Borussia Dortmund substitutes cowered from the sun in the team's Club World Cup win over Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, in conditions coach Niko Kovac described as like "a sauna".
The German side won 4-3 in Cincinnati at the TQL Stadium under a blazing sun, with the team's reserves watching the first half from the dressing room and the second under umbrellas on the bench.
"I'm sweating like I've just come out of a sauna," said Kovac, who had already complained about the expected conditions on Friday before the Group F clash with the South Africans.
"It was tough going for both teams, but the opposition are used to it. We certainly didn't give our best performance, but that wasn't possible today.'

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso sees a silver lining despite defeat
Miguel Cardoso Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso was full of praise for his side despite losing to the German side Dortmund. Picture: Itumeleng English/Independent Media Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso sought to put a positive spin on the heartbreaking loss, insisting that there were key takeaways for his team after they succumbed to a 4-3 defeat against the German giants Borussia Dortmund. After the match, Cardoso expressed his discontent with the result but acknowledged the valuable lessons gleaned from competing against one of the top teams in European football. 'Losing 3-4 to Borussia Dortmund doesn't make us happy as coaches,' Cardoso remarked. 'But we saw good things on the pitch today.' Cardoso noted that while many would focus on the final result, the emphasis should instead be placed on the players' competitive spirit displayed throughout the game. 'Some will focus on the result, but we were competitive at the highest level of football in the world,' he stated. 'The boys made a wonderful performance; it was a hell of a match. I'm not happy but very proud. 'It's important people understand what was at stake in this match. Considering the level of the team that we played against, we worked fantastically. "I think it was clear that today we pushed the level of the game to the maximum, to the highest level, and we could play an open game with such a strong opponent. "It's important that people understand the quality of the German opponents so that they can highlight the quality of the game that was played today. "I'm very proud of the level of football that the players played. I'm very proud of the resilience they showed throughout the game so that we could finish the game playing for the result (a win). "We saw during injury time, the Dortmund players just wanted to finish the game, while we continued to fight for the victory. "We need to understand that when we play teams like this, they will penalise you with two goals from two chances. "That's why the amount of money paid for these players takes them to another level. Looking ahead, Sundowns will face Brazil's Fluminense in Miami on Wednesday. This encounter will be pivotal as they try to recover and solidify their standing in the group. A win against Fluminense could potentially secure qualification for the last 16 round. At the same time, Borussia Dortmund will square off against South Korea's Ulsan in Cincinnati, hoping to build on this victory and maintain their momentum as they aim for a solid finish in the group standings. Every point matters as these teams vie for advancement, making each upcoming match pivotal in determining who will progress to the last 16 round.

Ronwen Williams' howler is one of the major talking points of Mamelodi Sundowns' defeat
Mamelodi Sundowns' Lucas Ribeiro proved to be a menace to the Borussia Dortmund defenders in the Club World Cup match in Cincinnati on Saturday. | BackpagePix Borussia Dortmund rebounded from an early setback to secure a 2-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns FC, claiming their first win in Group F of the FIFA Club World Cup 2023. The match kicked off with an unexpected twist; Sundowns' Brazilian sensation, Lucas Ribeiro, put the South African side ahead just minutes into the game. In a moment that all young footballers dream of, Ribeiro received the ball at midfield, deftly evaded a defender and raced past another, before elegantly finishing past Dortmund's goalkeeper, Gregor Kobel. The goal sent the Sundowns fans into a frenzy, as their team appeared to have rattled the highly regarded Bundesliga outfit early on. However, Dortmund, known for their resilience and attacking prowess, quickly regrouped. The German side's coaching staff must have lit a fire beneath their players during the interval, as they displayed a determined front after the initial shock. Within minutes of conceding, Dortmund began to carve out opportunities, capitalising on their superior fitness and technical skills to dominate possession and run up a 4-1 lead. Sundowns finished strongly with two goals in the second half to close out the final scoreline at 4-3. Here are some of the talking points of the game. 1 Williams' howler A glaring blunder by Sundowns' goalkeeper Williams proved to be a turning point, raising questions about its impact on the team's momentum and confidence. From the outset, Sundowns displayed confidence and determination, showcasing their attacking prowess and creating a flurry of scoring opportunities. The early goal sent a ripple of excitement through the stands and provided a foundation upon which the team could build. Yet, as the clock ticked on, Walker's fateful misstep would soon eclipse their bright beginning. He gifted the ball with a 'no-look' pass to Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, who calmly equalised. 2 A tale of two continents The game served as a poignant reminder of one fundamental area where the top teams in Europe consistently excel over those in Africa: efficiency. While the Brazilian squad showcased their trademark flair, creating numerous opportunities to score, they struggled to capitalise, managing to convert only one goal due to indecision and a lack of sharpness in their final touches. Meanwhile, the German side demonstrated a stark contrast, converting their chances seamlessly and demonstrating a clinical finish that is often the hallmark of successful teams. This disparity highlights an enduring challenge in South African football. Despite an abundance of creativity and technical skills among South African players, the inability to effectively finish opportunities, execute precise crosses, and deliver accurate passes has begun to haunt the beautiful game on the continent. 3 Bright prospects for Sundowns on the international stage Sundowns secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Ulsan Hyundai of South Korea in their opening match, leaving the team with a renewed hope of progressing to the knockout stages of the tournament. As they prepare for a crucial clash against Brazil's Fluminense, Dortmund coach Niko Kovac said Sundowns have the potential to seize the moment and advance further. He was so impressed with Sundowns despite having defeated the side 4-3. He said: "The determination and skill shown in the first two matches are commendable. If they maintain this momentum and adapt to Fluminense's style, the opportunity for them to progress is right there." His remarks reflect the optimism surrounding Sundowns as they navigate the complexities of international competition.
