The
Directorate General of Health Services
(DGHS) has asked government-run hospitals to not allow medical representatives into hospitals; instead, it has said that if they want to share advances regarding any treatment, they can do it over an email or other digital media.
In an order dated May 28, the DGHS has instructed the head of institutions to give "strict instructions" in the matter to all officials and ensure strict compliance of the order. "It is requested to take necessary action in the matter and an action taken report may be furnished to this directorate," Sunita Sharma, director general of health service, stated in the order.

The move aims to prevent disruptions and prohibits attempts to influence doctors by gifts or samples, people in the know told ET. "Direct interactions between pharmaceutical representatives and doctors can compromise

. The government has, therefore, asked hospital heads to stipulate that any information on a new launch should be communicated via an email," said one person.
It is also believed that patients are left untreated as a majority of doctors' time is consumed by medical representatives who visit them to promote products.

"The pharma-doctor nexus is very well known. Government hospitals mostly cater to poor patients who come to these hospitals from far-flung areas. We don't want the time that the doctor should give a poor patient is consumed by a medical representative for his company's benefit," according to one government official.
Last year, the department of pharmaceuticals (DoP) notified the new Uniform Code for Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices (UCPMP), aimed at keeping unethical Practices in check.
The UCPMP established a framework for communication claims, educational activities, samples and other market initiatives. It laid down what activities are permissible and outlined a complaint procedure involving both industry associations and the DoP.
Pharma companies were earlier asked to explain why they need to offer gifts and free medicines as samples to doctors to promote their products, as part of a government's move to review the regulatory framework on marketing practices in the sector.

72% drop in malaria cases in Bastar from 2015, says admin
Raipur: Bastar division has recorded a 72% drop in malaria cases compared to 2015, under state's disease control programme in one of the most challenging malaria-prone regions, officials said. According to a data released by the state health department, the malaria positivity rate in Bastar has fallen from 4.60% to just 0.46%, while the Annual Parasite Incidence (API) in the region has dropped from 27.4 in 2015 to 7.11 in 2024. At the state level, the API has gone down from 5.21 to 0.98 in the same period. Compared to 2023, malaria cases in 2024 have seen a further decline of 8.52%. Health department officials said that the 10th and 11th phases of the Malaria Mukt Chhattisgarh campaign in 2024 focused on enhanced surveillance and focused treatment, which played a critical role in pushing the numbers down further. The state is conducting the campaign in alignment with guidelines from the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) and the World Health Organization (WHO). ‘Inappropriate to claim man intentionally hid disease': Insurance firm ordered to pay
Raipur: The Chhattisgarh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission directed an insurance firm backed by a nationalised bank to pay Rs 50 lakh to Savitri Salam, whose husband's insurance claim was initially rejected. The commission found that the insurer failed to conclusively prove concealment of pre-existing diseases by the deceased. Savitri Salam, a resident of Surdongar village in Keshkal tehsil, filed a complaint after her husband's health deteriorated, leading to his demise on 16 June 2021. She sought a claim under a policy taken by her husband, but the insurance firm rejected it, alleging that he provided incorrect information about his pre-existing medical conditions and treatment in the proposal form. The insurance company argued before the district consumer commission that the insured suffered from diabetes and heart disease prior to taking the policy, and this was noted in his medical records from AIIMS, Raipur, as part of his medical history. Based on this, the claim was rejected due to misrepresentation of health information in the proposal form. During the appeal hearing, the bench of Justice Gautam Chourdiya, president, and Pramod Kumar Varma, member, determined that the claim was rejected solely based on a note in the AIIMS, Raipur, medical record. No other medical records were presented to conclusively prove that the insured suffered from diabetes and heart disease before applying for the policy, underwent any prior treatment, or was on continuous medication. The commission observed there was no evidence to suggest that the insured was aware of these conditions when he submitted the proposal. The state commission concluded that it was not appropriate to claim the insured intentionally concealed important facts about his pre-existing diseases in the proposal. The appeal was rejected, and the insurance company has been directed to pay Rs 50 lakh from the life insurance claim, after deducting the Rs 56,621 premium amount already refunded to Savitri Salam by the insurance company. This amount will also include 7% annual simple interest from the date the complaint was filed (27 Dec 2023).

IAF airlifts organs from Pune to Delhi, helps save three lives
Pune: A team of doctors from Army Hospital (Research and Referral) flew in on an Indian Air Force's Super Hercules aircraft on Friday night to collect and transport a liver and two kidneys from a 59-year-old brain-dead woman in Pune to New Delhi for transplantation, after her family generously consented to organ donation. The donor, mother of a serving soldier, was declared brain-dead at Command Hospital on on June 17. "The team retrieved a liver, two kidneys and two corneas in under four hours before taking off to Delhi, where the liver was transplanted into a civilian patient. The two kidneys were transplanted into two serving soldiers. The donor saved three lives," said a senior doctor from Command Hospital. A green air corridor was created for the aircraft to facilitate the airlift of live organs from Pune to Delhi. "Under the green air corridor protocol, the aircraft gets priority for take-off and landing. Besides, all ground clearances, including radars, get an alert in advance for the smooth flying of the aircraft," a senior IAF officer told TOI. "This humanitarian mission was enabled by seamless coordination between Armed Forces Medical Services and IAF, ensuring that the organs reached in time to save multiple lives.
