2 held for sheltering Pahalgam attackers

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two men for allegedly harbouring the terrorists who killed 26 civilians in Pahalgam two months ago, the agency said on Sunday, marking the first set of arrests in connection with the terror attack. ITBP personnel patrol an area at Betaab Valley of Pahalgam ahead of reopening of tourists places in the area, which were closed in view of security considerations after the April 22 Pahalgam attack, in Anantnag district, Sunday (PTI) In a statement, NIA said that Pahalgam residents Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar and Bashir Ahmad Jothar knew about the terror affiliations of the three gunmen and provided them with shelter, food and logistical support in the days leading up to the April 22 attack. 'Parvaiz and Bashir had knowingly harboured the three armed terrorists at a seasonal dhok (hut) at Hill Park before the attack. The two men had provided food, shelter and logistical support to the terrorists who selectively killed the tourists on the basis of their religious identity,' the anti-terror agency said in a statement and added the two have been charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act's (UAPA) Section 19 (punishment for harbouring or concealing a terrorist). The agency did not disclose further information about the two men. Also Read | Pahalgam probe: In hunt for gunmen, 2 possibilities on radar Since the terror strike, security forces have killed six terrorists in separate encounters across Kashmir, but the Pahalgam attackers remain at large. Authorities detained close to 2,000 people for questioning in the aftermath of the attack. 'The duo has also disclosed the identities of the three armed terrorists involved in the attack, and have also confirmed that they were Pakistani nationals affiliated to the proscribed terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT),' the anti-terror agency said in the statement. Also Read | 'Attack on every Indian's soul': PM Modi on Pahalgam terror attack at G7 Summit Authorities earlier identified the suspected attackers as Hashim Musa, also known as Suleiman, and Ali Bhai, also called Talha Bhai — both Pakistani nationals — and local operative Adil Hussain Thokker. The agency did not clarify on Sunday if the three terrorists alluded to in its statement were same as the ones identified earlier. NIA, which is formally investigating the case, has questioned hundreds of people over two months, including suspected collaborators, pony operators, vendors and tourism workers. Investigators have also examined videos and photographs taken by families at Baisaran meadow on the day of the attack. HT reported on Sunday that security forces are pursuing two theories about the whereabouts of the terrorists, with officials divided over whether the attackers remain in hiding or have fled to Pakistan. The Resistance Front, a proxy group for the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba organisation, claimed responsibility for the attack. Indian agencies say the group is a front used by Pakistan to avoid international sanctions. As first reported by HT on April 24, intelligence agencies traced the attack's digital communications to safe houses in Muzaffarabad and Karachi, establishing Pakistani involvement in what officials described as similar to the control room-operated 2008 Mumbai attacks. India responded with Operation Sindoor on May 7, bombing nine terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in pre-dawn strikes that killed at least 100 militants. The operation sparked four days of cross-border fighting involving fighter jets, missiles and artillery.

