Neon Taking North American Rights To Natalie Portman Cannes Animation ‘Arco'
EXCLUSIVE: Neon is closing up a North America deal for rights to Natalie Portman-voiced animation Arco, which recently launched at the Cannes Film Festival.
French director Ugo Bienvenu's animated feature, which has been described as 'France's answer to Studio Ghibli', is about a boy who uses rainbows to travel through time and his adventures as he gets stuck in the wrong era. There's chatter the movie could feature in the awards race.

Oscar winner Portman is also producing with Sophie Mas under their joint Paris and New York banner MountainA with Félix de Givry at Paris-based Remembers. The movie debuted as a special screening in Cannes.
It's another win for Neon, which has been voracious once again at Cannes, also acquiring The Secret Agent, It Was Just An Accident and Sirat, in addition to Sentimental Value, which they already had.
Taking its cue from the fantasy premise that rainbows are time machines, the movie revolves around 10 year old rainbow-child Arco, who lives in the distant future, 2932. His maiden journey in his multi-colored suit does not go to plan. He loses control and veers off course to land in a near future, 2075, where Iris, a girl the same age as Arco, witnesses his fall and then makes it her mission to get him home.
Arco is the first feature for Bienvenu after short films Maman and L'entretien and comic books. His multi-awarded best seller System Preference has been translated in over 10 languages and was released by Penguin in the US, England, and Canada at the end of 2023.
Bienvenu, who studied and now teaches at France's famed Gobelins animation school in Paris, has built his production team from talent he trained and nurtured there.
Portman will be among the English-language voice cast. The French language voice cast will feature Alma Jodorowsky (Blue Is The Warmest Colour), Swann Arlaud (Anatomy of a Fall), Vincent Macaigne (C'est La Vie, Suspended Time) and Louis Garrel (Little Women, The Dreamers) and rapper Oxmo Puccino.
Exec producers are Jamil Shamasdin, alongside Bill Way and Elliott Whitton for Fit Via Vi, and Douglas Choi and Martina Bassenger for Sons of Rigor.
Arco marks the first feature animation for Portman and Mas' MountainA since its launch in 2020. The company made its festival debut at Cannes 2023 with Todd Haynes' May December.
Goodfellas and CAA Media Finance are repping rights.

Ezra Miller Admits Holding 'A Lot Of Regret' But Would Return To Hollywood 'On Tentative Grounds'

