Ringgit expected to stay defensive due to middle east conflict

The Star20 hours ago

KUALA LUMPUR:The ringgit is expected to stay defensive within a tight range next week, as traders and investors will continue to observe the military conflict in the Middle East, said an analyst.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said that the Israel-Iran war continues to take centre stage as the United States is still weighing its options to participate in the conflict.
"White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt indicated that President Donald Trump will make his decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks. The US Dollar Index (DXY) fell 0.22 per cent to 98.691 points.
"Apart from that, Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation data for May 2025 will also be released next week. On that note, ringgit could stay within a range of RM4.24 to RM4.25 next week,' he told Bernama.
For the week just ended, the ringgit gave up its earlier gains at the beginning of the week as escalating geopolitical concerns spurred demand for the safe-haven US dollar.
However, the market showed a slight sign of recovery at the end of the week, as some investors took the opportunity to return to emerging currencies due to the latest White House announcement regarding the ongoing Iran-Israel war.
The ringgit ended the week easier against the greenback, closing at 4.2505/2565 on Friday from 4.2435/2480 a week earlier.
The local note traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies.
The ringgit rose vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.9245/9289 from 2.9448/9482 at Friday's close, went up against the British pound to 5.7356/7437 from 5.7482/7543 previously, but depreciated versus the euro to 4.9000/9069 from 4.8906/8958 at the end of last week.
The ringgit traded mostly higher against ASEAN currencies.
The local note declined against the Singapore dollar to 3.3088/3140 on Friday from 3.3077/3118 in the previous week, advanced versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.2/259.7 from 260.2/260.6 previously, and strengthened versus the Thai baht to 12.9727/9969 from 13.0807/1018 last week.
Meanwhile, the ringgit also rose against the Philippine peso at 7.43/7.45 compared to 7.55/7.56 previously. - Bernama

KESUMA Urges Workers Paid Below RM1,700 To Report To Labour Dept

PUTRAJAYA, June 23 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) has urged employees earning less than the RM1,700 minimum wage to promptly lodge a complaint with the Department of Labour (JTK). It said all parties are required to comply with minimum wage regulations to protect the welfare and rights of workers in the country and warned that legal action would be taken against any violation of the National Wages Consultative Council Act 2011 (Act 732). Referring to a media report alleging that tour bus drivers were only receiving a basic salary of RM700 a month without fixed allowances, the ministry explained that under the Minimum Wages Order (PGM) 2024, which is currently in force, employers are required to ensure that workers receive a minimum wage of RM1,700 per month, regardless of whether this is through a basic salary structure or total monthly earnings. 'If the employer stipulates a basic salary in the contract of service, the rate must not be less than the prevailing minimum wage. 'If the contract does not state a basic salary, the employer must ensure that the monthly wage paid is not less than the prevailing minimum wage, excluding other allowances. PGM 2024 also applies to part-time workers,' it said in a statement today. KESUMA said JTK will step up monitoring and enforcement action on complaints or wage deduction violations that contravene the PGM. If a worker's complaint is upheld in court, the employer may be ordered to pay the wage difference and any affected allowances, in accordance with Section 44 of Act 732. A news portal on June 21 reported that express and tour bus drivers were earning as little as RM700 in basic salary per month, with some not receiving any base pay at all. The situation has reportedly forced them to rely on travel allowances and overtime just to make ends meet, sacrificing rest days and working nearly every day.

Indonesia's Pertamina to reroute oil shipments via Oman, India if Hormuz closes amid Iran-US tensions

JAKARTA, June 23 — Indonesia's state-owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina will change its oil transportation routes to safer shipping lanes, such as via Oman or India, if the Strait of Hormuz is shut down, a spokesperson said on Monday. Fadjar Djoko Santoso, vice president of corporate communications at PT Pertamina, said the firm's vessels would use alternative shipping routes that ensure the safety of both ships and crew, reported Xinhua. Santoso made the statement following the approval by Iran's parliament of a possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz to shipping activities, in response to US strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities. 'Pertamina has anticipated this by securing our ships and diverting routes to safe passages via Oman and India,' he told reporters. The spokesperson added that the domestic crude oil supply for production remains sufficient and secure. 'In general, our crude supply is still under control,' he said. — Bernama-Xinhua
