Land acquisition: Farmers plan protest on June 25

Mysuru: Badagalapura Nagendra, president of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene, on Wednesday announced that the 'Devanahalli Chalo' protest, scheduled for June 25, is to highlight the ongoing struggle against KIADB's land acquisition in Devanahalli taluk in Bengaluru Rural district.
Nagendra told the reporters that farmers from 13 villages in the taluk sustained their protest for 1,182 days, requesting the state govt to withdraw the notification for land acquisition. "When the previous govt (BJP) issued an initial notification under Section 28(1) of the KIADB Act, local farmers staged protests and a satyagraha. Then opposition leader and present chief minister Siddaramaiah, with his party members, promised to prevent forced land acquisition if elected.
However, after assuming power, they maintained BJP's notification and proceeded with the final steps," he alleged.
The administration allegedly violated the Land Acquisition Act-2013 through this forced acquisition, which farmers consider a breach of trust.
The 'Devanahalli Chalo' protest will see thousands of participants, including farmers, Dalits, labourers, women, students, activists, writers, and artists assembling at the tahsildar's office, opposing the state govt's reversal of its commitment, he said.

Regarding KIADB's land acquisition of other villages in Nanjangud taluk, approximately 700 farming families who cultivated their lands for 70-80 years, have not received fair compensation. "If their demands are not met, we will stage a protest outside the CM's residence," Nagendra warned.
He said agriculture department officials are yet to supply seeds and fertilisers, demanding immediate action against counterfeit agricultural supplies.
The farmer leader also condemned the state govt's decision to spend Rs 92 crore on the Cauvery Aarti programme, describing it as "purposeless".

AN FIR has been filed against BJP state president and Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar for allegedly making derogatory remarks comparing the Kolkata Police's law and order situation to sex workers in Sonagachi, a red-light area in the city. The FIR was registered at Burtolla police station following a complaint lodged by a sex worker at Sonagachi, a police officer said. The allegation stems from an incident on Friday when Majumdar was detained by the police in Bhabanipur. Majumdar, however, defended his words as targeting police performance, not individuals, and accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of stoking the controversy to 'divert attention' from her own allies' 'misconduct'. 'The women of Sonagachi also have respect. There are principles,' he said. Majumdar accused CM Banerjee of orchestrating the controversy to hinder him and to deflect attention from (TMC leader) 'Anubrata Mondal's wrongdoings.' In protest, Sonagachi sex workers and their children plan to demonstrate on Monday. In a statement, the women said, 'The sex workers of Sonagachi, along with their children, are scheduled to hold a protest gathering on Monday. Sonagachi is not a symbol of disorder. MDMK leader Vaiko condemns political parties for holding events in the name of gods

The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko said on Sunday it was wrong for political parties to hold conferences in the name of any god. Speaking to reporters after the party's general council meeting in Erode, he said, 'Using the name of any god for a party conference is inappropriate, irrespective of which deity it is.' Referring to the Lord Muruga devotees conference held in Madurai on Sunday, he alleged the BJP, RSS, and Hindutva forces were behind the event. 'This will not help consolidate the Hindu vote bank in Tamil Nadu,' he felt. At the general council meeting, which saw the participation of around 1,800 members from across Tamil Nadu, the party adopted 28 resolutions, including one that called for the MDMK to contest in a higher number of seats in the alliance [headed by DMK] in the 2026 Assembly elections to secure Election Commission 'recognition' as a political party. Another resolution emphasised the need to counter what it described as ongoing efforts by the Union government to undermine Tamil language and identity. The council also demanded the withdrawal of a circular that mandates the disbursal of cooperative loans based on CIBIL score. Mr. Vaiko said the MDMK joined the DMK alliance in 2017 to protect the ideals of the Dravidian movement, which he said were under threat from attempts to impose Hindi and to alienate religious minorities. 'We are part of the alliance not out of convenience, but to uphold ideological goals,' he said. The MDMK would work to ensure the alliance's victory in future elections. Responding to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's recent comment that a day would come when those speaking in English in India would be made to feel ashamed of it, Mr Vaiko said, 'He is an expert in making shameful comments.' New Delhi: The Asean co-chair for the review of India FTA has expressed displeasure over commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal's recent remarks, describing several countries in the region as a "B team of China". At a scheduled India-Asean meeting held in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, the Malaysian co-chair put out a strongly worded message in response to the Indian minister's comments, ET has learnt.
