Mumbai's Ravindra Sante to lead India's mixed disability team on England tour
Ravindra Sante
Exeter: Ravindra Gopinath Sante's journey is a remarkable example that can inspire aspiring cricketers with disabilities across India — proving that dreams can indeed come true.
A paralysed right hand since childhood didn't stop this left-arm spinning allrounder from making a mark in Mumbai's top local tournaments, including the prestigious Kanga League and Times Shield, where he competed and held his own against able-bodied cricketers, some of whom went on to represent Mumbai and India.
In his early days, Sante would travel 116 kilometres daily by local train from Dombivli to Virar to train under Ravindra Patil, assistant and fielding coach of the Indian mixed disability team.
It's been a long journey both on and off the field and today, he stands at the helm of something truly special.

Shubman's Big Test Begins! India's Probable XI & Stokes' Mind Games | ENG vs IND 1st Test Preview
"It's a proud feeling to lead India's mixed disability team," Sante told
Mumbai Mirror
on Thursday.
"It'll be a new and different experience because earlier there were separate teams for different disabilities. This is the first time India is fielding a mixed disability team and it includes players with physical, learning, and hearing/speech impairments. All three disability categories are coming together for the first time."
Reflecting on how far the ecosystem has come, Sante said: 'When I started, we'd travel in unreserved train compartments, often sitting near toilets on the way to national tournaments.
But things have improved tremendously, thanks to the tireless work of people like Ravi Chauhan (General Secretary, Differently-Abled Cricket Council of India). This tour, for instance, has the support of the ECB, ICC, and the BCCI.
We've done well against the England Lions Mixed Disability team in warm-ups and are confident of winning this series.'
Quiz:
Who's that IPL player?
Sante was just six months old when two faulty injections by a doctor paralysed his right arm.
Raised in a modest household, he discovered cricket relatively late. 'I started playing leather-ball cricket while representing KV Pendharkar College. Growing up in Dombivli, we didn't have the kind of facilities kids have today. During one college match, I scored a half-century, and the umpire from the opposing team was so impressed and that's where my journey truly began.
My father, who passed away a decade ago, always supported me.
Like many parents, he never insisted I stick to a regular job,' he recalled.
Sante, now a Central Railway employee and father of two, added: 'Back then, I didn't even know disability cricket existed. One day, a local corporator hosted an exhibition match for differently-abled players. That's where I met Ravi Patil sir. For two to three years after that, I travelled daily to train at his Sainath Cricket Club in Virar. Soon, I was selected for
Maharashtra
, and then for India.'
'We were short one player, so I added him to the Maharashtra squad at the last minute for the nationals. And look at him now,' Patil said with pride.
Sante currently plays for Garware Club House in the Kanga League and Cosmopolitan Shield, and for Mumbai Sports Association, a team under Central Railway in the Times Shield 'C' Division.
Having overcome personal adversity, it's no surprise Sante draws inspiration from India's 2011 World Cup hero,
Yuvraj Singh
. 'I loved his fielding, his fighting spirit, and his unbelievable performance during the 2011 World Cup, even while battling cancer. I'll always cherish meeting Yuvraj sir at his home in Gurgaon, just before our tour to Afghanistan in 2016,' Sante fondly shared.

Leeds 2002 Meets 2025: Sachin Tendulkar And Sourav Ganguly Makes Major Prediction For India In First Test Against England
The Indian batters dominated on the first day of the First Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Skipper Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored brilliant hundreds with Gill still unbeaten on the crease. Vice-Captain Rishab Pant also scored an attacking 65 runs and is still on the crease. India's Legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar praised the team's stellar batting through a tweet mentioning the 2002 Leeds Test. The Star's tweet went viral and his batting partner Sourav Ganguly replied to his tweet dropping a major prediction. After the end of the first day's play in the Leeds Test between England and India, Sachin Tendulkar tweeted on X: "The solid foundation laid by KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal made it a good day for India. Congratulations to Yashasvi and Shubman Gill for their magnificent centuries. Rishabh Pant's contribution was equally important for the team. India's batting reminded me of the 2002 Headingley Test, when Rahul, Sourav Ganguly, and I scored centuries in the first innings, and we won the Test. Today, Yashasvi and Shubman have done their job. Who will score the third century this time?"Replying to the tweet, Ganguly predicted that not just three but four Indian players could hit a century for India with Rishabh Pant batting at a fine 65 while Karun Nair yet to come at 6."Hi Champ .. this time it could be 4 .. on this good surface .. pant and may be karun .. the surface on day 1 in 2002 .. was a bit different then this," wrote about the Test match played at Headingley in 2002, Rahul Dravid played an innings of 148 runs in that match. IND vs ENG: Stuart Broad rips into England bowlers, says 'they didn't quite get it right'
Ben Stokes (AP Photo) NEW DELHI: Shubman Gill began his tenure as India's Test captain with a brilliant unbeaten century, following a composed ton by Yashasvi Jaiswal , as India took control on Day 1 of the opening Test against England at Headingley on Friday. After being put into bat by England skipper Ben Stokes , India closed the day in a dominant position at 359 for 3 in this five-Test series opener. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Gill remained unbeaten on 127 at stumps, having forged a crucial 129-run partnership for the third wicket with Jaiswal, who was dismissed for 101 shortly after tea. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant added late momentum with a typically aggressive knock, finishing the day on 65 not out. His innings included a remarkable swatted six off Chris Woakes in the final over of the day, as he and his new captain stitched an unbroken 138-run stand to further dent England's hopes. Former England pacer Stuart Broad criticised the home team's bowling effort, suggesting they failed to execute their plans properly. 'It didn't feel like the England bowlers fully executed their plans. I don't think they got it quite right — but that doesn't mean they can't do so this morning and turn the game around," Broad told Sky Sports Cricket. 'I think when the bowlers went full, they went a bit too full. And I feel England could have used a straighter field — maybe a straight mid-off, a straight mid-on, and an extra cover instead of a backward point. To me, backward point only comes into play if the ball is hit directly at it. Anywhere either side, and it's four. So I'd say, get rid of the backward point, bring in an extra cover, and encourage the batters to play with a straighter bat, especially if you're bowling that slightly fuller length,' he explained. Dominant India on Day 1! Jaiswal & Gill Hit Centuries | ENG vs IND 1st Test - Sahil from Leeds Stokes' decision to bowl first may have been influenced by the fact that the last six Tests at Headingley were all won by teams batting second. However, with veteran pacers James Anderson and Stuart Broad retired, and both Jofra Archer and Mark Wood sidelined due to injury, England's attack struggled on a pitch that offered little help under increasingly bright skies. Woakes, recalled in place of the injured Gus Atkinson, took the new ball but went wicketless in his 19 overs, conceding 89 runs. Stokes was the most successful bowler on the day, finishing with figures of 2 for 43 from 13 overs. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story. Watch Episode 1 here