Rajnath, Doval likely to visit China to attend SCO meeting

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval are likely to travel to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meetings. While Singh is likely to travel to Qingdao from June 25-27, Doval is likely to travel to the country from June 24-26, sources said. This will be their first meeting of Singh and Doval with their Chinese counterparts since the military hostilities between India and Pakistan in May this year following India's Operation Sindoor launched in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack. The Indian Armed Forces intercepted and neutralised a range of high-tech foreign weapons used by Pakistan, including Chinese-origin PL-15 air-to-air missiles and Turkish Byker YIHA III Kamikaze drones. Both the Defence Minister and NSA level meetings will also witness participation from Pakistan as well. Pakistan's Defence Minister Khwaja Asif and the country's NSA and DG ISIS, Lt Gen Asim Malik are also expected to attend. China is the host of the SCO leaders' Summit in Tianjin, and these meetings are preparatory for the leaders' meeting to be hosted by President Xi Jinping. This comes in the context of repairing bilateral ties that nosedived after Chinese incursions in 2020 triggered a military standoff along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh. Doval had travelled to Beijing in December last year when India and China agreed on a set of 'six consensus' including resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, trans-border river cooperation and Nathula border trade. This was announced by the two sides following talks in Beijing between NSA Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi who are also the Special Representatives (SRs). That was the first meeting of the SRs since frictions emerged in the Western Sector of the India-China border areas in 2020. The two sides have monitored the implementation of the disengagement agreement of October 2024, resulting in patrolling and grazing in the border areas. The meeting of the Special Representatives had taken place less than two months after a border patrolling arrangement was announced on October 21 which was followed by a meeting between PM Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia on October 23. Now, with Rajnath Singh's first visit and NSA Doval's second visit to China since the disengagement process was completed, the focus will be on the de-escalation and de-induction of troops from both sides, sources said. The two sides have taken some steps including the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which has just started, and are also in talks about resumption of direct flights. India and China are also looking at easing visa curbs for Chinese nationals and sharing data on transnational rivers, like the Brahmaputra. Earlier this month, the Indian side had conveyed its support for China's Shanghai Cooperation Organisation presidency. The two sides have also agreed to jointly make preparations for the 24th Special Representatives' Meeting on China-India Boundary Question. Sources said that the Indian side is working towards engaging with the Chinese side, but with 'eyes wide open' as the border situation is still not normal. About 50,000 to 60,000 troops from the Indian and Chinese side are still deployed along the LAC. Telangana: BRS MLC Kavitha seeks BC leaders support for proposed rail roko protest on July 17

Hyderabad, June 22 (UNI) Telangana Jagruthi president and BRS MLC, K Kavitha, on Sunday sought BC Welfare Association national president and Rajya Sabha MP R Krishnaiah for the proposed 'rail roko' protest scheduled on July 17. Kavitha, the daughter of BRS Chief and former CM KCR, who met Krishnaiah at his residence in Vidya Nagar here, requested his support for the ' Rail Roko' agitation, which aims to pressure the Central government to secure Presidential Assent for the bills granting 42 percent reservations for BCs in local body elections which passed by the Telangana Assembly earlier. Speaking to reporters on the occasion, MLC Kavitha lauded R Krishnaiah for leading numerous democratic and social movements. She stated that they have been fighting vigorously for two years to implement the Kamareddy BC Declaration given by the Congress party. She criticized the ruling Congress government, stating that despite the possibility of providing 42 per cent reservations through a GO under Article 243(D) of the Constitution, the government is not doing so and is instead shifting the blame entirely onto the President, planning to go into elections without providing reservations. She accused the Congress government of limiting its love for BCs to words and not showing it in actions. She expressed the need to collectively confront this anti-people policy, especially with leaks suggesting that the cabinet meeting might decide on local body elections. She explained that public movements appear to be the only way to pressure both central and state governments, hence the "Rail Roko" initiative. She declared, "Oar Ek Dhakka... BC Bill Pakka..." R Krishnaiah stated that MLC Kavitha is standing by the BCs and leading a movement, and he called upon all BCs to participate widely and support MLC Kavitha's movement. He praised Kavitha's struggle for the BCs, who have been subjected to injustice for generations. He remarked, "For whom is MLC Kavitha doing this movement? Isn't it for us? Therefore, we all need to support MLC Kavitha's movement. If we don't take up this movement, we have no future." He alleged that the state government is diverting public attention by rejecting the fact that the Constitution grants the state government the authority to determine the percentage of reservations in local bodies. He demanded that a GO be issued if there is genuine commitment to provide 42 percent reservations. He warned that holding elections without providing reservations would be a historic betrayal of the BCs. He unequivocally stated that if reservations are not increased, the BCs will not let go of the government. He warned that elections must be held only after providing 42 percent reservations for BCs, otherwise, there would be a "war" in the state. UNI KNR SS
