Spanish police officer arrested over suspect's death
An off-duty police officer has been arrested in Spain after allegedly choking a suspected thief to death in a Madrid suburb. Authorities said the incident occurred on Tuesday night in Torrejon de Ardoz, just east of the country's capital, after the man had stolen the officer's phone. Video footage released by Spanish media outlets shows the officer in plain clothes pinning the man to the ground with his arm around the suspect's neck as he waits for on-duty police to arrive. Several bystanders can be heard in the video pleading with the officer to release his grip. 'You're going to suffocate the guy, man – let go of his neck,' one witness was heard yelling. 'He's not going to run away, just let him go,' another witness says. When National Police officers arrived at the scene, the suspect was unresponsive. Emergency services were called but were unable to revive him. Officials confirmed on social media platform X that a 36-year-old Moroccan man had died by strangulation in Torrejon de Ardoz on Tuesday night. An autopsy will be carried out to determine his cause of death. Officials confirmed the man's passing in a statement on X. Credit: @112cmadrid / X Regional political party Mas Madrid demanded an investigation into the 'apparent asphyxiation killing by a police officer'. 'If confirmed, this would be a very serious case of racist police violence resulting in the death of the North African man,' they said. The Madrid High Court of Justice said the man is being investigated for negligent homicide.

Facing the former English champions in their group-stage opener, Wydad were always in for a tough night, but the 31-year-old South African winger emerged as one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise frustrating outing. The former Orlando Pirates star looked lively from the outset, offering an attacking threat both wide and on the inside, and remained one of Wydad's more consistent outlets throughout the 90 minutes. The result leaves Wydad with plenty to do in their remaining group-stage fixture if they are to keep their tournament hopes alive, but Lorch's individual performance gave South African fans reason to be optimistic. Starting upfront as the focal point of Wydad's attack, the young forward struggled to influence proceedings, largely due to a lack of service. He was withdrawn at halftime as the technical team sought to spark a second-half comeback. City, despite fielding a rotated side without several key players, showed their pedigree early. Phil Foden opened the scoring within two minutes – one of the fastest goals in Club World Cup history – capitalising on a lapse in Wydad's defensive shape. Just before halftime, Jeremy Doku's quick feet carved open the Moroccan defence again, with City doubling their lead and effectively killing off the contest before the interval. To Wydad's credit, they refused to sit back. They pressed high and tried to assert their style, but their energy lacked end-product. Moments of promise often faded without the clinical final ball, and City's composure and control ensured the result never truly looked in doubt. Still, the 31-year-old Lorch remained a threat, particularly in the first half. His touches were purposeful, his runs intelligent, and his confidence increasingly evident – a far cry from the player who had struggled for game-time at Mamelodi Sundowns just months ago. His loan move to Wydad has breathed new life into his career. Under the initial guidance of Rulani Mokwena and now Amine Benhachem, he has grown in influence and consistency, rediscovering the form that once made him a stand-out for Pirates and a regular in the national team set-up. A lot of credit must go to Mokwena, who showed faith in the former Pirates player and took him along during his initial stint with the Moroccan giants. Even in Mokwena's absence, the quality in the player continues to shine through, and he could once again become a key figure even in the national team.

City, now part of an international network of 12 clubs, are hoping to further broaden their reach with a strong run at the ongoing Club World Cup in the United States. Yet while City have been transformed radically since being taken over by Sheikh Mansour in 2008, Soriano maintains their ambitions will not come at the cost of tradition. Soriano told DAZN: 'We have our roots and we are proud of them. 'But you can be local and relevant and faithful to the history of the club, and the fans that support you, but you can also be global and show what we do – which we believe is beautiful football – to the world. 'It's a combination that works very well and we are proud.' City began their challenge in the US with a 2-0 win over Moroccan side Wydad AC in front of a crowd of 37,446 in Philadelphia on Wednesday. The tournament has faced plenty of criticism for a variety of reasons, including its positioning in the calendar and consequent player welfare concerns, ticket prices, poor attendances, kick-off times and venue choices. Yet Soriano has no doubt of the merits of the revamped competition, which has been expanded from the seven-team event won by City in 2023 to a month-long affair featuring 32 clubs. The Spaniard said: 'We are very excited by it. I think it's something that was very much needed. Soccer is a global sport and we have to make it global. 'You have to have teams like Manchester City playing teams from Morocco, Korea or wherever. That's part of the globalisation of the number one sport in the world. 'I think it's a great initiative and we are very happy to be here.' City have set their sights on victory having refreshed the squad following an underwhelming 2024-25 season. They signed four new players last week in Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli, having also brought in Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis in January. Soriano said: 'The ambition for City in any competition is to win it. That's the status of the club. 'Obviously it's not possible to win always, so we want to go as far as we can. 'The squad needs to be renewed. It's something that happens naturally. 'We are very happy, I'm happy, with the work that we did. 'Last summer we only bought one new player but this year between the winter and the summer it will be eight new ones. 'It's part of the annual cycle, the renewal of the squad. We accelerated some of it and now we are very happy with the squad we have.'

Kenya National Assembly Speaker receives Polisario representative
Nearly a month after Kenya officially voiced support for Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara, the Polisario's main ally in Nairobi has resurfaced. On Thursday, June 19, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula, met with the Polisario's representative in Kenya. «Today, I hosted His Excellency Mohamed-Liman Ali Ami, the Ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, who paid me a courtesy call at my office at Parliament Buildings», Wetangula posted. «Our discussions focused on strengthening the bilateral relationship between our two nations and exploring ways to deepen diplomatic engagement for the mutual benefit of our citizens. I assured the Ambassador that Kenya, as a committed member of the African Union (AU), stands in solidarity with the Sahrawi Republic and remains steadfast in supporting and safeguarding its interests as a sovereign state», he added. Wetangula is widely seen as the Polisario's key ally within the Kenyan government. According to an October 2022 report by the South African-based Institute for Security Studies, Wetangula, a former foreign minister, played a pivotal role in convincing President William Ruto to delete a tweet posted on September 14, 2022, in which he had announced Kenya's withdrawal of recognition of the «SADR». Wetangula is a powerful political figure in Kenya. He heads the FORD-Kenya party, a member of the Kenya Kwanza coalition that backed Ruto's successful 2022 presidential bid. Just weeks after Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch met with President Ruto in Dakar on January 26, 2023, Wetangula traveled to Algeria, where he met with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and reaffirmed his support for the Polisario. He reiterated this position again in November 2023, after several African political leaders signed the « Tangier Appeal » calling for the expulsion of the «SADR» from the African Union. Following a meeting with the Polisario representative in Nairobi, Wetangula stated, «I reassured him of my support, noting their membership in the AU, akin to our shared responsibility.» In contrast, during a working visit to Morocco in late May, Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi declared that «the Republic of Kenya considers the autonomy plan as the only sustainable approach to resolving the Sahara issue and intends to collaborate with states sharing this vision to promote its implementation». Just one day after that statement, Wetangula hosted the Algerian ambassador in Nairobi.
