🌎 The Club World Cup guide to...Porto

Our guide to all 32 clubs participating at the FIFA Club World Cup continues. You can check out the full list so far here. Today we're looking How did they qualify for the Club World Cup? 📸 Alex Livesey - 2004 Getty Images Advertisement Porto are a club with great European pedigree, having won the European Cup in 1987 and the Champions League in 2004. They qualified for the Club World Cup via the UEFA ranking pathway thanks to some strong Champions League showings between 2021 and 2024. History at the Club World Cup Porto have never played at the Club World Cup but did win the Intercontinental Cup in 1987 (beating Uruguayan side Peñarol 2-1 after extra-time in a one-off match) and in 2004 (beating Colombian outfit Once Caldas in a penalty shoot-out). How did they perform in the 2024/25 season? It's been a tough campaign for Porto with the Portuguese giants finishing third in their domestic campaign, failing to win any of the cups and getting knocked out of the Europa League and the first post-group stage hurdle. Who is the coach? 📸 Hector Vivas - 2025 Getty Images Advertisement Argentine coach Martín Anselmi has only been in charge of Porto since January 2025, having previously coached in Chile, Ecuador and Mexico respectively. He has a reputation as a progressive, detail-oriented manager focused on high-intensity, possession-based football. Who is their star player? 📸 Octavio Passos - 2024 Getty Images Spain international forward Samu Aghehowa will be one to watch at the Club World Cup. Since joining Porto from Atlético de Madrid in the summer of 2024, the 20-year-old has been in impressive form, scoring 25 goals in 42 games, earning himself a call-up to Spain's senior squad last November, having won a gold medal for La Roja at the 2024 summer Olympic Games. Expected performance at the Club World Cup The Dragões will fancy their chances of emerging from Group A, where they will face Al Ahly, Inter Miami and Palmeiras. A quarter-final berth would represent a solid achievement. 📸 FILIPE AMORIM - AFP or licensors

Maurizio Sarri Makes Request to Sign €30M Juventus Winger

Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri has reportedly requested the signing of Juventus winger Nico Gonzalez. Maurizio Sarri Wants Nico Gonzalez at Lazio The returning manager has been in constant talks with the club's Sporting Director, Angelo Fabiani, over the past few days, as the two men work on putting together a transfer strategy. Therefore, several names have been placed on the table, and according to Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Nico Gonzalez was the latest suggestion brought up by Sarri. The Background The Argentinian winger has been a Serie A staple since making the move from Stuttgart to Fiorentina in the summer of 2021. After cementing himself as the Viola's ultimate attraction, the 27-year-old sealed a transfer to Juventus last summer on loan with an obligation to buy for circa €33 million. (Photo by) Advertisement Nico Gonzalez endured a challenging first campaign in Turin, only contributing five goals and four assists in 35 appearances in all competitions. Therefore, several reports believe the Bianconeri would be willing to offload the winger this summer, but a €30 million fee would be required to avoid disrupting the balance sheet. Difficult Mission for Lazio As the source explains, prising the Argentina international away from Juventus remains a daunting task for Lazio, especially at this stage of the summer, as their transfer plans remain impeded by the infamous liquidity index. One solution would be to conduct an initial loan deal, thus deferring the cost of the operation until next summer, but it remains to be seen whether this would be feasible.

McTominay is more than happy at Napoli and is not considering joining any other club this summer. The Partenopei boss, Antonio Conte, recently spoke about the midfielder's move to the Stadio Maradona last summer, admitting that he did not expect him to complete a transfer from Manchester United. (Photo by) 'Scott is a player whom I knew really well. He was born and raised at Manchester United,' Conte said. Advertisement 'I could see that he always made an impact when he played, but at the same time, I noticed he wasn't used as a key player at Manchester United. He was hardly a starter. Honestly, we had talked about it with [Napoli director] Giovanni Manna. He told me it was a possible solution. 'Sometimes, directors make up stories also to keep you calm,' Conte continued. 'If you ask me: 'Have you ever thought McTominay would surely arrive?' I'd say no. Don't forget we were heading into a season without European trophies to play for, so he had to leave Manchester United to start over with us.' McTominay scored 12 goals and provided six assists in 34 Serie A games in his debut season in Italy's top flight.
