by a production line of wingers. Nygren is just the latest. But this time Brendan Rodgers looks to have got a snip at just shy of £2m if all clauses are emt. And it's a price Rieper reckons is an absolute bargain for a player he reckons will take Scottish football by storm. He said:: 'This is a really good signing for Celtic. Nygren was one of the top players in Denmark last season. A really exciting player. 'Nordsjaelland are unbelievable at developing players. They do it every year. 'They sell two or three every year for big money, £10million-plus. Then they just produce new stars at 17 or 18-year-old. 'They are probably the best in Europe at developing. They bought Nygren when he was an under 21 for Sweden but not really with a big reputation. They just nursed him and made him what he is now. 'They are really skilful at doing that. Now he is a full international with his country and doing well for them as well. 'I think Celtic have done really well to sign Nygren. I have actually been a bit surprised that Nordsjaelland have been able to keep him for so long. 'His contract was close to running out so they couldn't wait and let him lose for free. 'They opted to keep him last season when there was some interest and try to get in the top six. 'They managed that. Now it's time for him to move on.' The 23-year-old netted a career-best 16 goals across all competitions last season - having stuck 12 the previous campaign. HIs form saw him win a first call-up to the Swedish national team in March and he's since gone on to win four caps, netting another two goals. Celtic fans looking for a tricky, paced winger who knows the way to goal are in for a treat, according to Rieper, who was part of Wim Jansen 's title-winning Hoops side in 1997-98. The Dane said: 'Nygren was in the top seven or eight goalscorers in the Danish league last season. He has a good technique from distance. 'As a winger he goes past people because he has pace. 'He has good skills with the ball and is really neat passer, good at making connections with other players. He's an exciting player. I think the Celtic fans will really like him.'

Trent Alexander-Arnold's comments about Mo Salah speak volumes about him
It took a while for English football to catch on when it came to Mohamed Salah's star qualities, but Trent Alexander-Arnold knew early on Liverpool were onto something special We are now eight years into Mohamed Salah 's Anfield career, and there isn't a football fan in Europe who isn't aware of his place in the Liverpool pecking order. Although it took time for some to truly appreciate his talent, Trent Alexander-Arnold knew early on the Reds had signed someone different. After a failed spell at Chelsea, Salah went out on loan to Fiorentina and Roma, permanently joining the latter in 2016. One more year would pass before he was back on English shores with Liverpool, and the then-club-record fee of £43million looked like a snip within months. Despite the struggles he endured at Stamford Bridge, it took no time at all for his Liverpool team-mates to cotton onto what they had signed. Academy graduate Alexander-Arnold, who recently left Anfield to sign for Real Madrid, gave his account of the Egyptian's tireless mindset. "The first day of pre-season was just a running session," he told Copa90 back in May 2018 when asked what Salah is like off the pitch. "Not a race, just to see how far you can run really. It gets harder each lap you do so you end up doing quite a bit of running and you drop out when you can't go any further. "So everyone has dropped out and it's just me and him left and he didn't stop. Nobody was running against him anymore and it was just that hunger to win and to just carry on. "That's when I saw it. He just wouldn't stop… it just seemed his limit was above everyone else's." Fast forward seven years, and it's fair to say that remains the case among Arne Slot's current squad. Now 33, Salah was instrumental in guiding Liverpool back to the Premier League title in his manager's first season in English football. And he did so while scoring 29 goals in the league to lift his fourth Golden Boot in England's top flight. Not only that, but the 34 goals he scored in all competitions was the second-highest tally of his career, trailing only the 44 he scored during his maiden campaign on Merseyside. He also added 23 assists in all competitions to bring his tally up to 57 direct goal contributions in 52 appearances. And having played in every single league fixture this term, there appears to be plenty of life in him yet. Fans were elated to see the winger pen a new two-year contract with the club in April, putting to bed any rumours of an exit this summer. Salah was being closely linked with clubs in Saudi Arabia, but the new deal assures he'll be committed to Slot's project until at least 2027. The same can't be said for Alexander-Arnold after he departed in a controversial free transfer to Madrid. The full-back could potentially make his Real debut on Wednesday when they face Saudi side Al-Hilal, one of the clubs linked with signing Salah, at the FIFA Club World Cup. Liverpool won't be at the competition in the United States, handing Salah a chance to properly rest ahead of their league title defence. And the same compliments that marked the speedster out as a special talent nearly a decade ago seemingly still apply today.
