2 held for sheltering Pahalgam attackers
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two men for allegedly harbouring the terrorists who killed 26 civilians in Pahalgam two months ago, the agency said on Sunday, marking the first set of arrests in connection with the terror attack. In a statement, NIA said that Pahalgam residents Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar and Bashir Ahmad Jothar knew about the terror affiliations of the three gunmen and provided them with shelter, food and logistical support in the days leading up to the April 22 attack.
'Parvaiz and Bashir had knowingly harboured the three armed terrorists at a seasonal dhok (hut) at Hill Park before the attack. The two men had provided food, shelter and logistical support to the terrorists who selectively killed the tourists on the basis of their religious identity,' the anti-terror agency said in a statement and added the two have been charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act's (UAPA) Section 19 (punishment for harbouring or concealing a terrorist). The agency did not disclose further information about the two men.

Since the terror strike, security forces have killed six terrorists in separate encounters across Kashmir, but the Pahalgam attackers remain at large. Authorities detained close to 2,000 people for questioning in the aftermath of the attack.
'The duo has also disclosed the identities of the three armed terrorists involved in the attack, and have also confirmed that they were Pakistani nationals affiliated to the proscribed terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT),' the anti-terror agency said in the statement.

Authorities earlier identified the suspected attackers as Hashim Musa, also known as Suleiman, and Ali Bhai, also called Talha Bhai — both Pakistani nationals — and local operative Adil Hussain Thokker. The agency did not clarify on Sunday if the three terrorists alluded to in its statement were same as the ones identified earlier.
NIA, which is formally investigating the case, has questioned hundreds of people over two months, including suspected collaborators, pony operators, vendors and tourism workers. Investigators have also examined videos and photographs taken by families at Baisaran meadow on the day of the attack. HT reported on Sunday that security forces are pursuing two theories about the whereabouts of the terrorists, with officials divided over whether the attackers remain in hiding or have fled to Pakistan.
The Resistance Front, a proxy group for the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba organisation, claimed responsibility for the attack. Indian agencies say the group is a front used by Pakistan to avoid international sanctions.
As first reported by HT on April 24, intelligence agencies traced the attack's digital communications to safe houses in Muzaffarabad and Karachi, establishing Pakistani involvement in what officials described as similar to the control room-operated 2008 Mumbai attacks.
India responded with Operation Sindoor on May 7, bombing nine terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in pre-dawn strikes that killed at least 100 militants. The operation sparked four days of cross-border fighting involving fighter jets, missiles and artillery.

NIA begins probe into case related to arrest of Afghan national
Bhubaneswar: Following the recent arrest of an Afghan national in Bhubaneswar for illegally overstaying in Odisha, officials of multiple central agencies including the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Intelligence Bureau launched a probe into the matter on Monday. A two-member team from the NIA on Monday visited the Airport Police station here and collected details regarding the case related to the arrest of an Afghan national from Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA), Bhubaneswar on Friday. Meanwhile, sources also claimed that another team of Intelligence Bureau on Monday visited Peyton Sahi in Buxi Bazar area of Cuttack city where the accused Afghan national, Mohammad Yousaf alias Yaha Khan has been staying illegally for the last more than six years. The IB team visited the rental accommodation of Khan and questioned the landlord to ascertain more details in the case. The Commissionerate police are also reportedly planning to soon request the Court to bring Khan on remand for further investigation into the matter. As per reports, based on the written report of the complainant, Samapika Pattnaik, DSP, Immigration, BPI Airport, a case was registered and Khan was arrested on Friday. The accused on Friday arrived at the Bhubaneswar Airport from Dubai of UAE by Flight No. 6E-1488 and presented a forged Indian passport (No. U 1380251) in the name of Yaha Khan hailing from Cuttack. During immigration clearance, on suspicion, the complainant Pattnaik and staff conducted detailed verification and found that a Discreet Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued from Kolkata Airport against the accused Khan. Preliminary investigation revealed Yousaf had illegally entered India in 2017 on an Afghan passport to Kolkata. But, Yousuf was overstaying in India after the expiry of the visa period since January 2018. The Immigration authorities have been searching for Khan who was staying in Cuttack concealing his true identity. During questioning, the accused confessed to his real identity as Mohammad Yousaf of Kabul, Afghanistan and admitted to forging and using false identity documents to reside and conduct business in India. He fraudulently obtained Indian documents including Aadhaar, PAN card, voter ID, driving license, gas connection bills, and an Indian passport using forged details. Police recovered forged Aadhar Card, Voter ID, PAN Card, Driving License, and Passport, foreign currency and two gold earrings, etc. This apart, the Commissionerate police during house search of Khan also seized bank documents in the name of Yaha Khan and Rs 50,000 in cash, for which he could not provide satisfactory explanation.

FM Sitharaman directs CBDT to cut pendency in grievance redressal mechanisms
New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday directed the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to significantly reduce pendency in grievance redressal mechanisms such as CPGRAMS and e-Nivaran pertaining to the department. She also emphasised that prompt and time-bound disposal of taxpayer grievances is essential for ensuring responsive governance. Chairing the Conclave of Principal Chief Commissioners of Income-tax here, the minister was apprised about key performance indicators. Out of the total 160,229 grievances (CPGRAMS and E-nivaran) for FY 2025-26, 1,31,844 grievances were resolved (up to 17.06.2025), leading to 82.28 per cent disposal. Refunds issued for FY 2025-26 (as on June 19) saw 58.04 per cent annual growth, showing better taxpayer services Rs 23,376 crore refunds issued on account of Order Giving Effects and Rs 10,496 crore refunds issued on rectification in FY2025-26. Out of the pending 5.77 lakh appeals, over 2.25 lakh appeals are targeted for completion in FY 2025-26, addressing over Rs 10 lakh crore of disputed demand, the minister was informed during the meeting. Around 4,605 cases were withdrawn after the monetary limits were raised in 2024, and in around 3,120 cases, appeals were not filed as the monetary limits for filing appeals were increased. Sitharaman noted that CBDT has undertaken several significant reforms in recent years, particularly in faceless assessment, e-verification system, tax exemptions & changes in slab rates , and digital service delivery. She called for further consolidation of these reforms to deliver tangible benefits to taxpayers. The Finance Minister directed all Principal Chief Commissioners of Income Tax to prioritise and accelerate the disposal of disputed tax demands that are currently pending before the faceless appellate authorities. This is aimed at reducing litigation backlog and ensuring timely resolution, thereby enhancing taxpayer trust in the system. She instructed that all departmental appeals falling below the revised monetary thresholds as notified in recent policy changes be identified and withdrawn within a period of three months. As per the announcements in the Union Budget 2024-25, the monetary thresholds for filing tax dispute appeals by the department were enhanced as follows: For Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT): Increased from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 60 lakh; for High Courts: Increased from Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crore; and for Supreme Court: Increased from Rs 2 crore to Rs 5 crore. During the conclave, Sitharaman emphasised the need for the timely processing of tax refunds and the proactive resolution of taxpayer grievances.
