Paramount Declares Comedies Are Back With New ‘Naked Gun' Footage; Trots Out Extended ‘Running Man' Look
With his usual flair, Paramount President of International Theatrical Distribution, Mark Viane, kicked off the studio's CineEurope presentation today with a hysterical video that reimagined him as the head of 'The Paramount Squad,' a reference to the upcoming Naked Gun reboot. Sporting a white wig, Viane was joined by other Par execs including the EMEA team while the mini film also nodded to upcoming studio titles including Smurfs and the latest Spongebob movie, among others. After the video and as he took the stage here, replete in boxers and skirt à la Liam Neeson's Frank Drebin Jr in The Naked Gun, Viane exclaimed, 'Comedies are back!' Neeson introduced an exclusive look at the movie via a video message and cheekily said to exhibitors, 'remember to book my movie — or I am coming for you.' During the presentation, Viane also announced that Paramount will co-produce with Universal Meet the Parents 4, and will handle international distribution. There was also extended Smurfs footage, including the opening sequence, that was introduced by Rihanna who voices Smurfette. The movie kicks off July 16 internationally and goes domestic on July 18. Moving away from comedy and targeting the underserved female audience, a first look at Colleen Hoover adaptation Regretting You was introduced via video by the cast including Allison Williams, Dave Franco, Mckenna Grace and Mason Thames. The story is set against a tragic event that unlocks a series of secrets, lies and regrets. A fall 2025 release is on deck. Also showing up for the first time for exhibitors was Primate, a horror movie about a domesticated chimp gone bonkers. That's swinging into cinemas in 2026. Viane closed out the Par presentation with new extended footage from The Running Man. Glenn Powell, Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo star in the Stephen King chase thriller adaptation from director Edgar Wright. Set in a dystopian America (in the year 2025), the story centers on Ben Richards (Powell), a desperate man who participates in violent reality show in order to win enough money to revive his gravely ill daughter. Powell, Brolin and Domingo sent a video to Barcelona to talk up the film and introduce the footage. Release is on November 7 this year. ‘Meet The Parents 4': Paramount To Co-Produce With Universal & Distribute Internationally
Paramount has come on board to co-produce Meet the Parents 4 with Universal, and will handle international distribution on the latest entry in the $1 billion-plus grossing franchise. Universal has domestic. The film is set to roll out from November 25, 2026. Hamburg, who co-wrote the three previous Meet the Parents movies, is also penning this script. The original cast earlier this month celebrated the franchise's 25th anniversary during the Tribeca Film Festival. Jane Rosenthal and De Niro will produce through their Tribeca Productions. Jay Roach will produce through Delirious Media. Stiller and John Lesher will produce through Red Hour Films. Hamburg will produce through Particular Pictures. The first Meet the Parents grossed more than $330 million at the global box office when it was released in 2000, becoming that year's seventh highest-grossing film worldwide. Its sequels Meet the Fockers (2004) and Little Fockers (2010) were also box office successes. In all, the franchise has grossed $1.13 billion worldwide. Paramount is enjoying the continued global success of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning which this past weekend crossed $500 million worldwide. Its next two major wide releases are Smurfs beginning July 16 overseas and Liam Neeson-starrer The Naked Gun in August. Universal Swoops Into CineEurope With Fresh ‘Jurassic World Rebirth' & ‘Wicked: For Good' Clips; Touts Steven Spielberg & Christopher Nolan Projects
Hot off the nearly $200M global opening of its live-action How to Train Your Dragon, Universal kicked off its CineEurope presentation here in Barcelona today with a different sort of soaring beasts — showing exclusive clips from its upcoming Scarlett Johansson-starrer Jurassic World Rebirth. The Gareth Edwards-directed sci-fi adventure entry in the $6B+ grossing franchise starts rollout on July 2. And, of course, there was plenty of attention paid to Wicked: For Good, the sequel to Jon M. Chu's 2024 $750M global grossing fantasy musical. This included an illuminated green balloon descending from the rafters into the auditorium and an exclusive behind-the-scenes look that was introduced by Chu. Veronica Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution, Universal Pictures International, introduced the show, saying, 'We believe in celebrating the power of cinema and the unparalleled theatrical experience for all types of films, ranging from emotional dramas, to animated event films, daring action blockbusters, inventive horror films and charming romantic comedies.' Citing the upcoming slate from Universal, Illumination, DreamWorks Animation and Focus Features, Kwan Vandenberg said, 'In the next two years, we will deliver you the biggest and most diverse slate of films of any studio with 27 wide releases this year, and our most exciting lineup yet for 2026, which will include films from two of the greatest directors of our time Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan, and three blockbuster animations.' Of the latter, DreamWorks Animation's August release, The Bad Guys 2 zoomed in with an extended exclusive look. Niels Swinkels, EVP & MD, Universal Pictures International noted that Spielberg has wrapped his untitled event film, and that Nolan is hard at work on his epic The Odyssey which is being entirely shot with Imax cameras. Swinkels and Julien Noble, President of International Marketing, Universal Pictures International later had some fun introducing live-action/animated adventure comedy Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie, the big-screen version of Netflix's immensely popular kids series. They showed off an extended trailer. It releases domestically on September 26. Other key titles touted were Bob Odenkirk sequel Nobody 2 and Blumhouse's Five Nights at Freddy's 2, the sequel to 2023's horror hit — which got a new teaser and starts offshore rollout on December 3; M3GAN 2.0, Soulm8te and Black Phone 2 footage was also screened. From Focus, CineEurope got an exclusive look at Yorgos Lanthimos' fall release, Bugonia starring Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone; and a new exclusive trailer for Focus threequel Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, whose first trailer dropped earlier this month and has more views than the combined total of the 2nd film's teaser and trailer. Actor Richard Dreyfuss, who played Hooper in the movie, admitted that Jaws left him with a lasting fear of the ocean, to the point where he still avoids walking into the sea from a beach. Anne Murray digs into the vault for album of decades-old unreleased tracks
TORONTO – Anne Murray is digging into the archives for a new album of previously unreleased songs. The singer announced news of the compilation, 'Here You Are,' on Friday – her 80th birthday. Universal Music Canada says it features 11 songs recorded between 1978 and 1995, an era the label describes as Murray's 'vocal peak.' The disc also includes a cover of the 1983 Bryan Adams hit 'Straight From the Heart.' Universal says the song was initially recorded for Murray's 1984 album 'Heart Over Mind,' and includes background vocals by Murray's daughter Dawn and a pedal steel solo by her nephew, Dale. The project is Murray's 33rd studio album, and is set for release Sept. 5. The first single, 'Rest Easy (In My Love),' was recorded in spring 1989 and originally considered for that year's compilation album, 'Greatest Hits Volume II.' Universal says the eponymous title track, 'Here You Are,' was once in the running for Murray's 1996 self-titled album.
