Steven Spielberg once thought he was having a heart attack after suffering a 'full-blown panic attack' while filming Jaws.
The 78-year-old has been behind huge hits over his decades-long career, but shared that his efforts behind the camera for the 1975 shark thriller – which was released 50 years ago today – was among his toughest projects.
The legendary movie followed a star-studded cast led by Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw, as a team on the hunt for a terrifying great white shark after it attacked beachgoers.
The film grossed more than $475million worldwide, and has gone down as one of the biggest blockbusters of all time.
Detailing his experience on set in a new National Geographic special to celebrate the milestone anniversary, titled new Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story, the filmmaker shared that he battled nightmares for 'years' afterwards.
'When the film wrapped in Martha's Vineyard, I had a full-blown panic attack,' he told the cameras. 'I couldn't breathe, I thought I was having a heart attack. I couldn't get a full breath of air.
'I kept going to the bathroom and splashing water on my face. I was shaking. And I was out of it – I was completely out of it.'
Steven and co faced a number of issues during filming, including difficulties with the mechanical shark and going hugely over budget – which didn't help when Hollywood bosses kept a close eye on production.
At the same time, they had to ease simmering tensions between the cast while having to contend with shooting on water for large periods of time – with the filmmaker admitting that he reshot some moments in a crew member's LA pool.
Basically, an actual shark rocking up to shore sounds like it would have been the least of their problems…
Despite only having a few projects under his belt at that point, Steven explained that, as the director, he felt responsible for every single person on set.
'I think it was everything I had experienced on the island…,' he continued. '[I] at least tried to not only hold myself together, I had to hold the crew together.
'I had a great crew, and yet I felt responsible for everybody there. And I felt really responsible for keeping them there for as long as we had to stay. I think I just lost it.'
Although he had nothing to fear, as Jaws premiered to huge acclaim, broke box office records and won three Oscars, Steven still struggled to let his experience go.
In fact, he would sneak on board the Orca boat used in the film when it was eventually moved to the Universal tour, and sometimes 'sob'.
'I had a real tough time when I finished the movie,' he said. 'The success was fantastic but it didn't stop the nightmares, it didn't stop me waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, where the sheets would be soaking wet.
'We didn't have the words PTSD in those days, and I had consistent nightmares about directing Jaws for years afterwards.
'I was still on the movie and the film was never-ending.'
'I had nothing to cry about,' he added. 'The film was a phenomenon, and I'm sitting here shedding tears because I'm not able to divest myself of the experience.

'Jaws was a life-altering experience. On the one hand, it was a traumatizing experience for me that was mostly about survival. And I think all of us feel we survived something.
'Jaws, also, I owe everything to.'

'One of the best horror films' is finally coming to Amazon Prime next week

Nosferatu was released last year, with Bill Skarsgård leading a star-studded cast alongside Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Director Robert Eggers put his own stamp on the Dracula-inspired Gothic tale, following a young woman tortured by a psychic connection to an evil vampire. The scare-fest made a huge splash when it hit the big screen a few months ago, and was branded 'chilling', 'hauntingly beautiful' and 'downright evil' by cinemagoers. It raked more than $181million at the global box office and earned four Oscar nominations for best cinematography, best costume design, best production design and best hair and makeup styling. The film will now be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video from June 27, just in case fans missed it in cinemas, or want another excuse to be terrified. Nosferatu currently commands an impressive critics Rotten Tomatoes score of 84%, compared to an audience ranking of 73%. Jonathan M praised: 'The new Nosferatu was fantastic – beautifully dark atmosphere and amazing performances all around. It stayed true to the spirit of the classic while adding some fresh twists that kept things interesting. 'A couple of scenes felt slightly long, but overall, it's one of the best horror films I've seen lately.' Tyler F said: 'A horror absolute must see. You cannot unsee this movie. It's one of those ones that sticks with you.' 'The best Dracula-related film ever made. Proper Gothic treatment of the film. The gradual introduction of Count Orlok. The attention shifted between characters. It's captivating. Darkness at its finest. A masterpiece.' The official synopsis simply reads: 'Robert Eggers' Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.' However, unpacking his experience on set, Nicholas – who played Thomas Hutter – revealed that the scares weren't just saved for the screen, as he had a terrifying moment on set with his animal co-stars. In a recent interview with Empire magazine, he was questioned on whether he was 'actually freaked out' during filming, and recalled the 'rules' he was given when meeting the Czech Shepherds playing the 'wolves'. 'They were Czech Shepherds, so they weren't wolves but part-wolf. When we met them with the animal handlers, they were like, 'Oh, they're just like dogs,'' he said. 'When we got to set, there was a moment before that scene where I'm running on the spot, trying to get my heart rate up. 'The wolves – it sent them crazy. They'd been told to chase me and then they saw me getting myself fired up, and they were barking, being held back on these leashes. I was like, 'Whoa! Whoooooaaa.' More Trending 'And there was one time doing that shot where I was running – they'd be like, 'Okay, three-two-one, action,' and I would go on three, and [the wolves] would be released on one – and there was one time where I slipped, trying to get out of the window. 'I was like, 'Well, I know these wolves have been released, and I know they're chasing me, but I never asked, like… 'What are they trained to do if they do get to me? What's the end goal here, what if I don't make it out the window??'' 'I remember after that take, [David] being like, 'You pulled a weird face, we can't use that.' That was real! Iconic WWE star's twins, 15, are being 'groomed for family business'

