Sleep experts say we should be washing bed sheets more than we think

Many individuals put off washing their bed sheets, as they take up a lot of space in the washing machine and often require higher wash temperatures than other fabrics. However, with each use, bedding accumulates dead skin and dirt that may not be immediately visible.
Given that the average person spends nearly a third of their life sleeping, regular washing is crucial for maintaining good sleep hygiene. Experts at the Sleep Foundation suggest that most people do not wash their sheets frequently enough.
They state: "Even after a few days, bed sheets can accumulate significant amounts of dirt, dead skin cells, body oils, sweat, and dust mites - including their carcasses and faecal matter."
Dust mites multiply rapidly, feeding exclusively on dead skin cells. Tens of thousands of dust mites can inhabit your mattress and bedding at any given time, and washing sheets regularly is the most effective way to eliminate them.
The Sleep Foundation recommends that people wash their sheets at least once per week. However, this may need to be increased based on other factors: "Those who share their bed with a pet should clean their sheets every three to four days", urged the sleep experts, reports the Express.
Moreover, individuals who experience allergies or night sweats should wash their sheets more frequently. Cleaning enthusiast and author of Live, Laugh, Laundry, Laura Mountford (@Lauracleanaholic) has revealed that hot weather means bedding will become dirtier more quickly.
She recommends washing pillowcases, duvet covers and sheets twice weekly during the summertime. Laura remarks that, contrary to what many believe, this task is easier than expected due to the efficacy of modern detergents; high-temperature washes are no longer necessary.
She asserts that with high-quality detergents, you can achieve a thorough clean even on cool cycles as low as 20 degrees. If you're still sceptical about washing at such low temperatures, adding a laundry cleanser can help kill bacteria and viruses.
While in-wash scent boosters may extend the freshness of laundry, many professionals concur that air-drying your bedding is equally effective and chemical-free.
Lenor's team of laundry experts further explains that line-dried linens acquire a distinctive fragrance from the photochemical reaction that occurs as solar rays meet wet fabric. They stated: "Hung outside, the ultraviolet light from the sun kills bacteria effectively in your laundry."
How to wash bed sheets
No matter the frequency of washing, it's crucial to always consult and adhere to the care instructions found on the label.
Generally, bedding should be washed in warm water, avoiding hot water, which can damage delicate fabrics.
Use a sheets or normal cycle on your washing machine, and consider a gentle cycle for delicate fabrics like silk or bamboo.
Avoid overloading the washer, and wash sheets separately or with similar fabrics to ensure proper cleaning and hygiene.

And if you're in need of a pre-workout boost or simply want to kick-start your day on a high note, then you'll want to try these out. All you have to do is take 100g of ginger, peel them and slice them very thinly. According to the experts at BBC Good Food, ginger is packed with anti-inflammatory properties, and studies indicate that it may help lower blood pressure as well. ‌ Ginger not only acts as a way to eliminate gas from your digestive system, but also soothes the intestinal tract. For a healthy boost, toss some ginger into a blender followed by 300ml of beetroot juice. The expert suggests that this juice is packed with nitrates which can enhance blood flow and stamina. ‌ Next, squeeze in the juice of one lemon, brimming with vitamin C that's crucial for cell health, radiant skin, strong bones, and healing wounds, according to the NHS. Blitz it all together to make six invigorating shots of this juice. The expert added: "We're not straining because we want to keep that prebiotic fibre." If you're looking for another energising drink post-exercise, the gut health guru shared a recipe for turmeric shots, noting: "Turmeric contains curcumin, which is anti-inflammatory, so it's great to take post-workout." ‌ To whip up this recipe, start with 100g of fresh turmeric, peeled and prepped for the blender. Grab 100g of peeled chopped ginger and 300ml of pineapple juice as well. The expert explained that pineapple juice is full of digestive enzymes and essential vitamin C. Jordan added: "Don't forget to add black pepper to activate the curcumin." Blending everything, he raved: "These will save your gut, your immune system and your bank account."

The beach towels will be packed and the airport taxi will be booked - but it is important to keep in mind the risks of heading abroad, particularly regarding your health. Certain viruses or diseases are more prevalent in some countries than in others due to factors like lifestyle and environmental conditions. Rabies, for example, has been wiped out in the UK, but can still crop up elsewhere. ‌ This week, a British woman died of rabies after being scratched by a stray dog in Morocco, leading the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to issue urgent warnings for those visiting countries where the virus is common. ‌ Rabies, which is spread through bites or scratches from an infected animal, can be prevented if immediate treatment is administered. The infection was diagnosed in Yorkshire and The Humber, with health workers and close contacts of the woman receiving vaccinations as a safety measure. Dr Katherine Russell, head of emerging infections and zoonoses at the UKHSA, sought to reassure the public. "There is no risk to the wider public in relation to this case," stated Dr Russell. "Human cases of rabies are extremely rare in the UK and worldwide there are no documented instances of direct human to human transmission." Tragically, rabies continues to cause thousands of deaths every year, particularly in Asia and Africa, which account for 95 per cent of the deaths from rabies globally, reports the Express. ‌ Contributing factors to the prevalence of rabies in Asia and Africa include inadequate vaccination programmes, limited access to healthcare due to poverty, and a large population of unvaccinated stray dogs. Let's take a closer look at these alarming statistics from around the world. Asia ‌ Rabies is typically more prevalent in South Asia. Countries such as India, which sees a high number of fatalities from the disease, along with Pakistan and Bangladesh, are among the most severely affected. Several African countries also suffer from a high incidence of the disease in rural areas, often spreading amongst dog populations. Regions of Eastern and Western Africa are considered high-risk areas for infection. Countries like Ethiopia, Burundi, and Rwanda have been identified as being particularly susceptible to the disease. ‌ Other affected regions Despite lower rates of infection in Europe and North America, certain areas and animal populations still carry the disease. In the Americas, bats are typically the carriers of the disease. Meanwhile, sporadic outbreaks in Eastern Europe often originate in red fox populations. While the UK boasts rabies-free animal populations, a few bat species can still transmit a virus similar to rabies. ‌ Between 2000-2024, six cases of infection from exposure elsewhere were documented. Consequently, WHO officials have advised individuals travelling to high-risk areas to be aware of the potential dangers and take necessary precautions when interacting with animals that may be infected with rabies. Dr Katherine Russell cautioned: "If you are bitten, scratched or licked by an animal in a country where rabies is found then you should wash the wound or site of exposure with plenty of soap and water and seek medical advice without delay."
