Grounded 2 Surprisingly Revealed at Xbox Games Showcase 2025
At SGF 2025, Xbox unleashed their Xbox Games Showcase chock full of trailers and the next game from Obsidian, Grounded 2 was revealed.
The Xbox Games Showcase 2025 laid many surprises at Xbox fans' feet, including the official reveal of the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally. Xbox still had a lot more in store for players, and although Obsidian Entertainment had the The Outer Worlds 2 Direct that follows the Xbox Games Showcase, they revealed another sequel during the Xbox Games Showcase. Grounded 2 is coming, and the first reveal trailer can be seen below.
CGMagazine's review of the original Grounded called it 'a unique title with a simple premise, but a lot of meat on its bones' back when it launched in 2022. Instead of carving a live-service feel from the original Grounded from 2022 similar to how Xbox Studios handled RARE's Sea of Thieves, Xbox gave Obsidian Entertainment the green light to develop a full-fledged sequel. The original Grounded title was released two years after it entered early access for PlayStation, and although the trailer was brief, it made no mention of coming to the PlayStation platform.
Grounded 2 follows the premise of the original game, but this time, the adventurous party of select-a-character kids are navigating a local park, riding ants, running along picnic tables and fallen popsicles, and battling a bevy of spiders and scorpions instead of just exploring a massive backyard. Obsidian Entertainment has been on a tear lately with their releases, The Outer Worlds (and a sequel), Grounded, and the Pillars of Eternity universe spin-off with Avowed. Xbox continues to greenlight many of the studio's upcoming projects.
Interestingly enough, Grounded 2 is not only in development, but it's launching into Xbox Game Preview and Steam Early Access on July 29, 2025. Fans looking for more SGF 2025 coverage, can head to CGMagazine for all of it!

Is Windows the Future of Xbox?
Microsoft dropped some new details about its next-generation Xbox, and it sure sounds like the next console will be very similar to a Windows PC. If so, this plan could conceivably lead to Steam on the Xbox. Xbox President Sarah Bond hinted at big changes for the upcoming Xbox in an announcement on YouTube about AMD's involvement in providing the console's chips. It's not surprising that AMD has a role in the next Xbox, as it's provided hardware for Xbox in the past, but Bond managed to pack quite a few revelations into the short announcement video (below). Bond kicked off the announcement by revealing a 'strategic, multi-year partnership with AMD' that will include the next generation Xbox 'in your living room and in your hands.' As she finished that statement, she held her hands the way one would to hold Asus' upcoming ROG Xbox Ally, a Nintendo Switch-shaped portable gaming console running a custom version of Windows. The UI is that of Xbox, but it supports other stores, like Steam. Unfortunately, as Polygon points out, the Xbox Ally only plays Xbox games designed for PC play. Standard Xbox console games get left out. To cap it off, Bond said the goal was to bring gamers 'an Xbox experience not locked to a single store or tied to a single device.' 'That's why we're working closely with the Windows team to ensure that Windows is the number one platform for gaming,' Bond added. As we said, that has Steam written all over it in our eyes. Of course, other game stores will also want to get access to the console, but adding the Steam Store to the Xbox would be a huge win for gamers. It's also worth noting that Bond said the upcoming Xbox hardware would maintain 'compatibility with your existing library of Xbox games.' That statement, perhaps more than any other she made during the video, suggests that Microsoft is determined to be gamer-centric. If the company forced gamers to ditch their game collections…well, Microsoft isn't doing that, so we don't need to imagine the chaos. The next-gen Xbox should arrive sometime in 2027. The launch of the Asus ROG Xbox Ally was expected for 2025, so if that's any indication, we'd say development of the next Xbox is likely on track.

PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst wants to develop Astro Bot into an enduring series, calling it one of the consoles "most exciting recent successes"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst has praised Astro Bot, calling it one of PlayStation's "most exciting recent successes." Astro Bot was a breath of fresh air for Sony's first-party output which has been relegated to cinematic third-person action games for the longest time, and embodied the spirit of Japan Studio (it getting shut down is probably the biggest blunder of Sony's 2020s, if you ask me). Since then the game has become one of the most beloved platformers of all time, winning Game of the Year at the BAFTAs and The Game Awards. Sony Interactive Entertainment's business group CEO Hermen Hulst gives the game praise during a recent video presentation (via Genki_JPN). During the talk, he calls Astro Bot one of PlayStation's "most exciting recent successes." Hulst adds: "Astro Bot was a smash hit, achieving universal acclaim among players and critics and sweeping industry award shows." When speaking about growing game IP into franchises, Astro Bot is listed as an "emerging IP," hopefully meaning that we should be getting more Astro in the future, (thankfully). Hopefully the success of Astro Bot shows PlayStation the value in having franchises that don't quite fit into that prestige AAA mold or the live service world. After Japan Studio was shuttered in 2021, it meant the studio which were constantly pumping out unique games and ideas were all but gone (the studio was merged into Team Asobi). But, in an era where big Sony series are taking longer to come out (the PS5 generation will probably almost be over by the time the next Naughty Dog game releases), little games like Ape Escape, Gravity Rush, and Patapon would go down a treat. Sony is "really thoughtful" about bringing PlayStation franchises like God of War and The Last of Us off console, and PS5 games going to PC is a matter of "if", not when.
