EastEnders Samantha Womack reveals emotional transformation following breast cancer battle
Former EastEnders actress Samantha Womack, who played the iconic Ronnie Mitchell from 2007 to 2017, has revealed her incredible life transformation after her battle with breast cancer Former EastEnders actress Samantha Womack couldn't sound any happier, speaking from her home nestled in the mountains of Valencia, Spain, with only her rescue dog for company. At 52, she endured intensive treatment for breast cancer following her diagnosis in August 2022, but now feels the experience has positively transformed her perspective on life. "I feel so much more enlightened," says the Brighton-born actress, as she continues, "I know myself better, I feel humbler, I feel calmer." The most noticeable difference in Samantha's day to day life is her reduced workload - a significant change for someone who's been working almost non-stop since her breakthrough representing the UK in the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest, followed by launching her acting career in Pie In The Sky and Game On in the mid-1900s. For Samantha, saying no doesn't come easily, the Mirror reports. "After my year and a half of treatment, I started turning down a lot of stuff – and I didn't have the bank balance to match that confidence, trust me," Samantha revealed. The star shared the news that she was cancer free in December 2022. "It was me saying the word 'no' and my bank account creaking. But there was empowerment in that because I thought, 'OK, I need to go through this, spend time with myself and figure out stuff that I've never figured out – maybe stuff I've buried under a rug'." Another belief Samantha holds strongly since her experience with cancer is women's health - especially breast health - must be given greater priority. She revealed her own diagnosis came after she followed a gut instinct and booked a private check-up. She recalled, telling the Mirror: "I felt perfectly fine. There was no discolouration of skin, dimpling, irritation. I knew the NHS calls people in at 50, but I just had this thought of, 'I need to go and get checked before then'. I was just on the cusp of catching it too late and the speed with which I had to process information was unbearable. I sometimes think, 'What if I hadn't gone to that appointment'?" Samantha learned that she had a fast-spreading, Grade 3 invasive duct carcinoma and she could not wait any longer for treatment - a lumpectomy and lymph node removal, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. As the stepdaughter of a GP, Samantha immersed herself in learning about breast health. One of the most startling revelations she came across was how many women receive inaccurate mammogram results because of their breast density level. The denser the breast, meaning there is more fibroglandular tissue, the higher the risk of cancer and also its more difficult for mammograms to identify tumours. The star came to the firm conclusion that women should never let their health fall to the bottom of their 'to-do' list. 'We all live in busy worlds and tend to put these little niggles to one side,' she says. 'I'm an avid lover of the NHS, but if something is worrying you and you have the money to go and get yourself checked, why would you not? I did and it changed my life. Now, I want to empower women to take control of their bodies," she added. Samantha acknowledges her privilege but admits her financial situation now is very different from her days playing Ronnie Mitchell in EastEnders, between 2007 and 2017. She said: "Soaps pay very, very well, but the reality of being self-employed means that, yes, you get paid for the jobs you do, but for the six months of the year you don't work, you don't get paid." "I've never been a wealthy person. I've gone from job to job, always thinking, 'Better say yes because no one's going to want me if I don't'. "I had very low self-esteem. Going back to work after my treatment felt very hard. I couldn't quite step back into that neurotic, zany energy as easily. I was physically capable, but I wasn't emotionally capable. I was picking things that felt gentle to me," she continued. One of those 'gentle' jobs was a guest role in the crime series The Marlow Murder Club, which she says "felt like a safe space" with a "lovely bunch of women". "Now it's about things I feel I can emotionally connect to, without having to lose myself too much," she continued. "I'm not ready to go into a gold lamé dress and boogie about on stage." Another significant shift for Samantha is the amount of time she now spends on her own, as her partner, actor Oliver Farnworth, divides his time between Spain and the UK where he plays John Sugden in Emmerdale. The set-up works well, she explains: 'He comes back for two or three days at a time, but is filming a lot at the moment. That's been quite good for me, having some space on my own. It's been rare in my life that I've been confident enough to do that, so it's been helpful.' Late last year, the actress hinted that she and Oliver were considering becoming parents together, saying: "We've talked about adopting, because after the cancer treatment I wouldn't be able to conceive naturally and because of my age." "But I think I'm learning to put things in perspective and hopefully, in the next 10 years, one of my kids will produce a sproglet and I can go from maternal to gra-ternal," she shared.

