Opinion: Rulani Mokwena must prove himself for three years at teams like TS Galaxy

Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena is set to return to South Africa soon, as his tenure with Wydad Casablanca is scheduled to end next month.
The 38-year-old joined the Moroccan giants last year with the goal of restoring their status at the top of the league. However, Mokwena has faced challenges in the Botola Pro 1, with his team struggling to secure a third-place finish.
To earn a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup, Wydad Casablanca must win all its remaining matches. A third-place finish may be seen as respectable but falls short of expectations, given Mokwena's inability to inspire his players this season.
The team's record of 12 draws in 27 matches indicates a struggle to secure wins and adapt to Mokwena's coaching methods.
Mlungisi spent most of his coaching career there, working with the development team before becoming a protégé of Pitso Mosimane. After Mosimane left the club in 2020, Mokwena, along with Manqoba Mngqithi and Steve Komphela, served as co-coaches for two years before Rulani eventually took over as the sole head coach. His two-year tenure brought some success, but the lack of a Champions League title ultimately led the club to part ways with him.
A week later, he took on the head coach role at Wydad.
In 2017, Mokwena briefly joined Orlando Pirates as an assistant coach before assuming the head coach position a year later. However, his tenure proved disastrous, resulting in his demotion. He did not take the news well and decided to leave the club shortly afterwards. He then had a brief stint coaching Chippa United during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it did not work out, and he returned to Sundowns.
Mokwena has a deep understanding of Sundowns, from the development structures to the first team, which made it easier for him to build upon Mosimane's legacy. Without Sundowns, however, Mokwena has struggled to find his footing.
In truth, Rulani Mokwena is a competent coach considering his age, but he needs to manage a PSL midtable team for at least three years to develop his skills and enhance his coaching résumé outside of Sundowns. Transitioning between Arab clubs will not contribute significantly to his knowledge, as he would primarily focus on winning leagues and championships with well-established teams.
Mlungisi will gain more respect in the coaching community if he can build a smaller team from the ground up, similar to what Mosimane and Gavin Hunt have achieved.

Sundowns' Club World Cup dream not over yet despite loss to Dortmund

Sundowns had the upper hand in the game, with former Dortmund player Tashreq Matthews giving the SA champions a lot of attacking options with his speed on the left flank. But lack of awareness and sharpness let down Sundowns as they gave away possession in dangerous areas in all the goals that they conceded before the break. Sundowns started brightly in the second half pinning Dortmund in their own half as they looked to reduce the deficit. Mokoena was unlucky to see his free kick deflected over the bar by Dortmund's wall less than ten minutes after the restart. But just as Sundowns thought they were back in control, Dortmund got one break that ended with Sundowns right back Khuliso Mudau deflecting Daniel Svensson's cross into his own net to stretch the German team's lead to 4-1. Sundowns revived their hopes of catching Dortmund when they immediately reduced the score to 4-2 after Iqraam Rayners scored his second goal in the tournament by heading in Mokoena's well taken free kick just outside the area. Downs pushed Dortmund all the way and were further rewarded for their efforts when substitute Lebo Mothiba made it 4-3 on the stroke of full time as they forced Dortmund to make mistakes at the back. Sundowns cannot afford to hang their heads in shame after this defeat as they showed the world what they are capable of. The match against Fluminense will, however, stretch them at a time when they cannot afford to make the kind of mistakes they made against Dortmund.

Kaizer Chiefs transfer news: Velebayi, Kwinika, Maart, Nabi, CAF

Kaizer Chiefs are yet to announce any new signings but the club have been making grounds behind the scenes on a number of players. The team is set to jet off to the Netherlands for their pre-season training next month where they will play a number of friendly matches. Having won the Nedbank Cup, Amakhosi will participate in next season's CAF Confederation Cup meaning coach Nasreddine Nabi will need a big squad. In the past few days, Amakhosi have been linked with SuperSport United's Ime Okon. The young defender is set to leave Matsatsantsa but it seems like moving abroad is his main objective. If Chiefs can push for a move to happen, they might sign the 21-year-old promising defender. So far, Amakhosi have Rushwin Dortley, Inacio Miguel and Given Msimango in defence. Young Aden McCarthy has been promoted from the reserve side making him an option in that position. Another player who was set to leave was Zita Kwinika. The Soweto-born defender did not play much under Nabi until the end of the season where he impressed the coaching staff. According to reports, the defender has penned a new deal, keeping him at Kaizer Chiefs for another season. Another player believed to have signed for the Soweto giants is Asanele Velebayi. Amakhosi chased the winger last year but failed to secure his services. According to KickOff , Kaizer Chiefs had until the end of May to exercise the option to extend Yusuf Maart but the club failed to do so 'End of May is standard procedure to exercise the option. If a club does not exercise the option, the player is free to sign with someone else,' an experienced agent told the publication. 'No one wants to leave Chiefs, you know. If the player doesn't want to leave the team, he'll hold out until they tell him something,' added the agent. Kaizer Chiefs have already parted ways with Njabulo Blom, Ranga Chivaviro, Sabelo Radebe, and Edmilson Dove.
