Gill remained unbeaten on 127 at stumps, having forged a crucial 129-run partnership for the third wicket with Jaiswal, who was dismissed for 101 shortly after tea.
Wicketkeeper-batter
Rishabh Pant
added late momentum with a typically aggressive knock, finishing the day on 65 not out. His innings included a remarkable swatted six off
Chris Woakes
in the final over of the day, as he and his new captain stitched an unbroken 138-run stand to further dent England's hopes.
Former England pacer
Stuart Broad
criticised the home team's bowling effort, suggesting they failed to execute their plans properly.
'It didn't feel like the England bowlers fully executed their plans. I don't think they got it quite right — but that doesn't mean they can't do so this morning and turn the game around," Broad told Sky Sports Cricket.
'I think when the bowlers went full, they went a bit too full. And I feel England could have used a straighter field — maybe a straight mid-off, a straight mid-on, and an extra cover instead of a backward point.
To me, backward point only comes into play if the ball is hit directly at it. Anywhere either side, and it's four. So I'd say, get rid of the backward point, bring in an extra cover, and encourage the batters to play with a straighter bat, especially if you're bowling that slightly fuller length,' he explained.

Stokes' decision to bowl first may have been influenced by the fact that the last six Tests at Headingley were all won by teams batting second. However, with veteran pacers James Anderson and Stuart Broad retired, and both Jofra Archer and Mark Wood sidelined due to injury, England's attack struggled on a pitch that offered little help under increasingly bright skies.
Woakes, recalled in place of the injured Gus Atkinson, took the new ball but went wicketless in his 19 overs, conceding 89 runs. Stokes was the most successful bowler on the day, finishing with figures of 2 for 43 from 13 overs.

'Every player speeds': Former NFL player Asante Samuel defends Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders amid speeding controversies
Shedeur Sanders (via Getty Images) Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders is in the sights after being cited for two separate speeding infractions in June, calling his maturity and readiness for the NFL into question. But amid the criticism, one-time vocal critic of Deion Sanders and former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel stepped forward to openly defend the young quarterback, saying that Sanders is being targeted simply because of his surname. Shedeur Sanders' off-field problems ignite backlash—and surprising backing The month of June has not been working out well for Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders, but not for anything on the gridiron. Shedeur Sanders was cited twice for two different speeding offenses: once for driving 91 mph in a 65 zone on June 5 and again for going 101 mph in a 60 zone just days after. To make things worse, Shedeur Sanders allegedly failed to show up for the first offense court hearing. But amid all the criticism, there was one voice that emerged in defense of Sanders: ex-NFL Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel. On social media, Asante Samuel delivered a simple refutation of the criticism levied at Shedeur Sanders. "Every player speeds," Asante Samuel wrote. "This is normal athlete behavior, but because his last name is Sanders, the haters want to bring as much negative attention as possible. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologists: Losing a Hanging Tummy Comes Down To This 1 Thing Health Wellness Journal Watch More Undo I never seen a community want to tear a player down like we are witnessing." Asante Defends Shedeur Sanders Verbiage/Terminology Dispute Samuel's comments are especially compelling with his own past public feud with Deion Sanders, Shedeur's father and a Pro Football Hall of Famer. The two had a digital falling out in previous years but have since made amends, making Samuel's speaking out on Shedeur's behalf especially significant. Shedeur Sanders himself has already pushed back against the criticism, admitting his transgressions in an interview at tight end David Njoku's charity softball game. "I made some wrong choices personally, and I can own up to them," Sanders was heard saying on video, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. "I made some, you know, not great choices… I learned." But they don't define his future. His duty and the surprising populist support of a player such as Asante Samuel show that Sanders does not lack his fans. It is to be seen how he handles adversity outside the game, which may be just as crucial to his long-term NFL career. Bizarre! Fan shows up with two cobras and a monkey during Test match
Image credit: IANS Fans and players at the Galle International Stadium witnessed a sight rarely, if ever, seen during a cricket match. On the final day of the first Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, amidst the intense on-field action, a television cameraman zoomed in on a unique spectator — a snake charmer enjoying the game with two cobras and a monkey by his side, all seemingly engrossed in the cricketing drama. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh share a quirky cricketing rivalry often dubbed the 'Naagin (Cobra) Derby', but few could have imagined the nickname manifesting so literally at the ground. The first Test of the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle between the two sides ultimately ended in a tense draw, punctuated by a dramatic final session. Set a target of 296 in 37 overs, Sri Lanka opted for survival over pursuit and closed at 72/4, fending off a fierce spin burst from Taijul Islam, who finished with 3/23. His wickets included veterans Angelo Mathews—playing his final Test—and Dinesh Chandimal. Despite the draw, the contest was filled with drama and bold decisions. After a two-and-a-half-hour rain delay post-lunch, Bangladesh surprised many by choosing to continue batting rather than declare immediately. Their captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, sitting on 96, went on to complete his second century of the match, scoring 109* and propelling Bangladesh to 285/6 declared. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Laxmi Ji Idol For Wealth, Peace & Happiness Luxeartisanship Shop Now Undo However, this delayed declaration cost them valuable overs — they had just 37 to bowl at Sri Lanka instead of nearly 50. Broad Makes 1st Test Prediction: 'Don't Think England Will Find Batting...'
Last Updated: Stuart Broad feels England will face tougher batting conditions than India in the first Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test. Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad believes the hosts will face more challenging batting conditions compared to India in the ongoing first Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Headingley. India were bowled out for 471 in 113 overs, with captain Shubman Gill (147), vice-captain Rishabh Pant (134), and Yashasvi Jaiswal (101). For England, captain Ben Stokes (4/66) and Josh Tongue (4/86) were the standout bowlers, playing a crucial role in ensuring India lost their last seven wickets for just 41 runs. 'Because if Ben Stokes can get it to swing and seam, then Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah can too. So, I don't think England will find batting quite as easy as the Indian batters did yesterday," Broad was quoted as saying on JioHotstar. Broad also commented on Stokes' bowling performance this home summer after recovering from hamstring surgery. 'Ben Stokes is a great character — in his mind, he never feels like he's out of the game. He never lets his brain turn negative or think he's defeated or beaten. He likes to lead from the front, and he's grown as a captain in that way." 'He's like: 'Give me the ball. I'll show you how to do it — this is how I want us to go about our business.' And let us remember — Ben Stokes is a cricketer who hasn't played much cricket this year, and yet he comes back and hits the straps straight away. He's looked like England's best bowler by far. Yes, he is their most experienced bowler and also looked as their best bowler, and that's a concern for England a little," he added. Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar was also impressed with Stokes' bowling, which kept England in the game. 'Ben Stokes, the bowler — now, he's just in a different league. In terms of getting wickets, reading the batter, and manufacturing these great moments for his side, something that others just aren't able to do. That's the great thing about Ben Stokes. When he's fit as a bowler, this is what he brings. Because this is something only he can pull off." (With inputs from IANS) First Published: June 21, 2025, 20:33 IST
