Reality show winner and pop star ‘unveiled' as mysterious masked performer President ahead of Download Festival slot
THE identity of a mysterious mask-wearing performer who leads new band President has been revealed ahead of its Download Festival performance tomorrow afternoon. The hard-rocking act launched its presidential campaign out of the blue earlier this year with a series of cryptic social media posts. 4 President is playing a 30 minute set at Download tomorrow afternoon Credit: Instagram More recently the band announced its first rally (headline gig) is taking place on July 30 at The Garage, London. It quickly sold out. Two crushing singles, In The Name of the Father and Fearless, are aural manifestos, acting as a rallying cry for rock and metal lovers to pledge allegiance. Speculation over President's identity has been rife ever since the first images of its frontman wearing a creepy rubber mask went public. A place on the Download Festival bill before a physical release indicated the band's members had some gravitas in the industry. READ MORE ON CHARLIE SIMPSON The consensus is that the singer Busted frontman Charlie Simpson. President's songs bear a striking resemblance to Charlie's trademark gravelly vocals, particularly from his time leading Fightstar in the early noughties. That band reunited last year for a sellout gig at Wembley Arena to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Most read in Music Not only that, but fans have spotted a gap in the front teeth of the singer, which Charlie is known to have. Beyond the vocal and facial similarities, though, is the fact that the trademark for President's music on Spotify belongs to King of Terror. The Masked Singer crowns Charlie Simpson winner as Rhino revealed The sole director for that firm on Companies House is one Charles Robert Simpson, while documents show his wife Anna holds 50 percent share stake in the busines s. Though the mystery may be solved, the concept is still creative and refreshing. Faceless acts aren't particularly unusual in modern rock - Ghost have been doing it ghoulishly well for years and Download headliners Sleep Token are currently the genre's biggest poster boys - but President's committal to its theme remains intriguing. And mystery still surrounds the remaining members of the group with former Bring Me The Horizon star Jordan Fish and members of Sleep Token and Bullet For My Valentine tipped to be involved. If you're at Download this weekend check them out on the Dogtooth Stage at 4.25pm tomorrow. 4 It appears Charlie Simpson is the man behind the President mask Credit: Getty 4 Charlies is best known for his work in Busted with James Bourne and Matt Willis Credit: Getty 4 Was President inspired by his time on The Masked Singer? No Marti, No Party: Clydebank's finest Marti Pellow still stealing the show aged 60
Marti Pellow may have just celebrated his 60th birthday – but he's showing no signs of taking things easy. In fact, he's busier than ever and is incredibly happy to be back on the road again, getting ready to bring his Love is All Around Tour to Edinburgh Castle on July 5. 'I played the castle a few times over my life with my old band, Wet Wet Wet, and I always had a fantastic time. Now to come back here again and get the pleasure of doing it – it's always special to be able to sing amongst my own. It's always a pleasure.' I've had the pleasure of interviewing Marti quite a few times over the years and what I can say is he is one of the friendliest and most down-to-earth artists I have met. He always asks about how you're doing, your family and has time for everyone on set. You can't help be charmed by Clydebank's finest – and testament to that is the thousands of fans who pack out each and every one of his shows. The personality is a draw but the music is still so loved, with Goodnight Girl, Sweet Little Mystery and, of course, Love is All Around, creating anthemic singalongs each and every time. 'I love that sense of connection when the audience do the singing too. I'm packing my wee suitcase with all those lovely songs that people remember me for, and that's exactly what we love about the set. 'So make sure you bring your dancing shoes because I'm going to be ripping it up here,' he told me from a stunning balcony overlooking Edinburgh Castle. Marti's highs and lows of his career and personal life are well documented but it seems that he is in the best place now, ready to embrace every opportunity that comes his way – which is why he finally agree to take part in the Masked Singer. 'When I met the people who work there, I was very dubious, but they were tenacious and I was so taken by how passionate they were about the programme and how much I could get involved in the design of the wolf, I had to go for it. 'You have to invest in the character and go on a wee journey with them. I don't know if the wolf will appear again though.' Laughing, he added: 'I thought I was doing quite good and then I looked online at what people were saying and it was 'It's Marti!' 'It's unmistakably Marti.' I think that was my auntie Gladys saying that!' There's a childlike joy in Marti's eyes when you speak to him and he admitted that even though he's just celebrated his big birthday, he still feels incredibly young at heart. In between gigs, he's recording new music at a studio in France and gearing up for a run of shows later in the year, including at Glasgow's Hydro on November 1. 'No Marti, no party' is the chant which echoes around every venue you see Marti in and thankfully, it seems that party is set to continue for many years to come. I feel so grateful right now.' Advertisement 'One of my best friends from high school was the first person to call me, and he said, 'Babe. I can't believe it. This is what we dreamed of,'' Scherzinger added. 'I can't wait to speak to my mom.' Although the award-winning singer became a superstar as a member of The Pussycat Dolls from 2003 to 2010, she always dreamed of starring on Broadway. 7 'I'm overjoyed with gratitude,' Scherzinger said after she was nominated for her first Tony Award in May. I couldn't have asked for a better dream role.' Elsewhere in the interview, Scherzinger thanked 'Sunset Boulevard' and her role as Norma for allowing her to 'share her whole heart with the world.' 7 'Sunset Boulevard,' which received a total of seven nominations, led the Tony Award nominees among musical revivals this year.