The Finn lost his F1 seat with Sauber at the end of the 2025 season and now operates as the Mercedes team reserve driver. 7 Valtteri Bottas has convinced fans he will land a new job in F1 after some cryptic social media posts Credit: X 7 Bottas was seen wearing a cowboy hat before spotting a topical car brand Credit: X 7 His cameraman pointed to the Cadillac symbol at the front of the car Credit: X 7 Bottas remarked it was a 'nice seat' as he touched the driver's seat Credit: X 7 The Finn then commented how there were two seats free Credit: X 7 Bottas was then asked if he wanted to drive it, to which he said, 'Not yet' Credit: X However, Lewis Hamilton's old team-mate has been linked with reclaiming a spot on the grid when the paddock expands to accommodate Cadillac as the 11th F1 team for 2026. And to that end, Bottas has left fans thinking an announcement over his future is imminent after he appeared to tease a partnership with the US luxury car manufacturer. Taking to social media, Bottas first shared a pair of snaps of himself at a pool table wearing a cowboy-style hat at Silver City Aspen in Colorado. But it was his second post which really got fans talking. READ MORE IN F1 HORROR SMASH Racing driver rushed to hospital after car flips in terrifying crash While out on a stroll, Bottas' cameraman, Paul Ripke, pointed out a car ahead of them, before highlighting it was a Cadillac. Having opened the door of the car, Ripke remarks: "That's a nice seat." The 35-year-old then goes and touches the seat, saying: "Oh wow, that's actually a nice seat." After a moment of looking inside the car, Ripke notes: "And there's two seats." BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK Bottas looks and then looks at Ripke, saying: "And they're both free." He is then asked if he wants to sit in it, to which he replies: "Not yet." Bottas is one of the favourites to land one of the two new seats which will be up for grabs at the team next season, and would represent a wealth of experience with 246 race starts to his name, including 10 wins and 19 poles. And taking to the comments of Bottas' post, fans now believe an announcement could be coming soon, with one saying: "A code?" A second said: "Are you saying what I think you're saying, without saying it?" A third added: "That means what I think that means?" Another said: "Please lord, I don't ask for much!" A fifth said: "Yeah he's back for 26 isn't he lol." Bottas is, of course, known to be very cheeky with his social media activity, so the tease should be taken with a pinch of salt for the time being. Besides, he is facing stiff competition from the likes of Sergio Perez, who was axed by Red Bull in 2024. Motorsport icon and ex-F1 world champion Mario Andretti - one of the directors of the new team - has already confirmed the team were looking at the Mexican driver to take one of the seats. Speaking to Fox Sports in May, he said: "All I can tell you is that he's [Perez] certainly one of the drivers that's being considered. He has to be. "I cannot divulge as to where we are with any commitment whatsoever — I think we want to keep that luxury to ourselves until we feel that we have scanned the entire spectrum of availability. I think that's a prudent thing to do." Other drivers who have been linked include Mick Schumacher, Zhou Guanyu, Alex Palou, and Colton Herta. The next F1 race will commence in Austria next weekend off the back of a double Mercedes podium in Canada, which saw George Russell take the win ahead of Max Verstappen and rookie team-mate Kimi Antonelli.

Popular Emmerdale star Fred Kettle addresses long-awaited return - and it's soon
Emmerdale's Fred Kettle has opened up about his return to the show. Fred's first scenes as Dylan Penders aired earlier this year, when we learnt what April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) had been through while living rough in Leeds. A flashback episode of the ITV soap revealed April had befriended Dylan and a woman called Becca while on the streets, two people who looked out for her a lot. Troubled teen Dylan was battling a drug addiction, which was central to the storyline he was a part of when he made his way to the village. At the time, April's relationships with the likes of Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) and Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) were fractured due to the fact neither of them could understand what she had been through. When Dylan arrived in Emmerdale looking for April, she became determined to help him, with the two youngsters sharing the connection of life on the streets. Dylan caused a great deal of trouble at Smithy Cottage, but it was largely down to the fact Marlon didn't really want him around. He only allowed him to stay because he thought it would help rebuild his relationship with April, but he then took drastic action in an attempt to get rid of him. Marlon planted some drugs from the vet cabinet in Dylan's coat pocket, making it look as though he had lied to April about getting clean. The character was sent away, but he then attempted to overdose and was rushed into hospital. Marlon and Dylan made an agreement there that he would pay for Dylan's rehab and in return, he would not contact April. Since then, April has made a great deal of progress when it comes to readjusting to normality again. Dylan's return is bound to challenge her, as she is served another reminder of the chapter in her life she'd really rather forget. Speaking to the Mirror, star Fred Kettle said that he is thrilled to be back in the role of Dylan. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street?
