LABUAN: The historical site of the Labuan Botanical Garden is set to undergo a significant facelift with an RM5 million allocation recently approved by the National Landscape Department. Labuan Corporation Chief Executive Officer Mohd Sukuran Taib said the revitalisation project, scheduled to commence early next year, will focus on enhancing public amenities and preserving the garden's cultural and ecological value.
Advertisement 'We are grateful for the RM5 million funding which will allow us to improve the infrastructure and overall experience at one of Labuan's most iconic landmarks,' he said, Friday. Sukuran said among the key upgrades include the improvement of the existing concreted track, repair of the ageing gazebo and its platform, enhancement of the information centre and guard house, as well as the construction of a new open wall to improve visitor flow and aesthetics. He said Labuan Corporation would also provide input and recommendations on the facilities requiring improvements to ensure the development meets the needs of the public and aligns with the garden's historical significance. 'The Labuan Botanical Garden is not just a recreational space but also a living heritage. The planned upgrades will ensure it continues to serve future generations,' he said. He noted that documentation and planning works are currently underway and expected to be finalised this year, paving the way for the project implementation in early 2026. The Labuan Botanical Garden, locally known as Bumbung 12, began as the grounds of the Government House, the official residence for Labuan's early governors, which was built in 1852. This grand structure was eventually destroyed during World War II, leaving only the water storage tank. The gardens themselves are credited to Sir Hugh Low, the Colonial Secretary of Labuan, who is also known for making the first documented ascent of Mount Kinabalu. He is also said to have planted many of the older trees within the park. In 2001, the Labuan Corporation developed the gardens into a recreation park. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ringgit expected to stay defensive due to middle east conflict

KUALA LUMPUR:The ringgit is expected to stay defensive within a tight range next week, as traders and investors will continue to observe the military conflict in the Middle East, said an analyst. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said that the Israel-Iran war continues to take centre stage as the United States is still weighing its options to participate in the conflict. "White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt indicated that President Donald Trump will make his decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks. The US Dollar Index (DXY) fell 0.22 per cent to 98.691 points. "Apart from that, Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation data for May 2025 will also be released next week. On that note, ringgit could stay within a range of RM4.24 to RM4.25 next week,' he told Bernama. For the week just ended, the ringgit gave up its earlier gains at the beginning of the week as escalating geopolitical concerns spurred demand for the safe-haven US dollar. However, the market showed a slight sign of recovery at the end of the week, as some investors took the opportunity to return to emerging currencies due to the latest White House announcement regarding the ongoing Iran-Israel war. The ringgit ended the week easier against the greenback, closing at 4.2505/2565 on Friday from 4.2435/2480 a week earlier. The local note traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit rose vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.9245/9289 from 2.9448/9482 at Friday's close, went up against the British pound to 5.7356/7437 from 5.7482/7543 previously, but depreciated versus the euro to 4.9000/9069 from 4.8906/8958 at the end of last week. The ringgit traded mostly higher against ASEAN currencies. The local note declined against the Singapore dollar to 3.3088/3140 on Friday from 3.3077/3118 in the previous week, advanced versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.2/259.7 from 260.2/260.6 previously, and strengthened versus the Thai baht to 12.9727/9969 from 13.0807/1018 last week. Meanwhile, the ringgit also rose against the Philippine peso at 7.43/7.45 compared to 7.55/7.56 previously. - Bernama

MoF: SST registration for expanded scope starts August 1

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has announced that new registration applications in relation to the expansion of the service tax scope and the revision of the sales tax rate, effective from July 1, 2025, can be made starting from Aug 1, 2025. For existing registered persons, applications for the addition of new services under the expansion of the service tax scope and tariff codes under the revision of the sales tax rate, which is effective from July 1, 2025, can be submitted beginning June 24, 2025, the ministry said in a post on X today. On June 9, the government announced a targeted review of the sales tax rate and an expansion of the service tax scope, both of which will take effect from July 1. The sales tax rate remains unchanged for essential goods, while a five or 10 per cent rate will be imposed on selected items. Meanwhile, the scope of the service tax will be expanded to include six new services: leasing or rental, construction, finance, private healthcare, education, and beauty services. Treasury secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican reportedly said that revenue from the Sales and Service Tax (SST) collection is expected to increase by RM5 billion in 2025 and by RM10 billion in 2026, following the implementation of the SST revised and expanded scope starting next month.