The "Flash" actor, who suffered a slew of legal issues in 2022 due to allegations of grooming, assault, and burglary, among others, spoke about making a comeback. Last month, Miller walked the red carpet for the first time at the Cannes Film Festival after an almost two-year hiatus away from the spotlight. In a rare interview, Miller admitted they haven't given up on returning to the big screen. Although they didn't go into details, they confirmed it would happen on "tentative grounds." The "Fantastic Beasts" actor, however, touched on their shocking resurgence at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where they attended the premiere of Lynne Ramsey's "Die, My Love." Wearing a maroon tuxedo and beret, Miller barely interacted with photographers, briskly walking past with their head down. They refused to take any photographs. "I came to Cannes to support one of my closest friends in the world, who is Lynne Ramsey—who I think is one of the greatest living filmmakers," the actor explained. They revealed a collaboration with Ramsey on an unnamed project, saying they have been "writing a lot." Without giving specifics, Miller shared that the project will "likely be the first thing I do" upon their return. While still speaking to the Italian outlet, Lo Speciale Giornale, Miller revealed they only came to the French film festival on Ramsey's request. However, it wasn't an easy thing to do. "I didn't necessarily want to go to Cannes. I had a bit of a hard time. That's a tough re-entry point." They continued, "If you've been in the woods for three years, I do not recommend going straight to Cannes, where every photographer and every weirdo, every rich genocidal freak [will] be there, you know what I mean?" Miller said they made the big sacrifice because they would do "anything" for Ramsey. Later in the interview, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" touched on their past legal troubles and erratic behavior. Miller got philosophical, giving cryptic comments to describe the difficult time. "When we go through those crucibles, if we can survive, which was up in the air for me if I'm being real, we then have that capacity to see other people in their crucibles and just to reach towards them," they told the Italian publication. The 32-year-old continued, "I think that grows more and more rarefied in our world, too. Like, the capacity to do that, the desire to do that, the willingness to do that." They also confessed to being "very consumed in notions of perception." However, they managed to dig past that by "being a friend to people." Miller further spoke about those who were supportive during their troubles, saying, "They have my lifelong devotion." However, the DCU actor also became aware of those who abandoned them during their legal controversies. Discussing the betrayal, they said: "I'm grateful for the revelations of who was not that. When you work in this industry, you'll find yourself in deep, deep relation with a lot of people who do not give a single f-ck about you, or your well-being, at all." Miller continued, "Not that I don't hold a lot of remorse and lamentation for a lot of things that I did and a lot of things that happened in that time, but I'm really, really grateful for the lessons that came with that abyss." Ezra Miller's controversies date back to 2020, when a viral video showed the actor appearing to choke a woman at a bar in Reykjavik, Iceland. Although no charges were filed, things went downhill from there, with 2022 being his worst year. It began with a series of arrests in Hawaii. On different occasions, the New Jersey native was accused of causing a scene and harassing patrons at a karaoke bar. They were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, later pleading no contest and paying a $500 fine. Barely a month later, in April 2022, Miller got in trouble again for allegedly hurling a chair at a 26-year-old woman at a private party. They were slammed with a second-degree assault charge. Come June 2022, grooming allegations were levied against the "We Need To Talk About Kevin" star. They were also accused of breaking into a Vermont home to steal alcohol. Miller finally issued an apology in August of that year via a lengthy statement. "Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment," it read. "I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior."

Dave Franco and Alison Brie's ‘Together' director calls identity theft lawsuit ‘deeply upsetting'
The director of 'Together,' a new horror film by Bay Area filmmaker Dave Franco and his wife Alison Brie, has spoken up about the copyright infringement lawsuit that it has been embroiled in. 'It's not just a script; it's a reflection of something deeply personal,' the film's director, Michael Shanks, said in a statement released Wednesday, June 18. 'I lost my father at a young age in the same way our main character does, his trauma is rooted in my own. To have this called into question is not only deeply upsetting but entirely untrue.' The lawsuit, filed by production company StudioFest on May 13, claims that the Sundance Film Festival horror is a 'blatant rip-off' of Patrick Henry Phelan's 2023 independent romantic comedy 'Better Half.' Both films center on the concept of a couple being physically fused together, and the suit alleges that several other elements, including a 'near verbatim' reference to Plato's 'Symposium,' were copied. The suit lays out a timeline asserting that Brie and Franco were pitched on 'Better Half' in 2020, and that their agent at William Morris Endeavor Entertainment turned it down. However, Shanks claimed in his statement that he completed the film's first draft in 2019, subsequently registering it to the Writer's Guild of America later that year. After receiving development funding in 2020, he was introduced to Franco in 2022 and pitched the film to him. Shanks described being accused of idea theft as devastating. 'The suggestion not only undermines the work but also attempts to erase the emotional and professional journey I've taken to bring it to life,' he said. Last month, the defendants' attorney Nicolas Jampol asserted the films are 'not remotely similar' in a letter sent to StudioFest, which is behind 'Better Half.' 'Your client does not own this concept,' Jampol wrote in the May 21 letter, which was obtained by Variety. 'Neither do our clients. It is an unprotectable idea, one that predates all of our clients and has been explored in many films, television shows and other fictional works.' Franco, a Palo Alto High School alum and brother of actor James Franco, and Brie are both producers on the project and are among the defendants listed in the suit. Others include Shanks, WME and Neon, the distributor that acquired the film for $17 million. A joint statement from Neon and WME notes that 'the plaintiff is doing nothing more than drumming up 15 minutes of fame for a failed project.' 'Together' is due out July 30.
