Amazon Prime fans have days to binge 'best sci-fi series in years'

Metro28-04-2025

Amazon Prime Video fans only have a few days left if they want to watch a show hailed by fans as 'one of the very best Sci-Fi shows' in a long time.
Ascension, which first aired in 2014 with six 45-minute episodes, will be leaving the streamer in just three days.
The synopsis on Prime reads: 'In 1963, the U.S. government launched a covert space mission sending hundreds of men, women and children on a century-long voyage aboard the starship Ascension to populate a new world.
'Nearly 50 years into the journey, as they approach the point of no return, a mysterious murder of a young woman causes the ship's population to question the true nature of their mission.'
Despite just a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Ascension has delighted fans, with more people discovering the show in the years since it aired.
'One of the very best Sci-Fi shows I've seen in years. Every episode changes what you think is going on and reveals another layer,' wrote James Newton in a Google review.

He added: 'It does vear into fantasy a bit at the end, and possibly religion (but not in the traditional sense) but the bulk of the show is so good, it more than makes up for the ending. (sic)'
Another user, ömer ünal, compared it to The Truman Show, insisting while there were some 'good sociology ideas', they 'probably wouldn't have worked out that way'.
They added: 'Vintage look is awesome. Acting… not good in total, but most series are that way anyway. Should have had a second season. I liked it.'
Plenty of fans complained that the show ended without a satisfying ending, with Brian Schmidt warning in his Google review: 'Be careful… don't be like me and not know that they did not finish the series.
'It is a show that grabs your attention, and each episode leaves you wanting the next. The idea and premise of the show is very interesting. Again, be careful if you start, you won't stop until there is no more and you will be wanting more!'
User Chris Hanna praised the show as a 'great series', but they were 'very sad' there was only six episodes, given the 'interesting' subplots, adding: 'Great to watch on a rainy day when you just want to vedge. (sic)'
Another fan, with the username Just Me, was furious and being 'left hanging', as they urged someone to give the show new life.
'I think they should bring it back and at least finish out the series. Give us an ending,' they said. 'We need answers. So many shows have just stopped and left us all hanging in mid air.'
Sadly, in 2015 SyFy made it clear they wouldn't be looking into more episodes. More Trending
They said at the time: 'We were very happy with Ascension as an event series, but with so much high profile development in the works, we have decided not to pursue a full series.'
Ascension starred Battlestar Galactica actress Tricia Helfer as power broker Viondra Denninger, and Brian Von Holt as Viondra's husband Captain William Denninger.
Gil Bellows played Harris Enzmann, son of Ascension mission founder Abraham Enzmann, while Rescue Me's Andrea Roth appeared as the ship's chief medical officer Dr. Juliet Bryce.

Sunday Brunch viewers welcome Tim Lovejoy's replacement's 'feminine energy'

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Tim Lovejoy has stepped down from hosting Sunday Brunch after 13 years and fans are already loving his replacement. The 57-year-old presenter announced he would be taking a break from the Sunday food and talk show, which he has starred on since 2012. Long-time co-host Simon Rimmer will instead be joined by a fresh-faced TV star who is already being praised for bringing some 'feminine energy'. Reality TV icon, radio presenter and beloved Geordie Shore legend, Vicky Pattison, is taking on the job. She rocked a slicked-back ponytail and a yellow button-up dress for her first day as official co-host, beaming as she stepped up to the challenge. After dancing during the intro, Vicky, 37, declared she was so excited to be hosting, she was 'buzzing like an old fridge'. 'I HAVE SOME EXCITING NEWS!!!!' wrote Vicky on Instagram when she announced the news, days before her debut. She continued: 'As a long time friend of @sundaybrunchc4 it is an absolute HONOUR to be wearing a slightly different hat this week! I will be joining my good pal @rimmersimon as his cohost while the lovely @timlovejoy_official has a very well deserved break!!! 🩷😍 'I am buzzing like an old fridge to chat to all of our gorgeous guests, eat some delicious food and hopefully give anyone watching and nursing a hangover a bit of light comedy reprieve 😂 'See you bright and early Sunday my loves… and wish me luck 💜🥹.' Along with the message, Vicky shared snaps of herself on the Channel 4 show over the years plus some backstage memories. Her news was met with overwhelming positivity from fans and famous friends, as Chloe Burrows commented applause and heart emojis. 'Omg I'm SO excited for this girl 😍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻amazing news,' said internet star Charley Marlowe as Myleene Klass sent applause emojis. 'Absolutely brilliant Vicky well done!!!! 👏❤️🙌,' wrote Celebs Go Dating expert Anna Williamson. Steph McGovern added: 'Congratulations! You're gonna have a right laugh with our Rimmer! 😍😍.' Over on X, her first appearance gained a fair amount of praise with SpiritWalkTalk saying: 'Joke about Vicki all you want, but its good to have some feminine energy co-presenting and female POV on the sofa while chatting with the guests.' TashaConnor shared: 'Haters going to hate but I am loving @VickyPattison on Sunday Brunch! Such a breath of fresh wine!' More Trending Sullivan11 said: 'It's great to see @VickyPattison hosting the show today, she's amazing, hopefully she'll be on again.' There were some who weren't so pleased, with some asking if she was 'drunk' after a glass of wine and complaining they 'can't understand' her accent. Many complaints came from those upset that Rosie Jones was also on the show, which the comedian has regularly responded to. Last year, when she was announced for Taskmaster, Rosie's not-so-subtle reply was simply to stick up her middle finger to the haters. Got a story? Callum Turner in awe of fiancée Dua Lipa during 'dream' Wembley shows

