Nepal: Methane gas reserves discovered in Himalayan nation
Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli welcomed as "good news" on Friday the discovery of large methane gas reserves in the Himalayan nation in a joint study with China. "The news that there are 112 billion cubic metres of gas... is good news," Oli said in a Facebook post. The Department of Mines and Geology said the gas was discovered in the western district of Dailekh. "This is an initial estimate. Lab tests of the samples will give more information on the characteristics of the reserve," Prakash Luitel, a geologist at the department, told AFP. The study was conducted with the government-run China Geological Survey. "The final report is expected in December. We will then get better information for the next stage," said the mines and geology department's spokesman Mukunda Bhattarai. He said drilling was done at a depth of up to 4,013 metres (13,166 feet). Petroleum products remain landlocked Nepal's top import despite Kathmandu boosting energy production in recent years through a dam-building spree. Nepal spent more than $1.5 billion on petroleum products over the past 10 months, accounting for nearly 16 percent of total imports, according to central bank data.

AI can aid counter-extremism if developed responsibly, says new Hedayah report
20 June 2025 19:26 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)Made possible through the generous support of the United Arab Emirates, Hedayah — the International Center of Excellence for Countering Extremism and Violent Extremism — launched a new research brief examining how Artificial Intelligence (AI) may be responsibly leveraged to support terrorism prevention efforts, as the use of AI grows across all sectors of report, 'Artificial Intelligence for Counter Extremism'', underlines that while terrorist exploitation of AI remains largely experimental at present, it is expected to grow and adapt over time. The report offers a balanced, evidence-based analysis of both the risks associated with AI misuse and the opportunities it presents to strengthen counter-extremism from a review of 52 academic publications and insights from five expert roundtables involving stakeholders from government, academia, the tech industry and civil society, the research maps out the evolving landscape of AI-enabled extremism and corresponding policy its key findings, the report notes that extremists are already testing AI tools such as multilingual translation, content adaptation, and deepfake technology to spread disinformation and accelerate radicalisation. While much of the existing research focuses on predicting future threats, there has been less emphasis on understanding current applications of AI and its role in eroding public trust within the broader information the prevention side, AI's use has primarily centred on content moderation. However, Hedayah identifies broader opportunities, including improved strategic communications and enhanced messaging campaigns aimed at fostering social resilience against extremist ideologies. The report also flags a pressing need to address systemic biases in AI systems, warning that such disparities risk marginalising already vulnerable communities and exacerbating social support effective and ethical deployment of AI in counter-extremism, Hedayah recommends promoting greater diversity within AI development teams to ensure inclusive design. It calls for prioritising 'safety by design' and integrating human oversight into AI processes. The report advocates for robust collaboration between sectors and disciplines to ensure diverse perspectives are incorporated and urges the inclusion of AI literacy in broader media literacy programmes. It also recommends a continuous monitoring approach to AI trends and threats, coupled with proportionate, evidence-based risk assessments that avoid both alarmism and Al Qasimi, Executive Director of Hedayah, underscored the importance of embracing the opportunities presented by AI technology.'Generative AI is a powerful tool - we must focus on harnessing it wisely to prevent radicalisation, enhance safety, and counter extremism.' Sheikh Mohammed Announces an AI System as UAE Cabinet Member
The Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, announced that an AI system will serve as an advisory member of the UAE Cabinet. H.H. Sheikh Mohammed said on Friday, June 20, that the National Artificial Intelligence System will join the UAE Cabinet as an advisory member from January 2026. The Ruler of Dubai wrote on X, "We also announce that the National Artificial Intelligence System will be adopted as an advisory member of the Cabinet, the Ministerial Development Council, and all boards of directors of federal entities and government companies, starting in January 2026." He added, "The goal is to support decision-making in these councils, conduct immediate analyses of their decisions, provide technical advice, and enhance the efficiency of government policies adopted by these councils across all sectors."