The 60-year-old retired wrestler and current NXT commentator is a mentor on US network A&E's LFG reality show – which returns for a second season this weekend – and it's no surprised his 15-year-old twins are primed to follow in his footsteps. He exclusively told Metro: 'Never say never. My son, he loves professional wrestling. My daughter, she's very, very athletic. I never knew what I was going to do until I got into it, you know?' However, Booker – whose wife is fellow WWE Hall of Famer Sharmell – admitted he might be happier if they work behind the scenes instead, taking over his Reality of Wrestling promotion. 'I'm grooming them to be able to take over the business one day,' he said. 'From a behind the scenes perspective. That's where the money is! Less bumps as well [laughs]. No man, never say never!' If the twins did decided to get into wrestling, they'd have the best coach, with Booker having trained rising star Roxanne Perez, while there have been plans for him to work with Travis Scott to help him prepare for an eventual match. However, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to teaching someone the ropes. 'The first time I got in the ring, it was like deja vu. It seemed like I had been in the ring my whole life,' he recalled. 'Being in the business for 35 years, I got so much like wasted knowledge in my head, I could just pull it up, boom. 'I expect for them to be able to do it as well, and it's just not like that. Everybody is so different as far as the learning curve… When I teach it, I try to have so many different philosophies.' For WWE LFG (Legends & Future Greats), that variety is on full display as Booker joins Bubba Ray Dudley, The Undertaker and Michelle McCool on the panel for the second season in search of WWE's next megastars. Last series, Bubba Ray clashed with his loudmouthed protege BJ Ray, who showed a lot of fire and overconfident. 'It might work out for them on the show, but it's not going to work out in the long run,' Booker said, arguing the need for 'great matches' as well as a strong personality. He added: 'If you can figure that out – BJ Ray, he might have a chance, but if he doesn't figure that part out, he has no chance in hell of making it in this business.' Booker knows his stuff, as his protege Jasper Troy was the men's winner, and has already impressed in the ring with NXT Champion Oba Femi. 'I hate to use the old cliche from from Rocky Balboa, but he had that 'eye of the tiger,'' the veteran chuckled. 'He took it very, very serious. And that's what a lot of these guys don't do.' He explained: 'They're not looking at it like this could be a lifetime job… [or a] once a lifetime opportunity… But Jasper, I'm so proud of that kid.' That's not to say Booker doesn't embrace the larger than life characters, as he noted how the theatrics are the beating heart of the business. 'I'm always performing. It's Shakespeare, it's Romeo and Juliet, it's Phantom of the Opera,' he smiled. 'That's I think about when I think about professional wrestling.' That drama will certainly shine through on the new season of LFG – which is only available in the US, with clips being shared on X worldwide, and the winners already appearing on weekly NXT TV. What can fans expect? 'A lot more drama,' he laughed. 'We're trying to work with these young guys and get them where we need them to be. It's not as easy as one would think.' He added: 'The physical side is is relatively easy, but the mental side of the business is very, very taxing. And I think you guys will see a lot of lot of that this season.' In light of that, Booker shared the best piece of advice he was given by Escape From New York actor and wrestler Ox Baker. More Trending He recalled with a smile: 'He said, 'Kid, you got a lot of talent, but you're going to come up against a lot of obstacles in this business.' And I think he was talking about me being a young black man in the business. 'He didn't say that, but he said, 'You got to figure out a way to go over, around, under, and sometimes you have to go straight through those obstacles.' 'Wow.