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Callum Turner couldn't keep his eyes off his future wife as she took to the stage for two back-to-back sold out shows at London's Wembley Stadium. Dua Lipa took to the stage on Friday and Saturday for two shows, the first of the UK leg of her highly anticipated 75+ date Radical Optimism Tour, playing to 150,000 fans in the capital. In the crowd to support the 29 year old during her jaw-dropping performances were her family members, including dad Dukagjin, sister Rina and brother Gjin, as well as her actor fiancé Callum, who was seen dancing the night away. When the singer wrapped up her performance on Friday night, the Fantastic Beasts star said from the VIP area: 'She was incredible. She's just amazing.' The 23-song set opened with her hit single Training Season followed by fan favourites including Break My Heart, One Kiss and Whatcha Doing. She also treated fans to a rare performance of Hotter Than Hell, fitting for a scorching hot night in London. She introduced the song by saying : ' This is the song that got me signed, and it's the song that started everything. With weather like this, there's only one song I could do.' Throughout the night, Dua stunned in an array of dazzling outfits as she performed, including a custom black Chanel bodysuit adorned with gold chains, a faithful homage to a 1992 couture original, during her impressive encore. On Friday fans were treated to a surprise appearance from Jamiroquai to perform Virtual Insanity during a special moment for the singer. Bringing him out on stage, she remarked: 'This is someone who really inspired me when I first started out. 'Someone who I feel like is a massive trailblazer in music and has kind of paved the way.' On Saturday night the pop sensation thrilled the crowd when she introduced Charli XCX with a cheeky shoutout. She said: 'So this next song, I thought I'd bring a friend out. Let me tell you, she is the biggest brat. Give it up for Charli XCX!' It's been a whirlwind few months for the singer, including a proposal from Callum, which she confirmed took place last year. Months after teasing fans by wearing a ring on her engagement finger, she confirmed in an interview with British Vogue that she and Callum, 35, are set to tie the knot. More Trending 'Yeah, we're engaged,' last year's Glastonbury headliner cooly shared. 'It's very exciting. This decision to grow old together, to see a life and just, I don't know, be best friends forever – it's a really special feeling.' Dua revealed that Callum popped the question with a custom-made ring, which he had consulted with her sister Rina over. 'I'm obsessed with it,' she continued. 'It's so me. It's nice to know the person that you're going to spend the rest of your life with knows you very well.' The happy couple began dating in January 2024 and made their relationship Instagram official in July. Got a story? Most disastrous WWE match ever when Undertaker almost died on live TV

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The Undertaker has been involved in some of WWE's greatest moments in history, with an almost unrivalled legacy. However, the decorated legend almost died in the middle of the ring during one of the wrestling world's most disastrous matches against fellow Hall of Famer Goldberg. Back in 2019, the two WWE icons faced off in the searing Saudi Arabia heat in the main event of Super ShowDown in a bout which fans, and the stars themselves, would rather forget. Goldberg collided with the steel corner early on and appeared to suffer a concussion, and almost dropped Undertaker on his head when he hoisted him up for his signature Jackhammer move. 'I was two inches away from making my wife a widow, and my kids fatherless,' Undertaker revealed in 2020's The Last Ride documentary. Fans watching were incredibly nervous, and referee Mike Chioda had a huge call to make at the massive stadium show. 'I almost had to call an audible [to end the match],' he exclusively told Metro in 2021. 'It went downhill after Goldberg got gashed open in the turnbuckle, got concussed. 'He was badly concussed and he got through the match, but barely. That's when I was kinda worried.' He recalled seeing both superstars 'almost break their necks' with the Jackhammer attempt, and veteran referee Chioda was waiting to see if there were any instructions to end the bout in his earpiece. He added: 'I was waiting to hear back from somebody to say, 'should I call this match or not because he's not doing good at all?' ' A few months after the bout, in October 2019, Goldberg – who will be in action for his retirement match against World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER on July 12 – defended his performance in light of the injury. 'When I know the whole deal and everything, it's like, come on guys. Give me a break – I knocked myself out, dude,' he told Metro during an event in Los Angeles. 'Now let me see you walk down the street – let alone pick up a 320lbs dude – when you're knocked out.' Goldberg has said in the past that Chioda repeatedly checked on him, while the former WWE official noted that Undertaker had the final say about whether to continue or not. 'I would definitely listen to Undertaker. If he told me to do something, it'd be done, and then we'd have to take back there. It would be done,' he said, while pointing out the money at stake. As well as WWE being paid huge sums for the Saudi Arabia events, it's been reported that both men received seven figure paydays for the match. 'You ain't stopping a match like that unless you're told to,' Chioda laughed during another conversation with Metro in January this year. Things could have been very different, with former WWE superstar Elias – who know works for TNA Wrestling as Elijah – originally planned as Undertaker's opponent for the show. He exclusively told Metro in 2024: 'I can remember Vince [McMahon] said, 'Hey, you're gonna be working with Taker'. Taker pulled me aside, he's like, 'Hey, man, we're gonna go do some business at Saudi, we're gonna have some fun.' ' Plans changed, with Goldberg drafted in for what Elias referred to as an 'infamous match'. 'My personal opinion is, it would have went way better with me and [Undertaker] and a lot safer, probably,' he added. 'But, you know, that's how history goes sometimes.' The match went the way it did, finishing in just under 10 minutes with both men managing to walk away relatively unscathed, but both with a point to prove. 'It was very important to nobody but me,' Goldberg said of the wanting to rebuild his reputation. 'People were very critical of me, and I'll be honest, I never really respond to it.' A few weeks later, he faced off with Dolph Ziggler, now known as Nic Nemeth in TNA, in a dominant bout with the aim of getting back some 'self-confidence'. Metro's WWE expert Alistair McGeorge reflects on the match and its fallout… Even going into the match, Goldberg and The Undertaker had their work cut out for them, with the Dead Man being honest about his own physical limitations at the time, while his opponent was never known for five star matches. It was evident things had gone south quickly when Goldberg hit his head in the corner, and I can still remember panicking as he struggled to get 'Taker up for the Jackhammer. The vitriol online was predictable but intense, and it's safe to say the bout is remembered for all the wrong reasons. Thankfully, both men were able to atone for the match, with Goldberg looking more like his intense old self when he beat Ziggler a couple of months later at SummerSlam. His output since then has been mixed, but a final match next month against GUNTHER at Saturday Night's Main Event is the perfect way for him to go out. For Undertaker, he ended his career a year after the Goldberg match, beating AJ Styles in the cinematic Boneyard Match – a tonne of fun to watch as a fan, and a befitting end to his legendary career. 'Not for anyone else,' he pointed out. 'But I just needed to go out there and go through the motions, and know just 'cause you stumble once, [it] doesn't define you.' He added: 'It's a blessing and it's a curse. I'm never happy, but I'm always striving to be better than anybody else… [The Ziggler match] helped me out a lot.' Similarly, Undertaker didn't want to retire after the Goldberg match, and it wasn't until his cinematic horror movie-esque Boneyard Match with AJ Styles at WrestleMania in April 2020 that he found his closure. 'I was very proud of the match and what we were able to do,' he exclusively told Metro in May 2023. 'I wasn't mentally ready to retire, but I knew my body was getting to the point that I needed to,' he recalled. Around 10 months after the Goldberg match, Undertaker realised in a 'moment of clarity' he would have to call time on his career. More Trending 'It was about 4 in the morning and we were between one fight scene and another. My back is completely locked up, I've got pain shooting down my legs. That's when I knew I was done, I was for sure, 100% done,' he said. 'It was physical, we did some really big stunts, but I shouldn't have felt, at that point, the way that I did. It was just that moment of clarity… ''Let's finish it, enjoy what you're gonna do here because this is it.' I'm really proud of what we did in that match, but yeah, that was the moment that I knew it was all over.' View More » All WWE events are available to stream on Netflix. Got a story?
